GamePro Expo succeeds E3

IDG, publisher of GamePro magazine, will launch a consumer video game conference next October at the Los Angeles Convention Center to succeed the now defunct E3. "IDG has been secured to run the new GamePro Expo show, what we knew as E3," read an official memo sent to LA Convention center members yesterday. The event is being planned for 30,000 attendees, half the scale of the former E3. In addition to being a publisher, IDG puts on several expos including Macworld so the company has some event chops.
Does this mean fatty E3 is back? Though too early to tell, the announcement is a step in the right direction. But one thing's for sure; LA will get bombarded with a plethora of gaming nerds like us come next fall. And not just nerds with industry badges...

"secured to run the new GamePro Expo show"
..An exposition is a show.
To me this is bad news, I'd prefer for these shows to stay small. It's better for them

Wasn't E3 dissolved by the Developers, the very people whose full support would be required to make this new expo a success? They might throw a party, but how can we be sure anyone of importance will show up?

woot! more fun for my press-pass friend and his "photographer."

This is good. The new E3 can due what is is suposed to do , provide an outlit for actual journalists to get some scoop info on a lot of games without a huge specticle.
This is for the hard core fans who crave a dog and pony show like E3 of old. Doesn't serve any real purpose other then get us really excited about games.

Anything that GamePro is attached to cannot be good.
Oobgarm @ Nov 2nd 2006 1:01PM
It's not by the magazine folks, so no need to worry there.
Oobgarm @ Nov 2nd 2006 1:04PM
Rather, it's not strictly by GamePro...but their parent company . So that's good, seeing that they have experience with large scale events. I don't think I could stomach a show put on by a bunch of people using silly eighth-grade sounding aliases.

@ Oobgarm
Don't forget the eigth-grade design of the magazine with cartoon drawings and 52 diferent fonts and colours per page.
Ohhh how I hate that magazine!!

I think this will be just as successful as IGN Live that was held in the Anaheim Convention Center.

@4
did you read the last 2 sentences?
"But one thing's for sure; LA will get bombarded with a plethora of gaming nerds like us come next fall. And not just nerds with industry badges..."
Eluding to it not being industry exclusive, which means it probably will turn into a big spectical for all the non-industry people

So...if Gamepro is handling this show, does this mean that it'll be all about how great Sony is?
Seriously, Gamepro is more biased that Fox News.

This is going to be interesting... I still wanna go! :-)

All this talk about an event like E3. Don't expect it it to be anything like the old E3. I can't see publishers spending big bucks for a consumer show. I'm willing to predict it's winds up being nothing more then a big gaming flea market with publishers pushing all their old titles. What's even more surprising is that IDG, the parent company, may not even use the GamePro name. The final name has not been decided but perhaps even IDG concedes that GamePro has a brand image. Overall I have very low expectations for this event.
