Miss Video Game competition [update 1]
missvideogame.com/index.phpmissvideogame.com/index.phpmissvideogame.com/index.php
The four day Miss Video Game competition will be held from June 10 -14 2007 in Montreal, Canada. Yeah, another Canadian gaming event! Why are we telling you about it this early? Registration is due by midnight December 31, 2006. Event organizers say 50 women have already agreed to step into the virtual ring. Allegedly Becky Young of Video Games Live and Faith Naked of The Girl Gamer are ready to lock and load.
The competition will test the players across various game genres. This isn't some wimpy one genre FPS fest, no sir, these ladies have to be good at it all: FPS, RTS, strategy and anything else the organizers come up with -- along with having gamer spirit and attitude.
Invariably a fair amount of you are saying, "But I'm a guy, what do I care?" This is where the sick/fun part comes in. Between Dec. 31 and Jan. 20 the rest of us are allowed to vote on the ladies we want to see in the competition based on personality, creativity and gamer representation. The competitors will be allowed to upload videos, interviews and audio clips during this time to sway our vote.
The pre-competition will determine four finalists and one additional finalist will be picked by the celebrity judges. No word yet on who the judges will be. The finalists will be flown to Montreal next June and battle for three days. The competition will be broadcast across the interwebs. The winner receives $1000 USD, a trip to Mexico and a gaming system. No word yet on whether Miss Video Game gets a tiara.
[Thanks, Faith]

I don't know why you people are hating, this is just like a competition for men, except it's for women.

Only attention whores will participate since we all know Girl Gamers don't exist.
Silver R. Wolfe @ Nov 2nd 2006 9:27PM
Yes, this is another competition that shouldn't exist. Why? Because girls can easily participate in other tournaments and still win, not like they're at a disadvantage.
Yay for double standards eh? You can't keep me out of your competitions because I'm a girl, but I can keep you out of ours because you're a guy.
I hope a drag queen wins. Or a transexual.

My college had a Halloween costume contest. First place won $1000, no strings attached.
This is a lot more work for the same amount of money!

im not bagging the idea but unless they get true genuine girl gamers that mean business an dont eventually get naked on those video uploads to score more votes, then no one would take this seriously
Becky "aktrez" Young @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:13AM
Thanks for mentioning Faith and I in the article. It was Faith who found it and pointed me to it.
I have been competing and also running pageants for a VERY long time now. Competing since I was 4. Strangely enough, that is also when I started gaming. I also act, sing, dance, run a gaming website, work as Events Director on Video Games Live, host a radio show on Gamemusicradio.com, consult on video game titles about to be released by Acclaim and guest host on Maxim's Covino and Rich show on Sirrius radio.
Pageants is just another form of gaming! It's all about competing. Men do it too.. it's called the BAR scene. Who can get the girls number before who...
Anyhow, I'm in it for the fun (like always) and I've got some fun and creative ideas up my sleeve to help me along.
I don't consider myself unattractive, however, I do want to prove that one can win not JUST based on looks but creativity, personality and good 'ol team spirit!
I hope I get your vote. It's just another game to me. :)

This is retarded. I can't put into words the feelings I have for beauty pageants (and let's face it this is really a beauty pageant with gaming thrown in) It makes me angry.
I'm a girl and I would never enter one of these (and not just because I'd lose due to not knowing how to play FPS :p) On principle.
Grr.
Becky \\\ @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:26AM
Hey nzdsgirl, I don't play FPS games either! Not my bag. That being said, I think a lot of us who are gamers will be a lot more unique than your typical "World Peace" beauty pageant contestant that the media portrays.
Also, note that IS just how the media portrays most pageants. Not all pageants are based soley on looks and not all of them are tutu's and frufru shee shee BS. There are a lot of pageants out there that are based on a judging system like this: 40% Interview, 30% talent, 20% community service/grades, 10% appearance.
I use to run pageants in Star Wars Galaxies and Anarchy Online. Of COURSE everyone looks the same so we never judged on appearance... pixels aren't that sexy. That being said, you should have SEEN how creative some of these people got. It was awesome to see what kind of talents they put together.. etc.
I think something like Miss Video Game will be fun and just another game to MOST girls. The girls who are "world peace", fake boob, showing too much skin will be weeded out quickly by those who are truly gamers.
I hope that this shed a little light on things like this and I hope that you will follow the competition and at least know that it's just for fun! :) That's how I am viewing it.
Shiro @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:28AM
There's a lot of hating going on over this idea... And strangely, I don't see why.
If I see a girl walk onto the stage and confidently say how much she loves sniping on Battlefield 2's Operation Cleansweep map, I think I'd probably die. Or fall in love. Or both. In that order.
I know, I know, there is a *HIGH* potential that their boyfriends will be coaching them and making them memorize lines about memorable game moments or whatever, but when it comes to an actual gaming contest, who can say no to 8 chicks playing "Command and Conquer: Generals"? Mostly, I'd like to actually see how the game went, like a sort of in-game camera broadcasting the action.
And when it comes down to it, I can't say I don't support at least an effort to bring girl gamers into the spotlight with a sort of pageant type feel. (I really don't know anything about pageants, but if women can get into it, I'm not one to argue).
FSK405K @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:29AM
Do we get to vote after the swimsuit competition? There is one of those, right? Otherwise, why would I watch this?
Judd @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:49AM
Becky, I clicked on your link and you clearly are an attractive woman. I'm not suggesting that somebody who is attractive isn't good at video games, I just don't feel like the reason you're in this is because of your skill. I don't want that to come off as rude, but clearly you are not on the Maxim channel for your videogame knowledge. I know a few girl gamers who are actually pretty good at certain games(my sister will kick anyway's ass in SSX Tricky), but sadly many of them will not stand a chance of winning a competition like this, because they might not be as aesthetically pleasing in videos as others.
Ok let's hypothetically say that the competition has nothing to do with looks. Well, you're still competing only against girls. Maybe I don't understand because I'm a white male, but if I was black I wouldn't want to get a job because of affirmative action. I would want to get a job because I earned it. In the same sense, if I was a girl I'd think that I'd prove my skill as a gamer a lot more winning a tournament against everybody, instead of just specifically girls. For a group to be taken seriously they should not stay amongst each other, but conquer the other groups. This shows that the group can compete with the best of them, and doesn't need to be spoon fed any advantages. Otherwise seperating yourselves only increases the stereotypes.
Faith @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:30AM
I'd just like to point out how the contest will run. The first round of voting is based on personality, gamer representation and attitude. After that its all hardcore gaming, which means no fake gamers will make it to Montreal for another round of gaming.
Also this contest will be based on what the voters do. If you don't want this to be all about the boobs, then make sure you vote and make sure you vote for who you think is the best girl to represent the gamer community. Besides all the girl voters won't be voting on boob size and I plan to get the word out to the girl gamer community when the voting starts to vote for their favorite gamer.
Mole @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:45AM
I have no problem with beauty pageants. It's when they disguise themselves as a means of promoting "awareness of girls in gaming for the gaming industry" and creating "positive role models for future female gamers" and put forward some pretense of "gamer representation" being any sort of reasonable criterion that it just becomes pointless and embarrassing.

Brinstar @ Nov 3rd 2006 9:26AM
According to the competition's corporate mission statement, you don't even have to play videogames or know anything about them to enter:
Ladies - join up now, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. This could be the start of a great career in gaming or promotions. Even if you don't know anything about video games sign up and learn - that's what this is all about, spreading gaming to women around the globe!!!
You just have to have a desire to be in the "promotion" industry and want to "learn" about videogames.

The prizes are lame: $1000 USD would only cover the trip to Montreal and staying for the four days that make up the "final" competition (and having to take vacation days from work). Another prize "a console" - what console are they going to give away that gamers won't already have?
Pageants and preparation take a lot of time, just to get the chance to spend your own damn money to go on a trip. Besides, I won't have time away from my Wii, DS, and GH2 to make "promotional videos".

"I don't want that to come off as rude, but clearly you are not on the Maxim channel for your videogame knowledge."
Actually, I am on Maxim for my videogame knowledge. The reason that I'm on Maxim is to talk about and review video games. It's also great because I talk about how to get your girlfriend into gaming. I am called the "Video Game Nussie". Yeah, of COURSE they call out that I'm a good looking gamer. It's MAXIM and that is their angle. Then I open my mouth and talk about my gaming career and games that I'm currently playing and my looks are no longer the main focus!
Yes, girls get into gaming because of their boyfriends. There is nothing wrong with that! If a girl who has never picked up a game starts playing Halo because their boyfriend plays, then that just made another girl gamer! It's unfair to diss them because they didn't pick up a joystick at age 3 and start playing on their own. At least they are playing... right?
I HAVE been playing since age 4. I'm not the BEST gamer on earth. Hell, I don't even play competitively. I'm not a fan of FPS games and I almost never play sports games. That being said, I game EVERY day! I recently beat Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 at 100%, I have a level 36 undead Mage on W.O.W., I own every console and play games on every console.
That being said, I also have 2 full time jobs and 3 part time jobs (all surrounding the gaming world) that take up a GREAT deal of my time. I have friends, a boyfriend (also in the industry) and a life. I'm not the typical "Go home and frag until 5am to get the highest score" kind of gamer. I think that the girl who wins a competition like this is someone who is creative, enthusiastic, ambitious and who loves gaming. Not necessarily the one who pwns ONLY at one or two hardcore competitive titles.
I'm not some blonde ditz who is out for world peace. Yes, I am on Maxim radio. Yes, I am an actress. Yes, I am a model and yes, I have done pageants since I was 4. That doesn't make me ANY less of a gamer. In fact, I am more of a "gamer" than many of the girls out there getting the spotlight for "gaming" right now.
So, don't let looks or hobbies confuse you. I have quite a resume in the gaming world and just because it's not on the competitive field, doesn't make it any less relevant.

Will @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:35PM
I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with this or make assumptions about the credibility of any of the participants without knowing them. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to do that in my opinion. I think it's best to learn a little more about who or what is involved as opposed to posting a knee jerk reaction.
There are a lot of ways to celebrate the girl gaming scene. This is just one of them. I'm married to an avid gamer and I've learned that there are a lot of stereotypes about female gamers. Maybe a competition like this can help dispel some of the girl gamer myths that are out there right now in the gaming community.
The Shaman @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:43PM
I think the problem here is the fact that the "Contest" is misnamed... It has nothing to do with video games at all accept for the title. It even says that you don't have to know anything about video games... They aren't looking for or judging on anything video game related... They're just looking for a hot chick.
That being said, whoever wrote "I don't want that to come off as rude, but clearly you are not on the Maxim channel for your videogame knowledge."
is clearly an idiot who has no idea who Becky is. You might want to actually do some research before cramming your foot in your mouth... Becky has been a spokes person for girl gaming for quite a while and has dedicated a significant portion of her life towards promoting gaming.
In fact, I'm willing to bet that her knowledge of both games and the industry surpasses yours quite easily. What have you done for the industry lately?
Faith @ Nov 3rd 2006 2:45PM
Would everyone stop saying this is not about gaming, because the fact that there is two online gaming competitions that the contests must compete to move forward in the judging makes this all about gaming.
Allen @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:58PM
Faith, that's like saying the Miss America Beauty Pageant is really about who's the most beautiful. In further news, the US Presidental Election isn't about who's the right man for the job.
neeecole @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:58PM
They're most likely saying that you don't have to be a gamers to get some variety in contestants. Maybe someone will enter not having ever picked up a controller and beat all our asses.
By the way, my name is Nicole, many of you know me as neeecole, and I entered the pageant this afternoon. XD
Eih'Beir @ Nov 3rd 2006 5:43PM
Oh, a popularity contest.
Groundbreaking...for Canada, I guess.
Becky "Aktrez" Young @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:15PM
Actually.. Miss America is a scholarship competition.. not a beauty pageant. Miss USA is a beauty pageant and has NOTHING to do with how smart you are.
darkgunner @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:43PM
What should looks have to do with being a gamer? If this weren't a pagent but purely a competition for girls who game and are skilled, than by all means bring it on! I don't think this does anything for the girl gamer reputation and is simply some sort of marketing ploy to get girls in bikinis playing games...meh.
Becky \\\ @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:50PM
But that's the thing.. it's not about the picture.. it's about the videos.. audio.. game scores.. and anything else you can possibly upload to help your cause. It's about getting creative. Of COURSE Your picture is going to go up!! We are girls.. we like to post our pictures... If it were guys they would do the same thing just to know who you are voting for. It's not a beauty contest unless the people VOTING make it one. So, instead of voting on JUST the hottest girl with the biggest boobs who says "I don't mind when my boyfriend games", vote for the girl who is most creative, most fun, most original and would be the best rep.
Trina @ Nov 4th 2006 5:01PM
While I don't agree with the competition, I think it's unfair to attack Becky. She has done alot of work for the gaming industry and girl gaming. I remember seeing her launch Watch us Game Girls and now Girl Gaming Network. While I have not met her, she always seems very knowledgeable about games and I would not question her dedication to the gaming industry.
Just my two cents.
Trina ^_^
jezebelseven @ Nov 4th 2006 5:17PM
21, 23, agree.
@Becky's "We are girls.. we like to post our pictures... If it were guys they would do the same thing just to know who you are voting for. It's not a beauty contest unless the people VOTING make it one."
Talk about renforcing a obnoxious stereotype. I'm a girl gamer and I don't go around posting my pictures everywhere expecting to be told I'm special. I don't like to post my pictures-- hell, every time I have it's been a negative reaction, because appearently it's not good enough to be a chick and play games, you also have to be a HOT chick and play games-- You, being a maxim chick, I imagine have never had that reaction, so maybe that's why you can't see it from the other side. I'm not saying you don't know anything about games-- clearly you do.
I've also never seen guys doing the same thing-- I'd know who I was voting for by their name, or who they are, not what they look like.
The gaming world seems to be the new place overwhelmed with sexism. I know we need to stick together and find a way to be accepted, but this just distances me from the gamer world, and I imagine a lot of others feel this way. Guys can't enter (And if they were gonna have a competition, it'd be a LAN party, not a pageant.). This is two steps back from making gaming an equal world, imho.
You know damn well the majority of guys are going to vote to make it a beauty contest, and you're being intentionally naive if you think otherwise. Chalk my vote up for another girl gamer saying this is a horrible idea. I really hope I'm wrong, but I know I for one will never enter any 'gaming contest' that requires my picture as part of the entrance kit. Every other 'gamer girl' competition I've seen that required pictures had girls sending in more and more half nude, suggestive poses, because every woman knows every straight man is gonna vote with the smaller of the two heads. This goes along with my annoyance with things like the frag dolls.
Simply put, I don't want to be objectified to fit in. I'd rather all girls were equal and worked our way in, rather than letting the hot girls get in, and the 'not so hots' have to sit on the outside.
Becky "AKTREZ" Young @ Nov 4th 2006 6:19PM
Here is the thing.. YOU may not post your picture online but I, and millions of girls do! It doesn't mean we are attention whores or wrong. It means we like to take pictures and we like to get feedback. We LIKE to look pretty and yea.. we LIKE the attention. Is that a bad thing? No.. it's human nature! If that's not you then fine. That doesn't mean what I am doing or what MILLIONS of girls are doing is wrong.
I am not posing in a bikini or licking a game controller. I am not "faking" and saying I am REALLY a gamer... I AM a gamer and yea.. I model too. That shouldn't matter at all! I'm what I like to refer to as a "glam gamer". Just means I like to do girly things and I also like to game!
Just because you play FPS games and I don't doesn't mean I'm wrong. Just because you like to play RTS games and I don't doesn't mean I"m wrong. A LOT of girls don't play games because they are under the impression that it's just about kicking ass and shooting things. That's not ALL games are about!
Just like in everything else in life there are LOTS of different types of girls... Just because we also like to play video games doesn't change that. Just because you don't like dressing up and looking pretty and wearing frills doesn't mean another girl is wrong for wanting to do that.
This doesn't appeal to ALL girl gamers. It's not TRYING to. It is appealing to girl gamers who like to do those sort of things. It's saying "Hey, we can be pretty and sexy and fun and play games too!!" and honestly, there is NOTHING wrong with that just like I don't have an issue with you NOT wanting to do it.
My issue is looking at girls who DO want to do it and somehow saying that we are wrong or bad.. or setting a BAD example. If a real gamer wins this, gets some publicity as being a real gamer and is also cute and frilly.. maybe some more cute and frilly girls will think that it's cool and get into gaming. WHO KNOWS!
All I know is that it's a BIG world and there are LOTS of women in it... women of ALL types. So, instead of saying THIS IS WRONG.. THIS IS BAD!!!! Let's say "Hey, this is cool.. another way for girls to be girls. And yea... we game too!"
Becky \\\ @ Nov 4th 2006 6:20PM
OH.. and Thank you Trina for your comments. I think I will be seeing you at the WIGI meet and greet on the 14th in L.A. :)
Becky "Aktrez" Young @ Nov 4th 2006 6:26PM
OH.. and FYI... I just read that line about me being a Maxim chick. Actually, my entire life I was the fat, ugly nerd gamer with mousy brown hair, a gap in my teeth and round face. I was never liked in school. I came home every day and either went to dance class, acting, voice lessons or played games.
I didn't want to be that fat little girl anymore so I worked (and still work EVERY DAY) to get myself to a place that I want to be. THAT is why I am able to do Maxim Radio (and it's RADIO mind you.. not the magazine) Because I cared enough to want to better myself.
In the end, what I do.. or what any other gamer girl does is really no matter of yours. If YOU don't want to do it.. that's fine. Saying that we should all play the same way and live the same way is saying we should all be cookie cutter molds of one another. How is THAT going to do anything to further our community!? It isn't about objectifying ANYTHING! I work in the industry.. I have for over 4 years. I have been gaming since I was 4 years old (and mind you, I'm only using me as an example cause it's all I really know well enough) and I've also been doing pageants as long.
Am I really to be seen as a bad influence or objectifying myself if I want to enter another pageant that happens to also have elements of my other passion - gaming?
jezebelseven @ Nov 7th 2006 6:55PM
@ "In the end, what I do.. or what any other gamer girl does is really no matter of yours."
I find it highly laughable you're joining a contest in which you will knowingly be judged (Whether its on looks, gaming skills, whatever), then tell me I have no right to judge what you're doing.
I have every right to make a judgement about it, especially when you're going into this to 'make a name' for gamers who happen to be of the female persuasion, or bring more of them in, and all that.
I don't find it acceptable to replace one stereotype with another. I also, as I've said, don't find it at all acceptable to do one thing and call it another. If you want to be in a pageant, be in it, but don't call it a gaming competition-- 23 hit the nail on the head.
Athena Twin PMS @ Nov 11th 2006 2:39PM
The message seems pure in highlighting women gamers since profile's featured were diversified and game play was a definite factor in winning...not a bad message at all! At least it is not for models that don’t know the difference between Mario from Sonic, it is actually a contest for gamer girls that involve PLAYING games, woo hoo!
However...
Who are the people behind Miss Videogames? I was about to send an email asking if they wanted a female judge, then I looked a little harder. Address on site looks like a home address? Has this event been done before? I don’t see ANY sponsors or companies supporting this. What happens if they don’t get any sponsors, will it still take place?
I think it is scary to post up pics and win a trip to see a potential gamer-girl stalker, you never know. What if this is the biggest gamer-girl hoax of the century? Or worse, what if some guy meets her at the airport with a big knife? Scary!!!
If they do turn out to have credentials and get a major partner or sponsor, then who knows? I will probably send that email to ask if they want a female judge! I will continue to follow this and hope for the best, but people need to be safe and realize that a 12 year old could have put up this site. Journalist need to be careful in reporting this stuff, and gamers need to be careful acting on it.

I posted this the other day, but it did not go through so I am posting it again...
I think the idea looks good on the site, the member profiles are diverse, the messaging is pure, and there is actual game play in the competiton. In fact, I was about to email them to be a judge...
But THEN I looked at the site a little harder...
