Today's hottest game video: ???? ?? ? ????

Anyone know what the game is? It looks like a bizarre Japanese infomercial fused with an Old Navy ad. It's looks for something called T.O.W. on the PSP, but other than that, our Japanese is about as good as our Orcish. An open challenge to Joystiq commenters: mash this up with some fun and exciting audio. We've been watching this with the audio off, and it's even more bizarre that way. So please, make it interesting for the rest of us. At least the character customization screens look pretty cool. Other than that, it's like watching a Japanese gameshow. What about that "K-Tel Record Presents: The Sounds of Anime" looking image at the end? This takes top prize as one of the weirdest top videos so far, but it is getting the top love spot on YouTube tonight.
Okay, tiny update: it looks like this is the Tales of the World RPG that was shown at the Tokyo Game Show. Still, that doesn't help much. Until we find out what's going on, it's Fable Lite.
Check it out after the jump. If you speak Japanese either fill us in, or make up something really, really good.

I've never played any of the Tales of the World games, but it seems as if you create your own character to go on a quest with other characters from previous Tales games. I don't know if this was present in the other TOW games.
I love the cross over aspect of the TOW games, which I why I wish it was released here.
Raine & Presea.

Well, I can't understand most of the hiragana, but I do know that the full name is "Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology."
Also, I've heard elsewhere that it's supposed to include characters from previous Tales games, though I guess that might be obvious from watching that trailer.
M4gast0n @ Nov 2nd 2006 1:36AM
Yeah, it's a new tales game, one of two. I'm pretty sure it was previewed at IGN, but they said the DS "Tales of the tempest" was more innovative and fun looking (it looks AMAZING for a ds game)
Breserk @ Nov 2nd 2006 1:36AM
I'm almost positive it's a PSP game.
Red @ Nov 2nd 2006 1:45AM
tales of the world is the next game in the Tales of series. Will feature a few characters from previous installments.
Arche Klein (Tales of Phantasia)
Chester Burklight (Tales of Phantasia)
Stahn Aileron (Tales of Destiny)
Rutee Kartret (Tales of Destiny)
Philia Philis (Tales of Destiny)
Leon Magnus (Tales of Destiny)
Garr Kelvin (Tales of Destiny)
Reid Hershel (Tales of Eternia)
Reala (Tales of Destiny 2)
Nanaly Fletch (Tales of Destiny 2)
Lloyd Irving (Tales of Symphonia)
Kratos Aurion (Tales of Symphonia)
Genis Sage (Tales of Symphonia)
Raine Sage (Tales of Symphonia)
Eugene Gallardo (Tales of Rebirth)
Senel Coolidge (Tales of Legendia)
Luke fone Fabre (Tales of the Abyss)
Tear Grants (Tales of the Abyss)
Looks like it'll be a fun game. Create a character looks interesting too, not sure how much customization is on it, but from the preview its decent. Seems to also have characters from previous Tales of the World games that were on the GBA.

See, there are a series of Tales games which are "fan service" in a way. In those games you explode an RPG world and meet characters from the other Tales games which actually interact with each other and such. Always thought Lloyd and Luke would make good buddies? Just find out in this game. Complete fan service that the Japanese just love to eat up.

Not really into these sort of games, but since I'm a Japanese major I figure I'd take a shot at translating it. Basically the first part is talking about how you can create your own character: height, hair color, sex, and even their voice I think. Then it talks about how you can choose different classes and even change their outward appearances. Next it says something in reference to forming a group and how characters that are of a low skill level will be turned down. On to the dialouge which goes something like this...
Girl: "Isn't it a pet? Or maybe an escort!"
Pet: "I'm not a pet!" I'm called Morumo.
Then at the end it scrolls text at the bottom which is all about the game's music which includes some pop music hits.
That's about that. I'm sure I missed some stuff, but what I've included is accurate. That's my Japanese Homework for the day.

what are you guys talking about...what exactly is weird about this besides the fact that it's some random japanese anime rpg? i don't understand how this seems so out of this world to you, just looks like a star ocean jr. do you know that game? no? k. well i don't even see any old men in diapers which usually constitutes the "yeah, that's japanese wackiness" factor. at least research it a little before leaving the rest "up to us"
i mean for god's sake man, just check the side panel in video on youtube. there's 'bout a dozen videos that say TALES OF WORLD PSP TRAILER. but wait, that tells you nothing, sorry you're right. go ahead and call it Fable Lite. and add a reference to old navy while you're at it (seriously, WTF?). your blog entry is more random than this video, i'm sorry.

Sup Japanese major buddy. You covered it pretty well.
For a little further clarification, the first screen says the title (Tales of The World: Radiant Mythology) on the top, it says it's exclusive software to the PSP.
"Even though it's on the PSP, everything from dungeons to battles are modeled in 3D!"
Cameos from previous "Tales of" games.
Create your own "My character" Choose gender, height, skin tone, hair color, voice, and job class (various skills and characteristics).
As your fame increases, you can invite new members to your party.
The theme song is sung by "Number 1" female singer/songwriter (I don't know who) but she is apparently known worldwide.
You can preorder it now for release on December 21 with an MSRP of 4800yen (5040 after tax ($45)) And if you preorder you get a "dramatic" bonus DVD called "Lemon Gumi" (Lemon gang)
The cat also talks in Touhoku dialect.

"Well, I can't understand most of the hiragana, but I do know that the full name is "Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology.""
The katakana up there in fact just reads "Tales of the World". Or, if you want the raw romanized version, "tairuzuobuzeuwaarudo".
So, yeah. Just confirming the title is the same in the Japanese.
Mabui @ Nov 2nd 2006 8:52AM
I tend to ignore game videos, since I've grown spoiled by the Youtubes and Google Videos .. and just have no patience for the advertisements and laggy systems (with buffering times)
Jonathan @ Nov 2nd 2006 8:43AM
I think there's a typo in your romaji, I translate it as テイルズ オブ ザ ワールド
teiruzu obu za waarudo
(ザ translates as za, not zeu)
Evan @ Nov 2nd 2006 9:45AM
I love the anime cut-scenes. I dislike CG cutscenes, when I encounter them I feel like saying "let me play the game". However, when the cut-scene is 2D hand-animation, it feels like a reward. I want watch them!
penas @ Nov 2nd 2006 10:02AM
テイルズ オブ ザ ワールド
you are saldy mistaken.... its
teiruzu obuza wa rudo

Yeah, I watched the video and thought, "Oh hey, looks like a 'Tales of ____' game." I don't get the Old Navy gag though, what does that mean?
Kaemon @ Nov 2nd 2006 12:38PM
"but since I'm a Japanese major"
=o Wow, thats like only the third time in my life I've seen someone say thats their major (Myself icluded >_>) So I assume its not a common thing, (No one else in my main japanese class from the three I've had has said it is, and thats like over 100 differnt people) But I just started and am in the second year of japanese, so I still don't know a ton of stuff, but I got some of that same stuff from the trailer as well....
Back onto the game, it looks interesting, these Tales of the World games are always fun to play, just becasue you get to use characters you are familiar with and all that.
bookishboy @ Nov 2nd 2006 7:05PM
"Until we find out what's going on, it's Fable Lite."
Dude, FABLE was Fable Lite.
Jason @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:27AM
"6. "Fable lite"
Didn't that come out for the Xbox
:p"
According to its creator, Peter Molyneaux, yes.
