Geometry Wars Mobile published by Sony
It's Sony's turn to reap the benefits of Bizarre's creation. Despite Geometry Wars becoming the poster child for Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, the mobile port is being published by Sony BMG.Little ironies aside, how the heck are we supposed to control this game? They invented a dual-stick phone yet? Prove us wrong, but this is shaping up to be a classic example of exploiting a known brand. Geometry Wars Mobile just ain't gonna fly.
[Thanks, Justin]

I can't reach 700,000 on the 360... don't know how I can get to 100,000 on a phone.
Captain Obvious @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:35PM
I get it. It's a turn based strategy game, right?
otakucode @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:43PM
Cell phone games have been a bad idea from the start, and they'll continue being a bad idea. It took a long time for WebTV and other entirely misguided 'convergence' technologies to die, it'll take awhile for cell phone games that are more than the pinnacle of simplicity to die as well.
LordMinogue @ Nov 3rd 2006 7:54PM
If Sony went through the effort of getting Geo Wars in the first place, why nut put it on the PS3!?
I NEVER play games on my cell phone. My cell is a phone + timepiece + alarm clock (I hope to get a camera phone this winter, I would actually use it).
Games are for dedicated systems and interfaces.

I think it's funny how there is a general push to make games for the "mobile market" because of the millions of misguided consumers who will just dish out the small sum for a quick gaming experience. I'd almost say it was exploitation ... in some way, but it all boils down to choice, I suppose. In a word, Meh!

Im going to feel stupid asking this, but where can i buy this?
I dont have a 360, or will have the money to get one in the near future.

And your point is?

@otakucode, I hate to break it to you, but cell phone gaming won't die. WebTV is a terrible comparison. Why? Because WebTV had a singular purpose. Cell phone games on the other hand are an add-on for an otherwise useful device (kind of like PC games are for PCs). You should explore the market a little bit, you might be surprised. I play cell phone games a fair amount; more than I do my psp actually. The cellphone I always have on hand, the psp on the other hand tends to only get dragged out when I travel, or know I have a long wait ahead somewhere.
@LordMinogue, Sony didn't "get" anything, they're just publishing the cell-phone version of the game. If Bizzare Creations wants to port it to the PS3 though, I'm sure Sony would be tickled to publish that too; that is, if BC didn't do a deal with the devil already (which wouldn't be shocking, the game only costs $5 on 360, I'm sure it's heavily subsidized, and I'd be shocked if there wasn't exclusivity involved to boot.)

You know, I usually like what you guys have to say, but you sound like luddites here - I also have my doubts about GeoWars on a mobile phone, but there's no denying the impending wave of interest and profits as phones get even more saturation and more powerful -
"Informa Telecoms and Media, which says that global revenues from mobile games will be $2.6 billion this year and will be $11.2 billion by 2010. Most of the revenue comes these days from fees associated with downloading games, but that will change as online multiplayer traffic generates income from mobile operators, the report suggests. By 2010 online multiplayer games will account for 20.5% of total global revenues. The current challenge for mobile operators will be to convince a larger audience to adopt mobile games."

I mean, readers of Joystiq represent a small, core group of cynics, and it's almost a sure bet that if we were really allowed to run the industry, a game like Geometry Wars might never have been made in the first place. I say 'wait and see...'
I mean, it's win/win - if the trend dies, we'll never think about it, but if it's true, hey, MORE GAMES

if more people have cell phones, then it's a tad easier to sell games on it.
833 million cell phones were sold in 2005
6 million 360's sold to date
MetaHuman @ Nov 3rd 2006 10:37PM
But games like these aren't good without HD!
The consumers know nothing! The world is blind to the potentials of HD!!!!1+!shift!!!
OMG!
Tetris works on my Cell, but I really doubt I could go beyond Snake or Pac-man, interface user-wise. :P
LOL @ Captain Obvious's comment. Awesome.
Mat @ Nov 4th 2006 4:22AM
Just hope its not written in java, it'll run at 2fps.

I have no idea where you're going with this. I merely stated how I can't reach a certain amount of points in the game, and you go on about sales of cell phones.
And this is the comments section, I responded to joystiq's "Little ironies aside, how the heck are we supposed to control this game? They invented a dual-stick phone yet?"... somehow.
Metasheep @ Nov 4th 2006 4:50PM
It looks like it's using the number pad for the controls. They probably combined moving and shooting into one so you can only shoot forward.
#14 It will run at 2fps if you have a crappy phone. If you get a phone with some speed in it, then you can get some pretty fast stuff going. 3D even. Nothing like today's consoles, but around Playstation 1 quality.

I have over 60 games on my SE W600. these are the top pick from over 200 game files i have. Gaming on a phone is fun and addictive. I dont have a mobile gaming rig (DS or PSP) so my phone is it for me. Games like Street Fighter, Sims, Sonic the HedgeHog, Pacman all look nice for a cell phone.
