New CD mutilates 8-bit tracks
Our first thought when hearing about Dwell Records' recently released classic video game remix CD Power Up! was "Why pay money for this when I can download hundreds of free remixes at sites like OC Remix." Then we listened to some of the samples on the album's web site and said "Hmmm..."The piano-fied Marble Madness theme and the crazy breakdown of Mega Man 2's Metal Man theme (MP3 links open in a new window) were both especially impressive and potentially worth plunking down $15 for. We'll let you know for sure once we get a chance to rock out with a review copy.

The samples sound like crap, nothing special in my opinion, and certainly nothing original that you probably couldn't find for free online. OC Remix is definitely a good start.

I've heard that argument plenty of times when I was trying to help promote Project Majestic Mix or Squaredance from kfssstudios.

not worth it.

Yeah this sounds like its not worth it at all. Try listening to The Advantage, a band who I had the privilege so seeing live a few weeks ago. True NES covers, played by some serious rockers. No midi emulation all guitar baby.
Check em out, I'd say if you're going to spend 15 buck's it should be on them.

Ugh, if you want video game music listen to the Minibosses CD Brass. If you want good electronic, listen to Amon Tobin.
If you want to waste money, buy this cd.

"We'll let you know for sure once we get a chance to rock out with a review copy."
If you deem the CD to be potentially worth $15 then why are you waiting for a review copy? The samples are available for you to listen to so you can make up your mind. Why not buy it like everybody else?

Doesn't sound like anything I haven't already heard on OCRemix. I would not pay $15 based on what I've heard. $8, maybe.
ezkialrage @ Nov 3rd 2006 3:43PM
15 bux for that CRAP?? they butchered the Megz. i would listen to that cd if they payed me, and only then so i could piss on it. i would gladly pay (listen up OCR) around 100 bux for the ocr compilations so i can archive it.

Why, when you can torrent them all for free.

Hey Nick, there's tons of guitar on this record. Listen to those Upsilon and Ahlauchatistas tracks. Those are live bands, not some midi bullshit. Same goes for the Contra track by Cinemechanica (which is far more musically intense than the Advantage).
Plus, I've heard this whole record and it's amazing. It's not the same old schtick everybody else is doing. Really check out the Marble Madness piano solo, the last Zelda track (which makes the theme sound like an old Clint Eastwood movie) or the downright delirious Flossin song. This is a real experimental record, with real musicians grinding out serious love for the NES.
Download some full trakcs and you'll see what I'm talking about. Or wait for the review. I have a feeling the staffers will better elaborate on the intensity of this record.
The President has been kidnapped by ninjas! Are you a BAD ENOUGH DUE to save him?!?!

Yeah, I havent given it all a huge listen, just the first mp3 it was linked too, but I just don't enjoy their rendition of it, and from the above comments, no one else did too. Ill try the rest of it though, but I'm not hopeful.
Appetizer @ Nov 5th 2006 3:56PM
Woah, what samples are YOU guys listening to?? Bad Dudes and Rush 'n Attack sound killer, and Contraband's rendition of Alien's Lair could maybe be the best I've heard. Marble Madness on piano is friggin brilliant!
