New Smash Bros Brawl trailer flaunts combos, Fox

New characters Wario, Meta-Knight, Pit, Zero Suit Samus, and Solid Snake get their chance to shine. Snake, in particular, is shown sneaking in the prone position and pulling off some fast punches and kicks before pulling out a rocket launcher for the finale. The emphasis of combos and air combos should appease fans worried by comments made by director Masahiro Sakurai (and translated by forum posters) that hinted the title may be more simplified than its predecessor.
After the title screen crawl, Fox McCloud is unveiled as another character in the Smash Bros Brawl lineup, bringing the known lineup to 10 characters.

It looks great! Why wouldn't this be ingame? I think the character models could be done on GC, but the background look great. I'm still pumped, SSBM and Starcraft are the only games I never got tired of.
Nmaster @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:27AM
Fox rox ur sox.
The game's looking amazing, can't wait to here more about new characters. Hopefully the developers will get back to me on that interview about Brawl's hardcore appeal. This trailer looks good though in that sense.
Anyone else catch the way Snake was stalking Samus? Yeah, there's something going on there...
ck @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:30AM
I think most of that footage is in-game, how could it not be? Are you talking about the camera angles? But this game is starting to shape up to be awesome - the character models look great and so do the environments. It looks as though they're adding some cool new features to an already perfect game formula. I'm psyched for this. How much hype can this game get? It's crazy that this game is so big that they can reveal one character at a time - when they choose (and Fox was already in the last one!).
Matt Lite @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:27AM
MAN!!!!!! That was awesome. I like that Fox is still in there. Maybe they could think about adding Scuba Owl?

As long as the bat is still an OHKO on most everything, I'll be happy.
Unit @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:30AM
They stated that the footage is indeed actual in game, but besides that it looks xcellent and fun like the past versions. Meta knight's stage looks ridiculous with the large ship in the bkgd.
Pansyboy @ Nov 26th 2006 10:32PM
This will be the best console multiplayer game ever.
Screw Halo.
insertnamehere @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:30AM
I don't know Joystiq, Sakurai said previously that it would be almost all ingame footage in the upcoming trailer. It looked ingame (with some weird camera angles to be sure, but thats par for the course with all SSB trailers), and I would like to believe that Nintendo is being honest when they say its ingame.
Besides, it wasn't so unbelievably spectacular to make you think it was CGI.
007craft @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:30AM
few.. I can buy the game now. I loved smash bros 1 the most, I was a fox player. In smash bros melle, they completely ruined fox, but luckaly falco resembled the old fox to some degree. Now I just hope this fox is the same as the original smash bros fox and not the one from melle.
Jay @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:30AM
I still say that Poo should be in this game! I WANT POO!
Bob @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:33AM
heh, #7 wants poo on his wii
Timo710 @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:38AM
Somehow I liked the way fox looked in melee better , this time he looks to realistic and it doesn't match with his eyes.I will be playing as meta-knight , marth (if he returns) or pit.
Skwurl @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:40AM
Meh.
I never really could get into SMB. It's probably because I get schooled every time I play it. However, It looks like it will be good for fans of the genre.
Still, I must say that I'm a little dissapointed that the trailer didn't show any new game modes. It looks the 2 previous titles with new backgrounds a few new characters.
I was hoping for a bit of a change.
Noel @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:45AM
I like the original smash brothers a lot, but I found with the gamecube version, I spent more time avoiding being killed by the levels than I did my opponents. I like the variety of the levels, I just wish a lot of them were toned down a little bit.
ill trooper @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:25PM
Looks awesome. As usual, Nintendo brings something their competitors can't: a wide cast of characters from different games, all removed from their own games and brought together with a sense of humor and matter-of-factness that feels like seeing off-duty celebrities at a softball benefit - but snake brought his rocket launcher! The only thing that comes close is Kingdom Hearts...
I think the 'in-game' comment is questioning if the actual gameplay is being shown, with all the extreme angles and close-ups... It's pretty clear that the game engine is being used to create this 'trailer,' which feels like it's probably the little thing that runs while the machine waits for you to press start.
Is anyone else having a little chuckle over the 'trailer in HD' thing?
fanan89 @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:57AM
oh my god, a "Link video" with Snake, can this day get any better?
who's the angel boy?
Jim @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:54AM
This is definitely all in-game. It's in the same style that the old Melee in-game trailers were.
footlong! @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:56AM
Meta-knight not metal knight
Evan @ Nov 3rd 2006 11:56AM
I want Sonic! People have been wanting Sonic vs. Mario together in the same game since Sonic was first released in '91!
skwisgaar @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:01PM
@18
That's Pit from Kid Icarus, it was a game on the NES. It was said somewhere that he's getting a sequel on the Wii.
Steve @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:03PM
fanan89,
the angel boy is Pit from Kid Icarus.
Catgirls rule @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:12PM
"who's the angel boy?"
obviously that would be pit
unimental @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:13PM
This is going to be awesome online. The only thing better will be Mario WiiKart...
As for the Kid Icarus comments: I really hope Ninty revisits the franchise as promised. Perhaps utilizing the Zelda engine to bring Pit into 3D? However, I seem to remember this being hinted at during the buildup to the both the N64 and GC launchs, so i won't be holding my breath. Back to the emulator, I suppose!
the godfather @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:17PM
is it official that this game is going to be playable online? this would indeed secure my purchase.
GlitchCog @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:26PM
Yep, it's definately online.
"The footage is more than likely not in-game"
That's stupid. This is in-game footage. It looks exactly like in-game footage. It's simply not Nintendo's style to pretend pre-rendered stuff is in-game. They have their faults, but pretending pre-rendered CGI is gameplay isn't one of them. That's Sony.
Tacoman @ Nov 3rd 2006 12:33PM
Looking nice; I mentioned to my friend today that if it's anywhere as addictive as Melee, we could be playing this game in 2012(!) I'm wondering now that 10 characters are unveiled if that won't be the starting lineup and the rest will be unlockables, though Donkey Kong is probably a shoe-in. Ice Climbers had better make a return appearance, and throw in Ryuka (Lucas) from Mother 3.

I love super smash bros, both of them
BUT
if those are the only charecters im going to be pissed and im not going to buy it
and another BUT
Has anyone thought of the possilility tht WIIconnect24 could give us more downloadable CHARS that would be kick asss
NESS is the best
Aludra @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:25PM
I'm sure these aren't all the characters. They never showed Falco, Ganon, Young Link, Marth, Roy, none of them in the intro on the gamecube because they were unlockable. I'd kinda spoil it for new Smash Bros gamers.
KillerSlinky @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:13PM
From the looks of the stone statues and temple looking level and the destructable platforms in the big cloudy looking level that Rygar might be a playable character. Unless those are Pit stages, but I dont remember Kid Icarus looking like that or having destrictable environtments. Rygar would be bad ass. :D
Koekoenutt @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:16PM
@23
Yes, The game will be online, though rumor has it that it will only be 1v1 online. Disappointing at first, but I think I like that a lot still.
@30
I can almost gaurentee that is not the final cast of characters. There is still a lot in store for this game, as it wont be released until 2007. Someone mentioned there is no new gameplay shown, Im sure there are new types of single/multiplayer modes but they just want to hold it under wraps for a bit and just smoothly come out with videos showing new stuff and characters each time.
@5
I really enjoyed Fox in both games. The reason its different is becuase the games framerates and speed was raised in the GC version. The N64 if you play it now, is a lot slower of a game than Melee. Falco is slower than Fox so its just seems like that way. Fox is actually a lot better than Falco if known how to use him well and control his speed.
Also, Pretty damn sure most of this is all in-game. Pretty impressive and definatly one of the main reasons Im getting a Wii.
dan @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:16PM
So those are the starting lineup. I'm sure the others will be in the game, but they will be unlockables. I'm glad we get to start with new characters.
Max @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:17PM
where the heck is sonic?
Corbo @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:18PM
This certainly looks like it's going to be great. The online features alone would be enough to make me buy it but I imagine there are also various new modes as well.
@30, no way are these going to be the only characters. I'm fairly sure that it's been said somewhere that all the Melee characters are returning and there's still at least one new one still to show up. Downloadable characters would be cool and they could be made better by being downloaded locked until you completed some new challenge. So long as they're not charged for (yeah, I'm looking at you Electronic Arse) that'd go down great.
Also, did anyone notice what appears to be Wario's giant butt wiggling along behind Snake at about 1:37. You have to download the better definition trailer to see it clearly but still... that's weird. If this is in game, it'd have to be some kind of stealth fart attack.
Paul Gale @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:19PM
How awesome is this game going to be? Super Smash Bros. Brawl going to be one serious competitor in 2007 and it's second to Zelda: Twilight Princess as my most anticipated game. Nice trailer, now lets hope the game comes out on July 7th, 2007!

Ray Hargreaves @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:26PM
I'm pretty certain those are in-game graphics.
TDub301 @ Nov 3rd 2006 5:20PM
To everyone who has questions, go to smashboards.com and get them answered. Those are far from the only 10 characters that will be in Brawl, it will be online, and I read a little comment page in EGM that said that the creator of Smash Brothers is aware that the fans want Sonic and is in support of the idea. But like I said, go to smashboards.com and get made fun of for how little you know about Brawl, those people are true hardcore fans of SSB.
Ryan @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:38PM
"The footage is more than likely not in-game..."
Ignorance. Plain and simple.
kezia @ Nov 3rd 2006 1:48PM
From the latest issue of EGM:
"Mario versus Sonic-it's the matchup we've all been asking for. And apparently, so has legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. During a recent interview, the man behind Mario, Zelda, and several other Nintendo classics said that Sega's hedgehog would be the perfect addition to Brawl's cast."
Jake @ Nov 3rd 2006 2:12PM
sorry Joystiq but you got this completely wrong which is suprising for you. Check your contemporaries' sites like IGN, the game is COMPLETELY ingame footage.
smarterray @ Nov 4th 2006 4:49AM
fox been practicing jute keen do, apparently
Alfarif @ Nov 3rd 2006 2:30PM
It's in-game footage. Not only is it indicative of the fight scenes we saw from E3 but it's also Nintendo's style to show in-game footage over pre-renders. Not only that but I'm told it's been said that it's in-game footage but I'm a first year Japanese student so I'm not exactly the best translater in the world.
Aden Nak @ Nov 3rd 2006 2:35PM
One thing Nintendo has never done is substitute a bunch of CGI for actual footage and call it a game trailer. That actually works contrary to their whole idea of games being about THE GAME and not about the fluff. That's real footage. I think it's just more likely that after hearing nine straight months of "The Wii is just a Gamecube" people are surprised to find out that it is a much more powerful system (though still the weakest of the three graphically) than the anti-hype suggests.
Now, I grew up on Street Fighter II. Hell, I remember riding my bike for an hour in the hot August sun to get to the only Mortal Kombat II stand-up machine in my town. I also have sunk more hours into Bushido Blade 2 than I care to speak aloud. I loves me some fightin' games.
To that end, I especially like the Smash Brothers series. I actually think it's one of the more interesting games in that even the loser can come back with a big win. The fact that you need to be "knocked off" is always what makes the fights more interesting, because it prevents them from becoming just a war of attrition. Despite being the "least realistic" fighting game on the market, Smash Brothers actually shares one characteristic with one of the "most realistic" fighting games, the Bushido Blade series.
Your life and death aren't determined strictly by a horizontal yellow bar at the top of the screen. Anyone can win at any time, and even a badly beaten opponent can make a spectacular comeback with skill and luck and defeat an as-of-yet unscathed enemy. Smash Brothers is actually one of the only "party games" that I really enjoy (along with brief samplings of Monkey Ball), and I absolutely cannot way for Brawl to hit the shelf.
frickshun @ Nov 3rd 2006 2:57PM
It may have been poorly worded but I think "not in-game" meant the use of combos over special moves. Everyone should just re-read it & relax!
Tush @ Nov 6th 2006 4:22PM
I love the look of the Yoshi's Island levels! Very exciting.
blu3steel @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:07PM
I don't see how that's not in game
Ringworm @ Nov 3rd 2006 4:23PM
How about Mega Man with a few of his boss characters included in the roster? Also how about Blaster Master, Bomberman, and Simon Belmont from Castlevania 2? That would kick major ass!
