I'm confused, why give away that many PS3s? maybe five at each store sure, but 125 all together seems like a lot to give away.

Yea, I was at the Rockville one yesterday afternoon, and they had a sign outside for it. Too bad that Circuit City is one of the worst ones I have ever been to, short of the one in Gaithersburg!!!... While you are waiting after you get your voucher, head on over to Tower for their going out of business sale, they are open til midnight.

NYC, LA, Philly, DC, Chicago.... and Richmond? I mean... no offense to the fine residents of the Richmond area... but why there and not San Francisco or Miami? Seems kind of unfair that the Mid-Atlantic region gets four with two left for the rest of the country.

Circuit City appears to be putting on a sizeable PS3 promotional event, they already mention radio stations being lined up. I'm sure they got Sony to subsidize those giveaway units. Even if they're still losing a little money on them, look at it this way: if you showed up to one of these things with $600 put aside for your PS3, and all of a sudden you had a free one, you'd probably buy a ton of games and accessories with that extra money, which is what retailers _really_ make money on.

What isn't funny is the 1000's that are going to travel hundreds of miles coming from all directions only to be turned away because sony didn't make enough. hyping shortage is one thing but not having enough on hand for people willing to camp out for 2 days... your own loyal fanboys that = disasterous launch.

Already 6+ months late and having seen the 360 debacle last year couldn't they have spent the extra 6 months manufacturing systems? couldn't they have decided "let's have more respect for our fans than microsoft?"

Hey skyrous. They're doing that for Europe. Fans reacted reallll positively towards that, didn't they?

Sony is in a lose lose situation here.

You think they aren't making enough for shits and giggles? Please if Sony could have they would have (same with Microsoft). It's not like they turn a 'replicator' on and say "2 million PS3s please, hot." and voila, there are 2 million units ready to ship. It takes time to manufacture, package, and ship these things, they are highly sophisticated, as is the same with the 360. The only problem with Sony's launch is that it comes right before the 'blitzkrieg' of Nintendo's Wii, and a year into the 360s life cycle where numerous titles with the potential to be system sellers are going to steer away would be 'system waiters' away from the PS3. 360 was lucky that they had a somewhat 'botched' launch but were the only next gen system in town...

Plus, the PS3 already was behind schedule because of BluRay. No BluRay in the system and there would have been massive amounts of the PS3, and it would probably have launched in April...and Europe would have gotten it at the same time...

Jason, your lack of capital letters, punctuation, and repeated keystrokes has made my brain melt.

Plus, your question makes no sense. You want to try to sell your spot in line, then you ask us if someone would give you "the spot". What the hell?

Learn how to write first, kid. Then come back.

Well, you could always consider these giveaways to be the equivalent of the Mountain Dew bottle cap or whatever the hell it was giveaway that was going on with the 360 pre-launch.

Given that in the retail stores the Christmas shopping frenzy and fever is already starting, I unfortunately have to agree with #10 - at one or more of these stores, you're going to see police called and some serious fights breaking out.

During the 360 launch there were a couple of muggings in Wal-Mart parking lots. You KNOW there's going to be worse here - population concentration, everyone knowing these things are going to go for a lot on eBay - this is going to be SO ugly. I expect to see violence in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York.

Anyone think Circuit City didn't get the memo on how few PS3 units were actually made? If each of the stores have a 100 units, that would mean they own all the PS3 units available in NA and then some!

Explanation:
According to Wiki they have 632 stores x 100 = 632,000 units for the launch, unless of course not all stores get 100. Still I think they are wrong on their numbers.

What do you guys think?

SyChO,
obviously you didn't do so well in 3rd grade math. Even my students can tell you that if 632 stores each recieved 100 units that'd be 63,200 total, not 632,000. So please, for all of us, go back to 3rd grade.

Sorry I didn't answer you there, Jason. I was out busy having a life.

Man, I want a PS3 really badly... but all the games that I'm looking forward to won't be close to release until next year, so I'm saving my money for now.

My next major gaming investment will be in a 7800GS. I need to play Neverwinter Nights 2 FLAWLESSLY.

I'm surprised that the Rockville store is really that big. I work at the Best Buy across the street, one of the biggest stores on the east coast, and we're still not opening at midnight. Looks like we'll be getting all the punks who don't get PS3's there heading down the road to us.

Awesome! I live only 9 blocks from Union Square and still have an ID to get into the Palladium NYU facility to warm up and use the bathroom if I have to...Plus running back home for supplies (clothes, blankets, food, water, etc...) when needed won't be a hassle either!

lol @ you guys saying you'll "show up after school" to wait for th midnight launch.

i had a freind take me out to some big suburban best buy in chicagoland that was selling 360s at midnight.. by 3:45 or so there probably 250 people- it was a madhouse already, and school/work hadnt even let out.

those 100 will be gone by morning at the latest, i bet the campers that get it show up the night before.
