6 Circuit City stores with PS3 midnight launch and 100 units

Circuit City is laying some cards out on the table, while most stores are messing with minds and not giving numbers or launch details. 6 Circuit City stores will have a midnight launch on November 16 with 100 units up for grabs. The events officially start at 8PM, but if you want to be positive that you'll get one of the 100 units you should plan to arrive early -- by about a day, if not more, once this info gets out.
The six stores are:
- Union Square: New York, NY - Store 3679
- Torrance: Hawthourne, Los Angeles - Store 404
- Cherry Hill: Mount Laurel, NJ - Store 0734
- Schaumburn: Schaumburg, IL - Store 3111
- Rockville: Rockville, MD - Store 866
- Short Pump: Richmond, VA - Store 3549
At 10PM vouchers will be given to the first 100 people in line and at midnight you'll be the proud owner of a PS3. Circuit City also says, in what can only be considered a sign of an impending disaster, that five stores will be "giving away" five PS3s each to "win," and the Union Square store will be "giving away" 100. No details on what that specifically means, but there better be cops with an ambulance present and waiting.
[Thanks TopaZ -- Sorry, look on the bright side, you'll have company out there now]

1st post! w00t!! Too bad I don't live anywhere NEAR those shops.
Knoxximus @ Nov 5th 2006 4:10PM
Dammit!
nugget @ Nov 5th 2006 4:12PM
I'm confused, why give away that many PS3s? maybe five at each store sure, but 125 all together seems like a lot to give away.
Avinash_Tyagi @ Nov 5th 2006 4:17PM
Hmmm...Rockville is right near where my parents live, maybe I should procure a PS3 for resale on Ebay
Tom @ Nov 5th 2006 4:18PM
heh. id be funny (just outta pure randomness) if the ppl at the Hawthorne store went around after they passed out thier tickets saying "404, ticket not found."
robotrock @ Nov 5th 2006 4:25PM
east coast FTW
FuzzyPickles @ Nov 5th 2006 4:32PM
NYC, LA, Philly, DC, Chicago.... and Richmond? I mean... no offense to the fine residents of the Richmond area... but why there and not San Francisco or Miami? Seems kind of unfair that the Mid-Atlantic region gets four with two left for the rest of the country.

Circuit City appears to be putting on a sizeable PS3 promotional event, they already mention radio stations being lined up. I'm sure they got Sony to subsidize those giveaway units. Even if they're still losing a little money on them, look at it this way: if you showed up to one of these things with $600 put aside for your PS3, and all of a sudden you had a free one, you'd probably buy a ton of games and accessories with that extra money, which is what retailers _really_ make money on.
Lol @ Nov 5th 2006 4:35PM
Hmm that rockville store is like 5 minutes away from where I live, it's so tempting to buy one and ebay it.
foxhaze @ Nov 5th 2006 4:44PM
If anyone hasn't seen the riot police before, I guess now would be the time. Too bad none of those stores are even in my state.
CC Employee @ Nov 5th 2006 4:44PM
Fuzzy Pickles, Richmond is where the HQ of Circuit City is located.
skyrous @ Nov 5th 2006 4:50PM
What isn't funny is the 1000's that are going to travel hundreds of miles coming from all directions only to be turned away because sony didn't make enough. hyping shortage is one thing but not having enough on hand for people willing to camp out for 2 days... your own loyal fanboys that = disasterous launch.
Already 6+ months late and having seen the 360 debacle last year couldn't they have spent the extra 6 months manufacturing systems? couldn't they have decided "let's have more respect for our fans than microsoft?"
n8dogg @ Nov 5th 2006 4:55PM
Hey skyrous. They're doing that for Europe. Fans reacted reallll positively towards that, didn't they?
Sony is in a lose lose situation here.

You think they aren't making enough for shits and giggles? Please if Sony could have they would have (same with Microsoft). It's not like they turn a 'replicator' on and say "2 million PS3s please, hot." and voila, there are 2 million units ready to ship. It takes time to manufacture, package, and ship these things, they are highly sophisticated, as is the same with the 360. The only problem with Sony's launch is that it comes right before the 'blitzkrieg' of Nintendo's Wii, and a year into the 360s life cycle where numerous titles with the potential to be system sellers are going to steer away would be 'system waiters' away from the PS3. 360 was lucky that they had a somewhat 'botched' launch but were the only next gen system in town...
Plus, the PS3 already was behind schedule because of BluRay. No BluRay in the system and there would have been massive amounts of the PS3, and it would probably have launched in April...and Europe would have gotten it at the same time...

i know some of u will give me a minus star or say somethingg bad back to me but if i wait like an hour or two getting there really early at circuit city for a ps3 and try to sell my spot in line for like a $100 do u think someone would give me the spot
Ethan @ Nov 5th 2006 5:07PM
Wow! A Richmond one? Really? That's awesome. Too bad I'm not interested. But hey, the opportunity is so good, I might go pick one up to sell for a king's ransom on eBay to get more 360/Wii games.
n8dogg @ Nov 5th 2006 5:10PM
Jason, your lack of capital letters, punctuation, and repeated keystrokes has made my brain melt.
Plus, your question makes no sense. You want to try to sell your spot in line, then you ask us if someone would give you "the spot". What the hell?
Learn how to write first, kid. Then come back.
jason cubs bear bulls rule 4life @ Nov 5th 2006 5:26PM
i realized that just to lazy to fix it basically what i am saying is would someone pay $100 for a spot in the line for a ps3
n8dogg @ Nov 5th 2006 5:29PM
No. And I actually want one.
jason cubs bear bulls rule 4life @ Nov 5th 2006 5:29PM
i am not a kid just pissed about the the bears losing and i try to have a life and not care on what i type when leaving a fricken comment on a website.
alex @ Nov 5th 2006 5:33PM
i live very close to the schaumburg one, i cant wait to see all the people waiting for it
LONG LIVE THE 360!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
electro^plankton @ Nov 5th 2006 5:37PM
Of all the Circuit City's in Los Angeles, WHY THE ONE IN TORRANCE?!?!
That Circuit City smells like beer and chips.
Martin @ Nov 5th 2006 5:41PM
Yea, I was at the Rockville one yesterday afternoon, and they had a sign outside for it. Too bad that Circuit City is one of the worst ones I have ever been to, short of the one in Gaithersburg!!!... While you are waiting after you get your voucher, head on over to Tower for their going out of business sale, they are open til midnight.
DakidOG @ Nov 5th 2006 5:50PM
I guess i'll scope out the unoin square circuit city for a few days to see how early the lines come. I'm glad I live in the city, even if I can't get a place on the line there are a 100 ps3's waiting for owners.
Lou @ Nov 5th 2006 6:14PM
Schaumburg here I come. I hope the extra publicity doesn't hurt my chances. I will be there at 7pm.
Ethan @ Nov 5th 2006 6:26PM
Wow! too many people with the name Ethan around here anymore (Im looking at you #16) I think Ill change my name to what my PS online name will be, although I cant disclose that information right now, someone might steal it. Oh well, only 11 more days. http://www.bleacheatingfreaks.com/makeacountdown/?id=215163
slacker @ Nov 5th 2006 6:28PM
i will be at the Torrance store, since my 360 broke. yeah boy!
Anonymouse Rep @ Nov 5th 2006 6:40PM
Well, you could always consider these giveaways to be the equivalent of the Mountain Dew bottle cap or whatever the hell it was giveaway that was going on with the 360 pre-launch.
Given that in the retail stores the Christmas shopping frenzy and fever is already starting, I unfortunately have to agree with #10 - at one or more of these stores, you're going to see police called and some serious fights breaking out.
During the 360 launch there were a couple of muggings in Wal-Mart parking lots. You KNOW there's going to be worse here - population concentration, everyone knowing these things are going to go for a lot on eBay - this is going to be SO ugly. I expect to see violence in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York.
Fred Beebe @ Nov 5th 2006 6:45PM
Circuit City is based in Richmond, VA if anyone is curios why we are so lucky. I am sure we will have plenty of people from the south driving up days in advance for this one. I quessing at least starting on Sunday.
Greg @ Nov 5th 2006 6:47PM
I work at the circuit city in mount laurel we were just talking about the midnight launch yesterday
SyChO @ Nov 5th 2006 6:48PM
Anyone think Circuit City didn't get the memo on how few PS3 units were actually made? If each of the stores have a 100 units, that would mean they own all the PS3 units available in NA and then some!
Explanation:
According to Wiki they have 632 stores x 100 = 632,000 units for the launch, unless of course not all stores get 100. Still I think they are wrong on their numbers.
What do you guys think?
werk @ Nov 5th 2006 6:57PM
What do I think, SyChO?
Well, I think you need to brush up on your reading comp skills.
the fly @ Nov 5th 2006 7:21PM
What do I think, SyChO?
reading is fundamental
6 x 100 =600 last time i checked
travis @ Nov 5th 2006 7:26PM
SyChO,
obviously you didn't do so well in 3rd grade math. Even my students can tell you that if 632 stores each recieved 100 units that'd be 63,200 total, not 632,000. So please, for all of us, go back to 3rd grade.
rocko @ Nov 5th 2006 7:26PM
cherry hill??
aww man, times like these I wish I didn't live in Cherry Hill, and lived in Cherry Hill instead.
oh wait......
SuperHookie @ Nov 5th 2006 7:27PM
Give it up for Mt. Laurel...South Jersey!
Adam @ Nov 5th 2006 7:50PM
"I expect to see violence in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York."
If you think people are going to get mugged in Union Square, you don't know what you're talking about.
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 5th 2006 7:52PM
Only those 6 stores are guaranteed to have 100 PS3s for the launch. The other Circuit Stores will have much, much less.
Lou @ Nov 5th 2006 8:09PM
Schaumburg Illinois isn't exactly the center of violence. I think it will be pretty tame.
howhow @ Nov 5th 2006 10:00PM
I've learned my lesson from standing in line for xbox 360.
not worth my time
Anonymous @ Nov 5th 2006 10:10PM
I'm surprised that the Rockville store is really that big. I work at the Best Buy across the street, one of the biggest stores on the east coast, and we're still not opening at midnight. Looks like we'll be getting all the punks who don't get PS3's there heading down the road to us.
bounchfx @ Nov 5th 2006 10:26PM
@ #40, yeah- we'll see, I'll probably go there anyway to see how people are doing and how long the line gets. maybe play my DS and brag about how much better the ds is than psp and how my ps3 is already reserved, see if anyone wants to buy it ;)
Taha @ Nov 5th 2006 11:04PM
No one better dare come to the schaumburg CC... GRRRrrrr...!!
ill trooper @ Nov 5th 2006 11:11PM
Awww Yeah! Union Square Mayhem!
Shamus @ Nov 5th 2006 11:41PM
"I expect to see violence in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York."
Obviously you have never been to Union Square or you are just a complete moron. Not only is it constantly packed with people, it is surrounded by stores open very late, and has a relatively large and constant police presence.
Firefox90 @ Nov 6th 2006 12:05AM
I may go to the one in Schaumberg and pick up one to pop on Ebay. I don't think that will get to crazy there. I am thinking if I get there after school at around 4pm and wait count under 75, I'll camp till 10pm. Would be funny to see all the joystiq-ers there.
Blave @ Nov 6th 2006 12:27AM
Awesome! I live only 9 blocks from Union Square and still have an ID to get into the Palladium NYU facility to warm up and use the bathroom if I have to...Plus running back home for supplies (clothes, blankets, food, water, etc...) when needed won't be a hassle either!
robrob @ Nov 6th 2006 1:38AM
lol @ you guys saying you'll "show up after school" to wait for th midnight launch.
i had a freind take me out to some big suburban best buy in chicagoland that was selling 360s at midnight.. by 3:45 or so there probably 250 people- it was a madhouse already, and school/work hadnt even let out.
those 100 will be gone by morning at the latest, i bet the campers that get it show up the night before.
Maximus @ Nov 6th 2006 4:47AM
100 units in total? Guess the L.A. riots are going to start in Torrence this year.
joshm @ Nov 6th 2006 10:37AM
woot for schaumburg. hopefully i have no finals at depaul the next day.
but this publicity probably hurts our chances since it'll be circuit city or broke.
i'm not even ebaying it, just want it for the games :/
