Any commercial where a Rubick's Cube violently explodes, and then paints a room with it's "blood" is a winner to me. Way the hell better then that lameass crying baby ad (that probably had a lot of people watching the World Series scratching their heads...)

Still, Sony needs to have a commercial that shows just why the hell this thing costs so much - or an annoying ball of talking pubes...

"dpad: I was gonna say, 'no offence intended'.. but, somehow i knew if i left it blank you would respond like that.

Have a great day."

Truth stings, doesn't it?

I'll be having a super great day, thanks.

These commercials are just to weird for the average consumer. They seem more geared towards the Japanese fan-base that Sony has installed. In fact, the whole PS3 is really well suited for a culture that is as weird, demented, and sick as Japan's. Who else would be crazy and weird enough to spend $700 to play a PS3 and 1 game? Yeah, there you go. Sony and their exploding batteries are finished. They are so done, its hilarious.

It seems the purpose of this ad is to show the Cell processor is soo smart, it can solve a rubiks cube. Of course, that just confuses the shit out of many many others

It's not that hard to figure out; Sony shows some playthings, i.e. a doll, a Rubik's Cube, a chess piece, and the mighty PS3 has 'played beyond' them, overplaying them until they explode or bleed. Honestly, if you weren't so caught up in the 'hate' you'd probably think they were cool - or if they were for the Wii.

Ad campaigns, not always explainable, are often just for the mood. There will be plenty of ads showing gameplay; this is only the roll-out. This site needs to walk it off. Shake out the haters.

2001: A Space Odyssey is the theme of the commercials.
I personally liked the rubicks cube explosion, it was fancy.

I can't believe you say Gears of War has a familiar song to it... Compared to this. Trust me, more of the american public knows what 2001: A Space Odyssey is over Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko was great and all, but come on... 2001... 2000 and fucking 1.

Tho, the Gears of War commercial is cool as hell, because I like the Donnie Darko song :) I thought the Killzone commercial was pretty neat too.

These ads seem geared to people who are, at the very least, familiar with the Playstation .... I would further infer that it's an ad for hardcore gamers and less for everyone else. Which isn't necessarily a bad strategy. But when your whole strategy is to get households with casual gamers to buy the system so you can sneak Blu-Ray drives into everyone's homes, focusing on such a small demographic is kind of ass backwards, no?

Ok, lets all say this together

MOST VIDEO GAME COMMERCIALS SUCK

Particularly if they are advertising as-yet-to-be-released consoles

All of the commercials only give the vagueist idea of what they are selling (these commercials say NOTHING about the PS3) or they deliberately decieve (Only some publishers use actual in game screens) all that pre-rendered Video for the Dirge of Cerberus commercials originally made me think it was for the PS3

This is just another reason why the industry cannot be taken seriously; the commercials are either too low-brow (like those hideous Kirby: Canvas Curse Commercials) or too high-end (PS3 Ads)

I wouldn't expect game video in a brand ad (which is what this is) -- that's not why they do these. What does puzzle me though is what the brand is that they are trying to create. So far it feels dark and ominous and vaguely threatening. Whether you like the ads or not, the Xbox 360 Jump In ads speak to a much brighter and fun view of things than creepy dolls and exploding cubes -- and not the total absence of people having fun in the PS3 ads. It seems like an odd choice.

Kinda off topic, but i believe XBL has shifted to a new file compression system (WMA?) cause' the GoW trailer is 1/5 the size of the equivalent Halo 3 trailer (MB/Time)

@53
Whats funny is you only know the song from Donnie Darko and act like it isn't more to that. Whats also funny is how the song from Donnie Darko has such put the music in your head to think of the movie, like it should have. Im sorry but the Space Odyssey "music" if you want to call it that really doesnt have that much depth to it. It still is more familiar than the low tone music that was presented in this. When you hear that music again, will you think PS3? Probably not. That was my point. It didnt get to you like it should have.

Was just stating that Gears of War had more to it and was able to touch you emotionally. Good or bad. This ad just makes you think and confuses you. Geared to Hardcore gamers, but played mostly during football games. I mean come on, Your saying this is better than the Flower or Raindrop ad? Especially for the most of the people who SEE it on TV and not the internet.

I would hate this ad for the Wii, The Xbox360, for anything.. It doesnt suite well and although there is a message and commonground when you sit and think about it.. It doesnt hit you hard and fast like a commercial should.

People say they just want to get the release date out and know its coming, and they will show game videos later.. but the Flower and Rain ad has a lot of depth to it, and at the end they show off what they mean with a video of a game for launch. ///7 is pathetic too, for only wanting to get the PS3 logo and the date out. The Japanese ads are much better for US than these PoS ads.

Well the Japanese ad are even worse and stranger. Sony really has problems getting any decent press for their console if only crazy, sick, weird, Japanese people are interested.

Stranger.. Yes. Worse, I wouldnt say so.

In japanese they at least say. "Playstation 3 coming December 11th" as the whole point to the commercials were showing 11/11. Which in my opinion, was a better way just flashing some wierd shit and then PS3 logo and system, then ///7. Americans dont want to sit there and think about it to get the message. Maybe in Japan they do, but definatly not here in the Land of the Lazy.

Maybe if the baby had like 11 17 in his eyes, or there was a message here saying Playstation 3 coming November 11th, play beyond. or something of those lines would have gotten this message out without so much fuss.

Its Sony trying to be smart with it, but it goes over peoples heads. On top of that, it still doesnt get to you like most commercials do and should. There is nothing to attach yourself with, nothing to trigger something in your brain to think of PS3.

At least with the Japan ads, seeing anything that resembles 1 1 1 1 would make you think of PS3. Like the Fork ad. Nonsense, Yes.. but gets the message across unlike these US ads.

Also, the only thing going for these commercials is that they are so wierd and full of nonsense, that people like us are talking about it on blogs and the internet. For me, thats the only good thing coming from these commercials, and I wouldnt say harsh reviews and argueing about the commercial isn't really 100% good either. It works for the hardcore gamer and sony fanboy in a way, but there is no doubt in my mind and a lot of peoples minds that these commercials are dull and could be a lot better suited. Especially for TV where its not just the hardcore gamers, especially at times where gamers aren't watching the tv, on channels we arent watching. Adult Swim is the only place it makes sense to me, which was a good move.

Any commercial, as wierd or nonsense filled as it is.. can make sense to someone down the line if thought bout it long enough or talked about long enough. Doesnt make it good though.

Funny how everyone complaining about advertisment that doesn't show in-game action are the same people that love Apple commercials and Apple packaging.

Does anyone here watch X-Play? If so, does anyone remember the character Johnny X-Treme? One of his best lines was, "It's so extreme it will kick your balls off." I could not stop thinking of that line the entire commercial, even though that wasn't the style Sony was going for, obviously.

I think the problem is that a lot of people are going to be confused by this ad. If they couldn't get their point across and compell people to go by the system, then the ad was a failure. It is not all fanboys saying that the ad wasn't very good, >.

Hahah, I totally didn't get that. I figured the rubik's cube was solving itself.

This commercial sucks.. it's confusing, and it makes the PS3 look like that giant obelisk from 2001.

They should stick to the commercials with the voice over movie guy telling us cool things about what the cell can do. This rubix cube/baby from tartarus crap is just odd. The explosion was cool, I admit that. But ... what does this say to the everyday consumer? Not much.

This brings up one of my favorite questions.

Nintendo: advertising maybe? no? yeah ok, you do that. We'll see how it goes.

Unless the sports announcers will be playing Madden on Wii, on live television, during monday night football, Nintendo needs to um...advertise...y'know, like companies do when they have a product they want to sell.

No wonder most of you didn't like it... it isn't aimed at you.

i think using a rubik's cube might be too nerdy since that's what the cube's usually associated with in social culture, unless of course that is the audience they're shooting for.

is the cell processor smarter? i thought a computer is no more smarter than the person who programmed it, unless they mean smarter as being more efficient because of multiple pipelines or whatever new sorts of things the cell processor has. "faster" would've been more appropriate in my opinion.

it seems like sony is trying to show off the hardware too much, but they really should try to showcase the games because i think it's the application of the hardware that's gonna impress the consumers more.

though compared to the baby commercial, i did like the rubik's cube one better.

They are doing very well with the ad campaigning. Regardless of what you say about the ad, the fact that you did say something about the ad is exactly means they were successful. Besides, the PS3 sells itself. They don't need to advertise it. I have seen some previews of the next Gran Turismo (Gran Turismo HD, I think) and it is becoming difficult to distinguish a video clip of a real race from one of the game. I think it's amazing. As for the price, all systems start out high at first. The original Playstation was $400 back in 1994 and it blew everyone's mind when it came out. The original Nintendo was $200 back in 1987. The PS3 will sell out even if they charge $900 for it. Plus the latest HD-DVD players are $500 anyway. You're actually getting a deal.

Post 11 said, "Does Sony actually have any games to show that aren't pre-rendered movies?"

This seems to be Sony's MO. Gets old. It might be that the platform is that limited, but I don't think so. Hopefully they'll get a new approach.

The story about Rubik's Cube is tremendously American, yet completely Hungarian.

1974, during the Communist rule over Hungary. It wasn't produced until 1977 by Politechnika, a Hungarian toy company. Ideal Toys brought the toy into major production in September of 1978. In 1979, Seven Towns Ltd., a London-based company, worked with Ideal to market the toy. Finally, in May 1980, Rubik's Cube got its name and started to be exported from Hungary.

The rest is history.
