Metareview - Gears of War (Xbox 360)

If your complaining so much about how the campaign is short then play it on hardcore(adds a couple hours) or insane(adds atleast 5 hours and sweet bragging rights).

Compared to other shooters its an average length.

Also you could replay the campaign through co-op or OMG play multiplayer on XBL(adds HUNDREDS of hours)!

i hate sony no offense i just dont like there products but its just hard to wonder if 360 had an hd dvd drive for games thats it i love 360 i hate ps3 and thanks to my gamestop i cant play gears of war till tomorrow cause they are not coming till tomorrow

Isn't GoW's 10 the same reason the Nintentards have been jizzing over the Wii.. pure fun? Sure the game isn't perfect if you analyze it to death, but it sounds like the amount of pure entertainment the game offers outweighs all the minor imperfections. Take a break from all the Fanboy Wars and go enjoy being a gamer

Picked mine up today at a gamestop in Union Sq, NYC. So the game is available no lines and no problems. Being a PC FPS person I sure do miss my mouse but, this game looks so great im willing to learn the controller just for it.

I have to agree that a FPS with horror elements is a pretty niche market, and thus a 100 score is quite questionable. But I guess that's par for the course these days. I mean, you'd never have a more general arcade game with broader appeal get a score that high, even if the execution was flawless.

I just think its pretty sad that this game in ONLY 6-8 hours long (even on insane) and it STILL received a "perfect 10" when I KNOW that ANY OTHER less hyped game would receive a lesser score. Also what 'new game concepts' does this game bring to the genre? NONE its been DONE before by Killswitch so NO cliffy B did NOTHING new. Its another Halo. ALL hype and no substance. Its also funny that cliffy is all ' well when you play multiplayer it adds to the game'. thats bullshit because ANY other game would LOSE review scores if its multiplayer 'lacking' so why all of sudden is multiplayer more important than the single player?? ALso games have been docked for having BAD voice acting, which this games DOES have but because its MS and because it was SO fucking hyped up everyone 'forgets' about those lil inconsistencies, when those little things are what make a game 'great' its like cliffy said, fuck being innovative, fuck voice acting, fuck all the lil things, lets just make this game look good and have MS hype the fuck out of it, the MS fanboys are blind i mean look at Halo NO STORY whatsoever and they ate it up, lets do that here only 3rd person and better graphics and theyll love it"

Ok enough of that rant, i do give credit where its due. The game looks AWESOME, the graphics are deserving of a good score. Multiplayer is usually ALWAYS fun no matter what game so i dont really see the big deal there. The scores IMO should read like this:

Graphics: 10 ( yes they are awesome looking )
Sound : 7 ( sounds average, voice acting needs work )
Gameplay 8 ( tries to refresh the 3rd person "killswitch" genre and does a fine job)
Multiplayer 9 ( it sure will be fun as soon as my bro brings it over)
Replayability: 7 ( 6-9 hours, since we are all gamers here (specifically if your a MS gamer, you KNOW ALL about FPS/Shooters, even on INSANE this game will be a BREEZE, if it takes you longer, then i cant wait to play your ass : gamertag jojoi89)
Overall Score: 8

Costco ships me a copy, like 3 days early, then they ask me to return it.

Then I go to Gamestop to preorder my copy of Halo III Legendary, on the 6th, and they give me a copy of Gears of War on the spot.

I feel bad for those who haven't gotten it yet, it deserves every point it recieved.

With regard to the comment about how if your an MS gamer all you know is First Person Shooters, you obviously missed out on tons of great Xbox and 360 games. The only FPS I've owned on either console were the 2 Halos, yet I've played TONs of great games:

And that's just a quick glance at my collection of great games I have on my shelf, yet all Xbox game players apparently only play FPS? This and now I have Gears, Viva Pinata, a new Star Trek game, and tons of other games to look forward to with Mass Effect come next year to keep me enthralled. I'm not a 1 system gamer but please leave that ignorance elsewhere.

Gears of war would be a much longer experiance on PS3 due to the 8+ hrs of extra load time.

I just passed the game in 5.5 hours!!!!! what's this bullshit about 36 hours it takes to complete. Bravo 1UP great reporting!

I was highly dissapointed at the shortness of the game. Just like Prey. Way too short.

If the 6 hours single player game length is true then i won't be getting this. There are a lot of gamers who don't bother playing online and just as with Halo2 this game could be over just as it's getting good.

So, the single player can be summarized as

1. Locust comin' in the room.
2. Shoot him in the head.
3. SHOOT him in the HEAD.
4. His gun is firing.
5. Press "A".

After having played this last night for a few hours, I can definitely say this is one of the best games I have ever played. The graphics *are* next-gen. The sound is very fitting, and the action is intense and well-paced. I didn't like Halo or Halo 2 (could never get used to FPS on console) but I am loving this game. Definitely closing in on a 10/10 in my book.

Congrats to Cliffy B and the team at Epic. Now the sales on Gears of War need to match the acclaim that the game is recieving.

This looks like the first true game that is going to shift the 360 and couldn't have come at a better time.

The fact that it isn't Halo would help sell more machines because it is providing a new gaming experience.

Just played 10 mins of the game. Who ever thinks this game is below an 9.8 is flat out crazy. Period! I'd give it a 10 just because it's astounding.

Not sure where to start on giving my 2cents about this game. First off, I did not have any games on the 360 (traded in fifa 06, Kameo, DOA4) a long time ago. I did not buy any new games because none appealed to me so much until I heard about GOW and saw videos of it. Last night I played it for about 6 hours with a friend of mine who has pre-ordered a PS3, and said he would never buy a 360, until last night. So, his, and my take on this beautiful "eye candy" game is that it is not just gorgeous, but really well thought out. Take this for instance, there is one level where these night creatures (don't know name) that attack where there is lack of light. So, I had to climb up to this building, get the light on my comrade the whole time while he looked for a way of turning some lights on. It is these little things that amazed us, besides the incredilde tactical shooting, the run for cover and shoot. It reminded me of when I was a kid playing hide and go seek, just with guns here. Really cool! This morning I played a little on Live, and man oh man, that was AWESOME. So, my take, I am not a professional reviewer, hence I did not see any flaws. It has a new way of killing enemies, cover and shoot quickly, but also chainsaw. I never thought gore would make me glee, but this game somehow has that effect on you. Buy it, or rent it if you are unsure, one thing is for sure though, if you were waiting for the best game out there for any system (I loved Halo, but this is even better), then this is the game to get. Btw, the dialogue is pretty kick ass too. Videonary rocks!

The reviews rave about the graphics. But I've heard some negative feedbacks from those who have bought it. So who to believe? Hmm... I say listen to the people. I guess even in games, it's all in the eyes of the beholder. As for me, I remain neutral.
