How does 480p wide screen content look on your hdtv?

None of the above. 576i is currently my only option, PAL FTW.

For video games, 480p looks just fine on my HDTV (55" CRT RP) - Most DVDs at 480p look fine as well, except for the really cheaply made ones (which tend to sparkle a lot).

Finding component cables for my Wii is #1 on my list of things to do now, as I won't even bother using S-Video/Composite connections.

Note - I've been using my GC at 480p for years.

Well, since High-Def is essentially a next gen standard, I'll take any limping-in the Wii can do. Still...I'm not looking forward to switching between PS3/360 to Wii for different games. If it's worse than the downgrade of switching from Xbox/Gamecube to PS2...which sucks...I'm going to be sad.

I voted 480p, but it doesn't really matter for me because my tv upgrades everything to 1080p(HP md5880n). Ultimately if you have a tv like that then the difference between 480p or i is minimal.

480i here. My 27" SDTV doesn't support progressive scan, though it does have a set of component inputs which make DVDs look nice. I'll most likely run my Wii over S-Video, same as the rest of my consoles.

480p, by the time I get my Wii hooked up to the Dell 2407, I'll have the Mac on DVI, the 360 on VGA and the Wii on component. Gotta love Dell screens with multiple inputs :) .

One of the things I'm most looking forward to on the Wii is playing my GC library in 480p 16:9. I got my Cube after they dropped the digital video output on it, so I was stuck with 480i stretched on my TV.

Right...
I'm disappointed Nintendo didn't make good on their original VGA claim, so I guess I'll be running in 480i until someone makes one...

Dracula Jones (#8), hardly any GameCube games run in 480p, and only Nintendo's first party titles and (generally) higher-quality or later third party titles even run in 480p. Even moreso, almost no GameCube games support 16:9. The only one I have is F-Zero GX, and I own over 20 GameCube games, at least.

Anyway, I have a 42" Panny EDTV in my living room, so if a game supports 480p, I play it on that, but if it only supports 480i, I play it on the 20" tube TV in my bedroom. Of course, I only play any game over the highest-quality cables I can, which was for GameCube component and will be for Wii component.

I'll be using whatever comes out of the box with the Wii. I don't have time to buy new cables because I need all my time to play Zelda.

Seriously, why do they even let cubeboy101 talk anymore? It hurts my brain as soon as I finish the top line of whatever he writes.

I think we should petition and have him removed from the website.

But on topic... 480p. I'm running my GCN at 480p and I can't wait to see the Wii replace it's cozy spot next to the 50" TV. :)

@ Topic - You can bet your sweet Wiimote I'll be playing Twilight Princess in all of it's widescreen progressive scan glory. =P

Josh, I found a really useful spreadsheet (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=649817) a couple months ago that listed all the 480p/16:9 games. Most of the GC games I own are 480p, and the two I'm most looking forward to replaying with friends (SCII and F-Zero) are 16:9.

So yeah, not a whole LOT of them support it, but it's still cool for someone with an HDTV and no GC component cables.

Matt Schley: at the kotaku website, someone has taken pictures of every page of the nintendo world handbook. One of the pictures is of a cable attachment which looks like a vga cable.

That's a D-Terminal input, which is just a kind of component input on Japanese TVs.

I voted for 480p, but dunno if I'm actually be able to select that option. I'll be connecting my Wii to my Samsung 19" LCD computer monitor, but I have no idea if they will make any VGA or DVI connector to connect directly (or with an adpator of some sort). Otherwise I'll either use my Startech Video Game Jockey to connect with S-Video (but only goes out as VGA) or try a direct S-Video connection to my video card.

Cubeboy, If you want to rant, make a website that nobody will go to. Don't soil the name Wii Fanboy.

--------------------------
I'm still debating whether I put my Wii in my room, with an old non-hdtv, non-16:9, plain old 24" TV, or put it in my living room, where there's a 16:9 48" HDTV, but sometimes there's people watching TV in there. So, It's either play all I want on a crap TV in my room, or play sometimes with a sweet TV, or both, by moving my wii back and forth. I don't know. Speaking of which, how much do component cables usually cost?

Well, I'll be hooking my Wii up with component probably, just because my CRT monitor can accept it, although, it isn't HD. Still looks better than composite.

The official Nintendo cables will be $30. And that's what I'm going to do. Play in the living room if I can, unless I really want to play a game, than into my room it goes.

I don't even have a TV!
Apparently I'll need to find a way to get VGA out of that thing, which most likely will end up being that X2VGA thing or similar.
And then it will be 480p on my PC monitor.
If only they did VGA...

@cubeboy and David,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost certain that the PAL Cube ran at 480p when using progressive scan. So the choice was interlacing or higher resolution. This may have been fixed, but my choice is made for me by my elderly TV, so I haven't really looked into it.

32-inch 1080i HDTV owner here. I'll have Wii running in 480p over component, right next to my Xbox 360, which I've currently got running in 1080i over component. Someday I might also get a PS3, which I will hook up via HDMI and run it in 1080i.

I put Don't Know for now, since I wasn't sure how it would work on my tv. If I plus in component cables to my TV, but it doesn't support Progressive Scan, will I still get a nice clean sharp image?
