Metareview - Every Extend Extra
Q Entertainment's been on a roll -- at least, in the handheld market (let's forget Ninety-Nine Nights ever happened). Lumines was arguably the PSP's best title up until this week, when the sequel dropped; and Meteos was a heralded effort for DS. So, not straying too far from the formula, the developer has offered up another portable puzzler, this time, an adaptation of popular freeware title Every Extend.Did Q Entertainment morph freeware into blockbuster? Or is Every Extend Extra too niche to capture the imaginations of block-falling junkies? Here are the critics' takes:
- PSW Magazine UK (90/100) - "[We're] delighted to report that it's also as frightfully addictive as its handheld brother, Lumines ... we've been vying to top the leaders boards and add 'just one more' to our max chain all week, and we're confident we'll still be playing Every Extend Extra in months to come."
- Game Informer (83/100) - "Only those who thirst for that elusive mastery of the concept will be playing for weeks on end."
- 1UP (60/100) - "Every Extend is as addictive as the best puzzlers, so it's painful to see its pumped-up remake bogged down by over-the-top special effects ... it's probably best to stick to the free version."

Come'on, N3 wasn't that bad! The storyline is pretty good, graphics are gorgeous (on the 360 at least) and it's fun in its own mindless way. It's a little overpriced maybe.

um, what = the extra?

Why pay for something that's free, particularly when the original was rather bizarre? Maybe I'm just too old, or don't fall into the right 'niche' ...

#2 why pay for bottled water when its free from a tap? Because you can drink it while you are out of the house away from a tap? The same reason you buy EEE on PSP.

@Yakko: The free online game only has one level, isn't portable, and doesn't have spectacular effects.
You know what's weird? I didn't know about Every Extend until I heard about E3. Good game, I suggest checking it out.

Never got an e-mail to my first comment, so here goes again:

That's the link to the original free version, and it's pretty fun. No limits/restrictions/etc.

When the likes of EDGE and GamesTM are rating Every Extend Extra 8/10 I'm wondering where 1UP get their ratings from. Ah well, not everyone's going to like it, that's for sure.
However, PSP owners looking for something a little different needn't look any further.

That may be the best looking box art I have ever seen.

picked this up today. and heres my opinion.
~All these games have something in common(REZ, Lumines, Every Extend Extra) the fast, hard hitting, ambient electronic music.
Only people who are into this genre of music will enjoy these games. These are their own category which i label as Rave-Games. (Mizuguchi created REZ after being influenced by a rave he attended in japan)
Did you like the free game Every Extend? i did. so did the guys at Q? which is why OMEGA is credited for EEE. You can even play the original mode that OMEGA created as an option in EEE.
There IS a limit to OMEGAs free game on the PC though... its 1 or 2 levels. Thats it.
Q? took his game, added the techno that we(the people who actually play these games) love, spiced up the visuals (again think of a rave, and taking drugs and you have the graphics of one of these eye-melting games)
I dont expect anyone who has never played REZ and loved it, to play this and like it. You are either into the music/visuals, or youre not.

In my desperation Tuesday when my suck-ass EB didn't have Lumines II in stock yet, I grabbed EEE, and I have to say - it really wowed me. I got sucked into it right off the bat, but the more I play and the more I get the hang of it, the better it's become.
IGN complained about "too much going on," and I agree that the 'hectic-ness' of it all can make things confusing, but maybe it's my Geometry Wars "mad skillz" that allow me to deal with that. Sure, it makes the game a little more complicated, but if it was too simple why buy it?
I like it, definitely worth a pickup for anyone looking for a PSP fix - even if you wait for one of those dry spells after the holidays.
