Today's hottest game video: PS3 porn
Today's most watch YouTube video is the Robot Chicken Mario mash-up, so we go to the second-place finisher: more voyeuristic PS3 porn brought to you by Kotaku. This badly lit, handheld footage -- they know that turns us on even more -- shows the PS3 being whisper quiet. The PS3 sits like a theatre star in a dressing room, feigning indifference, batting its lashes, knowing we're watching but not letting on. We look only from the corner of our eye, hoping the PS3 doesn't catch us. The only thing disturbing the moment is the narration of Brian Crecente, but he tries to be unobtrusive, speaking in hushed tones of wildlife documentaries.

PS3 blows. Viva la Revolution!!!
ill trooper @ Nov 8th 2006 12:19AM
Nice! I was wondering if it REALLY was quiet... My 360 and my G5 are like wind-tunnel tests, and yeah, I sit within 4 feet of both, so a quiet box is desirable to me.
Plus, that's all handled internally - no external powerbrick. Even haters have to admit that's pretty cool.
But of course you won't.
RaDd @ Nov 8th 2006 12:14AM
"loading....its still loading...loading....loading..."
lol
Kuan @ Nov 8th 2006 12:14AM
I find it interesting that all these people and sites that are talking about how important HD is and how everyone will be using it or is using it are using standard definition average joe TVs like the rest of the world. HD is still a long ways off and, until my trusty 1988 Toshiba 19" goes to heaven, I am not going to shell out mega bucks for some high-tootin, new-fangled HD contraption.
serb @ Nov 8th 2006 12:16AM
who is this guy and how the hell did he get a ps3
Pixelbox @ Nov 8th 2006 12:20AM
Admittedly I don't have nearly as much hands-on time with the PS3 as Brian Crecente does, but in my experience it was by no means "whisper quiet," especially when loading a game--which seemed to take longer that I'd hoped.
Toys for Fred @ Nov 8th 2006 12:25AM
"The game is started (00:42)...it's now loading..still loading...and..still loading...um... loading right now...ok, pre-loading...and now it's loading the profile...(2:06)..game's running!"
TopaZ @ Nov 8th 2006 12:19AM
And whereTF is Joystiq's PS3?!? They're just as popular as Kotaku, if not more.
Shaymus22 @ Nov 8th 2006 12:26AM
I'd rather have a louder, faster console than a quiet slow one. Thanks, but no thanks, Gears of War and Halo 3 for me please. I'll be keeping the $600.
Scott E @ Nov 8th 2006 12:27AM
I don't understand why there are no ps3 videos that show actual gameplay????????? If the best thing that the ps3 has going for it is the menu and the quietness, what gives??? I want some straight up 'turn the ps3 on, load the game and then play the fucking thing!!!' I DON"T CARE WHATS UNDER THAT STUPID FLAP! maybe if I saw a video of what the thing was actually used for (gameplay) i'd be interested in the high-priced thing.....
Aex @ Nov 8th 2006 12:45AM
So from game start up from the XMB to playing, it only takes 1:24m. That isnt that bad considering, the brand logos, warnings and yada yada it takes to get thru it all. I don't have an Xbox to test out what the load times from start up are, but FFXII for the ps2 takes the same amount of time from bootup from the menu to ingame play. It doesn't feel like a long load at all. Load times during start up are always skewed by things like, brand logos and crap.
Can't really tell how loud it will be in my living room but from the video it seems to be a little quieter than my DVR.
aobk84 @ Nov 8th 2006 12:45AM
Just show us that damm game instead of other stuff.. tired of it
MrD @ Nov 8th 2006 12:54AM
It is pretty amazing compared to the 360. It's probably about as quiet as the Gamecube.
Though, I wish it did have an external power source, so you'd only have to spend $30 on a new one if it crapped out.
FSK405K @ Nov 8th 2006 1:10AM
The guy is a loser....He's connecting with a composite cable.
KillerSlinky @ Nov 8th 2006 1:14AM
Damn that thing was shiny. Do I have to regularly Turtle Wax my PS3 to keep that glossy sheen?
TopaZ @ Nov 8th 2006 1:18AM
Also, aren't load times really in the hands of developers? Some PS2 games "stream" their levels and never load at all. And on PS3 games that "install" to the hard drive like Genji have substantially faster load times.
lets just put the gun down and we go get me those fries @ Nov 8th 2006 1:22AM
nice and quiet love it. (looks at watch to see how long it takes for the libelous xbots to come in here and continue their sony bashing mission...)
computer gamer @ Nov 8th 2006 1:35AM
Man, the loading times really do suck. I got annoyed waiting for it in a video never mind in real life when you just want to switch games for a quick blast on RR7 or something before you go out... my zx spectrum was faster loading from tapes!
Oh, what's that? You can install parts of the game and clog up the hard-drive as an inelegant hack/work around to the slow blu-ray reading times? Welcome to the future!
I think it's great that it's quiet, and I admit my 360 is noisy (more than I like when a game is spinning) however, I will take that and quick loading times, value for money console and a controller with all the basics (like rumble) over something which only ever gets calls of "oooh shiny" or "ooh quiet", because those 2 things have always mattered to your enjoyment of games.
Poor brainwashed fanboys.
hohoho @ Nov 8th 2006 1:36AM
it seems to me the loading is not a screen saying loading or moving images of a spinning disc. Some current games won't allow you to skip those logos and when the grandpa simpson screamed "turn it up! turn it up!!" correct me if i'm wrong, the loading vids had been based on the nba game.
btw, gow (gear not god hehehe) is sweeeet. But i wish i could go ramb00 like in h2. Looking forward to my ps3 and wii soon! ehehehe...
ts8lemonade @ Nov 8th 2006 1:49AM
Couple of things. Loading...I hate loading, which is the main reason the PSP sucks, well that and the fact that 97% of the games for it suck :P Secondly, I would rather have an external power unit, just in the event that something goes wrong I can just buy a new one, won't have to send it in and go through all the hassle. The power unit on my 360 just sits behind my entertainment unit, where I never see it and it has plenty of ventilation.
damo @ Nov 8th 2006 1:52AM
how come now one has mentioned the similarity between the PS3 and the focacia toaster sitting next to it... They look identical
Einhanderkiller @ Nov 8th 2006 1:54AM
Scott E., if you bothered to watch the video, there was gameplay.
Hana @ Nov 8th 2006 2:02AM
Loading...loading...goooone...
Internet Troll @ Nov 8th 2006 2:29AM
Loading...loading...it's still loading
It's warm...but it's not hot
It's loading...pre-loading
I'm gonna do a quick game
*button smashing*
Now loading into the game
Ahhh I rock
Not really I suck at this game
Code @ Nov 8th 2006 2:45AM
ALL OF YOU ARE GAY.
and xbox fanboys.
Aphony @ Nov 8th 2006 3:28AM
I want every system.
Mr.Nitemare @ Nov 8th 2006 3:49AM
The loading times are HORRIBLE!! And i agree that it should have an external power source, i can imagine it now..accidentally get a shortage in the power cord..now instead of just going in to buy a replacement plug..now i have to send in my PS3 just to get the chord fixed. and i don't know what he was talking bout...but that thing was loud not super loud but still loud none the less..i'll be sticking to the wii which i saw had load times of less that 20 seconds, many times almost instant....sorry Sony i have to go with Nintendo this go round..
DakidOG @ Nov 8th 2006 4:27AM
@11 ARE you a freaking idiot? offcourse your going to hear a fan if a machine has one. Let's see the dude basically hooveres over the vents, if you did that with a 360 you'll probably think a tornado was in your house.
ill trooper @ Nov 8th 2006 4:28AM
""oooh shiny" or "ooh quiet", because those 2 things have always mattered to your enjoyment of games." - computer gamer
Just stop, guy: just because I like how it's quiet does NOT mean that's ALL that matters to me... It's just two more things to like. OF COURSE no one likes loadtimes, but that't the way it is - the 360 has 'em too. YOU are the fanboy, coming in here and yelling at people for liking the PS3... And what's wrong with that? $600 isn't gonna kill me, I want HD movies, and I like the Playstation brand. I already have my 360, two controllers and a faceplate, and I plan on owning all three systems again this gen, just like the last two gens.
This is a videogame site for video game enthusiasts, so what gives? Your weak haterly ways only make you look silly.
Fuckin' fanboy-people can't even ARGUE correctly, even when that's all they seem to want to do!
quazz4life @ Nov 8th 2006 4:43AM
What none of you are taking into account, is that if it takes this long to load a menu, what about actual gametime? A menu is nothing, that's like taking a full minute to open a book to the table of contents. All this does is show that load times are going to be an issue for this console.
Take Resident Evil for example. if it takes 1 minute+ to load every time you go through a door, that kills the atmosphere of the game.
free ps3 @ Nov 8th 2006 5:25AM
That will be a pain if the ps3 is going to be somewhat buggy but I was pretty much assuming it would be. I got my hands on a pre order and odds are I will be selling it for a later less buggy model.
Burnt Meatloaf @ Nov 8th 2006 5:44AM
I'd be easier to determine loading times if people would actually show us the games. But, then, the Wii videos seem to be the same. Who cares about the game when we can watch a video of a Wii slurping compact discs?
Also, I was hoping that, due to the title of this thread, someone actually got the guts to take a screwdriver to this thing. I want to see what kind of heatsink Cell requires. ;)
Wulkar @ Nov 8th 2006 3:04PM
yeah its quiet but that loading up took all the video.
Sarmstrong @ Nov 8th 2006 7:05AM
He didn't let the video play to the part where it beeps when the burgers are done.
mmmike @ Nov 8th 2006 8:15AM
didn't anyone else notice the guys atrocious watch? wtf?!
looks like it used to be a hood ornament in a previous life...
killr0y @ Nov 8th 2006 8:17AM
After Gears of War, I don't think anyone really cares much about the PS3... $600 for Call of Duty with aliens? LMGDAO!
Steve @ Nov 8th 2006 8:28AM
Just like all the nintendo fans. The Wii? What the hell? Why would they come up with such a retarded name?.... Well since they aren't going to change it.... I guess it is o.k., It isn't that bad..... Wii is such a great name. OMG! Wii, Wii, Wii.
I have nothing against the Wii, but damn. Revolution was a kick ass name; just like how the ps3 is the most ugly console that had come out in the last 15 years. I just think most of you ps3 people are forcing yourselves to like it.
I will most likely never own a ps3, so I will always notice how fugly it is. But maybe you do eventually get used to it? Good luck future ps3 owners. lol.
nick @ Nov 8th 2006 8:47AM
well, it's quiet because the drive is spinning so slowly, hence the obnoxious load times.
JohnDoe @ Nov 8th 2006 9:22AM
"Also, aren't load times really in the hands of developers? Some PS2 games "stream" their levels and never load at all. And on PS3 games that "install" to the hard drive like Genji have substantially faster load times."
Well that was NBA '07, a PS2 game soo....
mac @ Nov 8th 2006 9:24AM
Brian Crecente is teh R0xx0rZ
TopaZ @ Nov 8th 2006 10:48AM
39 a.k.a. "Mongoloid." Exactly. It's E.A., not Sony, that's to blame here. Again, I point to Genji's loading time, one TENTH of NBA's.
Dan @ Nov 9th 2006 12:19PM
If you want to compare load times to the Wii, then check out http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/topics/interview/vol5/movie08.html and see the difference.
Meth @ Nov 8th 2006 11:17AM
Thanks for showing us this, Joystiq. I honestly don't care about noise; the PC I'm using right now is creating background noise but I just accept it. Loading times, on the other hand, as many have mentioned already, are downright awful. Like most people here, I have owned an original PS and a PS2 and if I'm honest I have never gotten used to the loading times in games. I still find them incredibly frustrating. If I want to play a game, I want to be entertained. I don't want to wait for anything. It's always in the back of my mind that technology is always lagging years behind the game requirements of the time. Yes, it's largely down to the game developers to minimise loading time, but it's safe to assume that very few PS3 games will be without the dreaded "Loading..." screen completely. Am I alone in this opinion? Have you guys managed to embrace loading screens over the past decade or does it still frustrate you?
lorderk @ Nov 8th 2006 12:35PM
So if your going to make a video proving that the PS3 is quiet, try getting rid of all the freakin background noise so we can hear the PS3. Sounded like a soap opera was on tv in the background. Thanks for nothing.
yubastard @ Nov 8th 2006 12:29PM
I don't know if it's the LO-FI recording but I def hear that motherfucka' whinning quite a lot! the only thing I hear is the fan... crazy fanbuoy
Papa @ Nov 9th 2006 2:47PM
That's a PS3 test kit by the way. It's meant to look very similar to the retail versions so developers/publishers can test with it.
Me @ Nov 8th 2006 2:13PM
You guys that are saying it takes several minutes to load the disk are fuckin idiots. If you would look at the damn PS3 you would see a reflection of the tv. It takes like 15 seconds tops from the time he puts the disk in, until it loads up the beginning videos. If he doesn't hit x, then the videos will just play through slowly just like on the 360. 360 loads pretty damn slow considering its drive is supposedly faster btw..i would know cuz i own one. Also, who gives a damn about Genji that is mostly going to appeal to the hack n slash audience and japanese people anyways. Just wait for the reviews of Motorstorm and Resistance.
Triforceowner @ Nov 9th 2006 5:11PM
Those loading times are unbearable, it's too funny. If the quiteness of the PS3 was mixed with the awesome game line-up of the 360 and the price of the Wii, I would buy it.
Meth @ Nov 8th 2006 5:52PM
@#47: Nice work, Detective Anonymous. However, we know it's loading because we had the sense to turn our speakers on; "It's loading... it's still loading... that light means it's accessing the hard drive.. it's still loading... *button mashing*... still loading... er, heh heh..."
