@ Socrates
"EXACTLY - that's the problem. In 5 years, the PS3 will just be hitting its stride. Sony has proven its console longevity twice now - the fact that the gamecube's shelf life was so limited, while the PS2 is throwing out some of the best games right now .Between Okami, FFXII, and Guitar Hero2...while the Xbox and Gamecube are rotting corpses, the value of that PS2 bought over half a decade ago is still going strong."

You also have to remember that XBox360 has been around for almost a year now, and that they have changed the drive of the market. Nintendo wasn't doing to well, and as a business plan, Pushed some titles to the Wii. Nintendo has also been pushing the DS really hardcore recently and has been successful with that. Sony on the other hand, RELIES on PS2. People in Europe will have to wait for the PS3, and while they wait, they have to depend on PS2 for those products. Sony put themselves in this spot, and thats their business plan. Doens't mean crap for the next gen.

So your justification for thinking trends will continue is that they are trends.

>The point is, in 5 years Nintendo will HAVE to be pushing a new console, since the Wii already looks outdated next to 360/PS3 games, even on SD TVs.<
Which doesn't matter if it's fun.

>The PS3 is designed to be providing you value long after they will have stopped making games for the Wii (this is, by the way, a big benefit of consoles that don't depend so heavily on first party games. Look at how Nintendo has held back TP on the GC just to inflate Wii sales.<
1. It's "designed" to beat the XBox 360 and whatever they thought the Rev was going to be. Sony saw all the money Microsoft could afford to piss away and overpowered their system as a defensive maneuver. As if that wasn't enough, they're trying to Trojan in Cell, Blue-Ray, and anything else they can think of.
2. Being designed 'future proof' doesn't mean it will be.
3. And?

>Sure, there are gonna be some old people and non-standard-gamers who like waving a stick more than they like finding 100 hidden packages in GTA,<

Did you just say that only old people and deviants will like the Wii? People=! hardcore gamers, as you seem to think.

All of you guys rooting for gaming to go more mainstream should stop to think for a minute about how everything that goes mainstream starts to suck.

I hope that the Wii goes mainstream so that all we lose when it does is a gimicky controller instead of the entire game industry.

I was just thinking about comparing the different console companies to races in the Lord of the Rings and heres what I came up with:

Microsoft are hobbits (halflings) : Basing their new console primarily on the Live service Microsoft is about playing together and networking with friends and neighbors. Its for the salt of the earth who like to kick back smoke some (pipe)weed and drink some pints and have some fun. Their lifestyle offers everything for a healthy mind and body with a little bit of vice thrown in for good measure.

Sony is like Rohan: They've built a bright gleaming city as a showpiece to honor themselves and show everyone how spectacular they really are. However they are over confident that their famous horsemen (MGS,FFxxx) can defend them from any threat. Still they will fight valiantly to the bitter end regardless of the outcome beacuse they feel victory is their birthright (Riiiiiiiiidge Racer!).

Nintendo is like the Elves: They live in a forest away from all the other races shrouded in mystery. They craft their world from dreams and the glories of their extremly long life, all who visit them come away impressed (demos). However weather or not Microsoft and Sony manage to throw the one ring (boring game design) into the fires of Mt.Pwn Nintendo has already packed its bags and is headed for a distant land, no longer interested in living in the world of middlearth (hardcore gamers).

That was fun wish I had more time but I gotta go to bed.

"'I like how everyone is dissing the shit out of Wii's graphics before even seeing what it is truely capable of'

I like how everyone is dissing the shit out of PS3's motion sensing before even seeing what it is truely capable of."

Wait, I thought the Wii motion sensing controller was gimmicky? Y'see, "anti-Nintendo" fanboys (not saying you) already called it gimmicky the moment Nintendo unleashed this information, but then when Sony did the same thing the same people (I'm assuming) were looking to justify it and said Sony was doing it all along.

I really wish we can isolate these people so we don't confuse the Nintendo/Sony/MS fans from the Nintendo/Sony/MS fanboys (and by fanboys and I mean the irritating, opinion flip-flopping, jerky types).

Let's be honest here. If you like the games, it wouldn't matter if the Wii's graphics are potentially just a small step up from the Xbox or if the PS3 or 360 are just "the same game with better graphics." You people should just respect each other and tell stories of great gaming experiences instead of playing the same bullshit games some politicians do to each other. This is suppose to be for fun, like sports. Don't twist it as some idiotic "war." There is no war.

crono141 says (Msg #17):
[[17. from the article:

"For Sony, there's only one downside: Lair made me even more excited to get my hands on a Nintendo Wii."

NintendOWNED!]]

Don't you just love it, crono141?
Wii owns, OWNS, is the SOLE PROPIETOR of the 7th Generation of Consoles.

From 2006 to 2011 it ain't gonna be NOTHING but Wii and no OTHER BUT the Wii.

Congratulations, Nintendo.
You've done it. And the pretenders to the throne will finally succumb.
We'll let Microsoft pick up the crumbs.
Competition is important after all.

9 excruciating days before the FUTURE OF GAMING commences.
Maybe I should freeze myself like Cartman...

Never underestimate the little engine that could.

I think hipster is the wrong term.

I think elitist fits better. I think your cool because you like something the "common masses" aren't interested in. As soon as the "common masses" catch on to liking it too, you start to hate it.

Anime in america is a classic object of elitism. In the mid 90's only the geeks knew about it, and now that everybody loves it, all the geeks think its lame (or the elitists ones do, at least. Lots of them)

Just for the record I ALWAYS hated anime. I don't much like animated films in any form, not just anime. Animation is great in games beacuse there is no alternative, and yes some animated films I have appriciated, I just tend to avoid animated movies unless something really special comes out.

The worst offence of all however is hiring real actors and then processing the film to look like its animated. Like the squiggle vision in A scanner Darkly, the story sounded interesting but I just couldn't get past the idea of the processing enough to bother seeing it.

But what I guess your saying is I only like things when most people dont like them, which is perverting my original comment.

And let me defend the 'elitiests' you talk about as well. Most people that get into something (whatever it is) when the scene is small have many similar interests and are generally enjoying it beacuse they are of a similar mindset. When something gets big beacuse it appeals to so many different people on different levels the sense of community starts to dissappear, people often debate about the true nature of the thing to begin with. So if you identify with something beacuse you found people of similar mindset and then all the sudden there are people there for different reasons than you, perhaps you discover that what you loved originally no longer exists. money doesn't help either, Exploiting something thats niche always causes its appeal to dwindle with the original audience.

Im babbling but think about this, how many bands have you heard where their best album is their first album? Lots I'm sure, most likely for several reasons, A) They had more time to create their music for the first album. B) They had no criticism outside the intial group prior to putting out the album. C) They weren't trying to meet expectations of a wider audience. D) They weren't as greedy, they didn't have any money at this point so anything would have been better than nothing and they were happy to strive for that.

Anyways I'm running on and on and probably not making much sense, I'm just trying to explain why I think that the more mainstream something gets the more watered down and sucky it becomes. It has nothing to do with being elitest and everything to do with the original concept no longer being the same, or no longer identifying with it anymore since its changed.
