When PlayStation 3 launches on Saturday in Japan, the first firmware upgrade (v1.10) will be available to anyone lucky enough to score a unit. The update will add support for PlayStation Network.Later this month (post launch) PSP will receive a similar update (firmware v3.00), also enabling PlayStation Network functionality. In addition, with both devices upgraded, "Remote Play" will be possible, allowing users to access content stored on PS3 via PSP.

My first first! This is good news for me. So when I finally do get a PS3, my PSP will do something since Daxter.
Yay
foodgoes @ Nov 9th 2006 2:34PM
Soooo….how do you get the firmware to “add” (not update) support for PlayStation Network.
HA ha nice one Sony. (As nelson from the Simpsons would say)
Draco @ Nov 9th 2006 2:37PM
Thats good news, I hoped that they wouldnt have finalized the PSN a few months ago, every minute extra development is making the service stronger.
I assume though it just enhances the network and not create it, or it could be difficult connecting without the option to connect :P
The Intangible Fact @ Nov 9th 2006 2:40PM
Now all they need is good games! Good Luck Sony Fans. It might be a year before you get high quality titles like the 360. But I still want a PS3 for braggin rights.
riskbreaker @ Nov 9th 2006 2:59PM
the update comes on the games disk just like the psp
Michael May @ Nov 9th 2006 3:15PM
Haha. Patched before launch. Why am I not surprised?
Aex @ Nov 9th 2006 3:31PM
I still wanna know if I can connect my psp to the $500 ps3 or not. Are they going to be doing a direct connection or using the lan I have set up for it o.o

Is it a good thing that Sony can patch, update, and generally tweak the PSN to fulfill its potential.
However, seeing that Sony is patching their console to "add support for PlayStation Network" shows that the box was not designed around the PSN. I think that was one of the struggles that MS faced with the original Xbox.
But now, the 360 is designed around the robust service that is Xbox Live and as a result (IMO) the console itself grows better everyday.
So, for me, this underscores Sony's inability to see that online gaming and the online community should be at the *heart* of their platform, not off to the side. And this is coming from someone that doesn't play online that much overall.

Hey, Michael. When I got back home on November 22nd 2005, from Zero Hour, hooked up my Xbox 360 and turned it on, the very first thing that happened was a dashboard update was applied.
SupaDave @ Nov 9th 2006 3:51PM
I don't see this as a big deal, or as there being problems with the PS3 and/or it's network. Unless we see details that show the Playstation Network is the equivalent of CoD2 on the 360, we have nothing to worry about.
caselogic @ Nov 9th 2006 3:57PM
Launch day update is pretty common these days. Would you rather them delay the system?
I worked on Lord of the Rings 2, and Battlefield Special forces they both had patches on the first day.

Hey look... it's the mythical GT4 Mobile for PSP. I would like to thank Sony and Polyphony Digital for promising that for the launch of the PSP and not delivering for a year and a half... and not saying much about it at all.
wonder if these updates will brick some ps3's like the 360 updates seem to with the 360. that'd be a welcome surprise for one of the few lucky enough to get their paws on one of these this holiday season!

Ok this statement adds absolutely no sense and contradicts what your trying to pose as a negative statement agaisnt the ps3. Then that means that the 360 wasnt BUILT around 1080p support so it's 1080p is really weak because it came to the 360 via a *GASP* PATCH. Lots of options to LIVE were not included before *GASP AGAIN* a FUCKING PATCH!!

So, whos gonna be the first to have a power cut whilst updating? Bricked $500 console ftw.
Of course thats a joke, if anyone calls me out on some kind of lack of technical knowledge and flames me I WILL hunt you down via IP and hurt you.
:p
Contra666 @ Nov 9th 2006 6:33PM
Jojo it makes perfect sense.
The PS2's biggest problem was that online play literally "screwed on the back" of the console.
Both the Xbox and Xbox 360 were made for a broadband-only online service.
Sure there will be updates, It's much better to make an update available than delay something - but to add in what is quite frankly a HUGE part of the system is different to Microsoft adding small features and fixes a year after the console is out.
Btman @ Nov 9th 2006 6:40PM
Typo? But you have PS3 firmware upgraded to 1.1 in the title... and then you say the first firmware upgrade is(v1.10)
RAMX @ Nov 9th 2006 6:48PM
it's not like they are rushing the network code at the last second like some of you seem to think (get a brain morans) they are synching the clients up to the latest version and "unlocking" them. alot of ps3s are already in the hands of the media and whatnot, they didn't want those people messing around on their network service before it was open to the public.
i think firmware updates will be quite frequent for the ps3 because a lot of network things are very much implementable but wont be ready at the same time.

Exactly.
chudgoo @ Nov 9th 2006 7:07PM
If the PSP has taught us anything, it would probably be wise to NOT update when given the opportunity.
These updates are always in Sony's interest and rarely in yours. (The PSP firmware updates added little in terms of new features and took away *so* much more.
Could it be that the PS3's firmware version on newly shipped units has severe vulnerabilities? ...that could possibly allow for massive damage? (to the bottom line, that is) ;) (IOW, hackable)
Konchu @ Nov 9th 2006 7:32PM
It isnt abnormal to have patches like these come out out launch. Many games do it Gears of War just did for me and I remember the dash board update when the system came out. They are always going to find little tweaks they can do to make it better.
I will not say this does not concern me though as Sony has stated time and time again its commitiment to a online experience. So if I am reading this right then it makes me feel Sony's network stuff is rushed and I hope that is not the case. I would shrug this off more if games like Tony Hawk Project 8 and Virtua Tennis 3 had not had their network play stripped from the PS3 versions.
DakidOG @ Nov 9th 2006 8:09PM
@6 Why your laughing I don't know. The way the 360 gets patched you should just shutup.

Hmmm i guess adding 1080 support wasnt aHUGE part of the system huh? or "patching" and "updating" backwards compatability ISNT a HUGE part of the 360 huh? and those are 'small' features?? quit being a hypocrit and go back to licking Bill Gates' balls
WiiStation3-60 here:) so no im no fanboi!!
ElDom @ Nov 9th 2006 9:12PM
