Japan lines up for PS3 (look at the size of that crowd)
Only 80,000 PS3 units were ready by launch in Japan, which means a good number of those seen in the video went home with yen in their wallet and tears in their eye.

You got a number wrong. Japan had 100,000 units not 80,000. Please check up on this stuff before posting :D
The IT Plus article confirms a 100,000 launch day shipment figure for the PS3 with a million expected in Japanese retail chains by the end of 2006. This is in contrast to recent reports suggesting that Sony would miss its launch targets by 20,000, leaving just 80,000 units to go around.

Damn, now thats a lot of people.
Foetoid @ Nov 10th 2006 10:49PM
I wonder how many of those 80,000 were faulty. With the 360 overheating issues, and the ps3's more powerful cpu, i wonder wot the percentage of machines have been sent back with overheating issues. 80,000 units? What is Sony thinking? I bet 10% of all the people who got one of those ebay'd it, and another 10% got robbed on the way home.
Ethan @ Nov 10th 2006 10:51PM
Here are three that I found on youtube. Those Japanese people sure love their PS3s. Of course I would be in one of those lines too if I were in Japan.

I bet at least one of those "lucky customers" won't be lucky when they get robbed on the subway going back home.

360 will die, haha. All you Xbox fanboy Bit#hes can shut the f%ck up about ps3 failing now. When it all comes down, the winner is the one that sell the most units WORLDWIDE 360 is considered a piece of Sh1t anywhere else but in america.Look at the sales over half of those 6 million units were sold in america. No one in europe or japan cares about the crapbox 360. ha ha ha ha ha.

f*cking idiots, all of them, clustering together like that. Like watching cattle stupidly being herded into a slaughter-house. i couldn't help but laugh a little.
Adult Swim is getting it's own channel! Awesome!

Geez, at least they're allocating more PS3's for the US than they did for Japan. There will be people lining up for days before our launch next week. Heck, we have yoyo's who line up the night before for day after Thanksgiving sales just so they can get a laptop for $50 off at 6am when Circuit City opens.

Yea, because the very idea of crime is centralized entirely within the United States, and is totally unknown in respectful countries such as Japan, where no crime occurs...ever.
theburn16 @ Nov 10th 2006 11:48PM
that's more people than have bought a 360 in an entire year in japan lol
automatic @ Nov 10th 2006 11:54PM
12:
The US in 1989 had 230 robberies per 100,000 people. Japan had around 1.3 per 100,000 people. Now, could someone get robbed for their PS3 in Japan? Of course. But if I were a betting man...
Paco From Del Taco @ Nov 10th 2006 11:54PM
Microsoft, thats how a launch is japan is supposed to be. Phear it.
Negativecool @ Nov 11th 2006 12:04AM
automatic-
Gotta love those figures from '89...I mean, they tell all about facts 17 years later...
Besides, my statement was not to point out that Japan is crimeless. Anyone with a brain knows that there is more crime in New York than Japan. I merely eluded to the fact that with ALL those people in the PS3 raffle…maybe one of them is a little disgruntled…maybe one of them wants to get his hands on one just a little more than most, maybe…just maybe, there is one person in that crowd that would ROB you to get it.
Besides, ElChino’s statement was more of a rhetorical situational joke…laugh!

#7, Does it really bring you that much pleasure to see a system sell out, and for 360 to die? Wow, I'd hate to be you.
#13, The 360 has sold well more than 80,000 units in Japan so you can stop celebrating. Do some research before posting.
Fish @ Nov 11th 2006 12:16AM
Funny how they're rushing it... they'd've been better off waiting till spring when they have something to sell than rushing it all off right now... honestly, what do they expect to sell for the PS3 all Christmas now that they're pretty much out of stock all over Japan, pictures of it?

Kind of ironic that the PS3 launch looks like a scene from Dead Rising.

80,000 was the last official estimate, and that hasn't been changed (officially) since then, so there's no reason to get all up in their face about it.

PS3 will never be able to lead worldwide marketshare. Just aint gonna happen! The truth hurts for fanboys so stop being Sony's bitch and just accept it: you'll be better off mentally.
otakucode @ Nov 11th 2006 4:10PM
And this, boys and girls, is why Sony knew they could starve Japan of units.
xbox360dspsp @ Nov 11th 2006 9:18AM
Finding a 360 last year was an incredibly frustrating experience. Anyone who thinks that limited availability is a "good thing" is on crack. It's beyond annoying when you've got cash on hand and can't buy the console that you and your kids desire.
Why didn't I pre-order the 360? Of course, I pre-ordered in SPRING of 2005, but EB Games told me that they wouldn't be able to satisfy the pre-order until Feb 2006. Nuts. Btw: They finally called in MARCH 06! I didn't even bother with the PS3 pre-order this time around.
Despite Sony's promises, we're looking a repeat of the 360 availability fiasco. As someone who happens to be "Santa" for our household, there's no way that I'm going to repeat last year's experience.
I imagine Microsoft will sell a bunch of 360s to equally frustrated Santas. If, as a Santa, you find yourself in that boat, toss in a copy of Gears of War for the big kids or Viva Pinata for the little ones. Both are awesome.
Oh, and for all you smacktalkers. Santa owns you b#%ches.
P.S. I have my Wii pre-ordered at NintendoWorld. I'm reasonably confident "Santa" will have secured one on launch day.

6 days left...good luck on finding one guys.

Taken from http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/061110/japan_playstation_3.html?.v=15
"Ken Kutaragi, the head of Sony's game unit known as the "father of the PlayStation," said he was thrilled by the reception to the PS3.
"I am so happy so many people are waiting," he said in an informal countdown ceremony at Bic Camera. "Thank you for waiting from late last night. Please enjoy next-generation entertainment."
Only five games were on sale for the PS3's Japan launch date."
BMWM3P @ Nov 11th 2006 10:23AM
If they would have made 10 million for launch in japan they would've sold out as well. 360 is as good as dead, expect the same type of enthusiasm for the PS3 here, Europe and anywhere they launch.
That ms bithces is the power of Playstation.
