Legend of Zelda video retrospective (part 5)
28
The second to last installment of Game Trailers Zelda video retrospective has hit the intertubes, just 8 days until the next adventure begins on Wii. This episode covers two of our favs: the (once) controversial Wind Waker and and tea-cup sized Minish Cap, the most recent titles. Nerd out for the fifth time, friends of Link. The last episode, part six, hits next week following the lineage of all the games.

I hate to be a big nitpicky fanboy...but the Ps2 and Xbox were out LONG before we saw our first glimpse of Wind Waker...

I'm with superbagman on this one. The PS2 came out in 2000, and Wind Waker wasn't revealed to the public until Nintendo Space World 2001. The Xbox was closer to release at that time, but the PS2 had definitely been out for a little over a year.
That aside, the Zelda Retrospective video series has been pretty good.

It's surprising how much praise is now given to WindWaker. You couldn't go into a review when it first came out with "WindWaker is great, but..." Because every single person WANTED that Zelda tech demo from 2000. And this cel-shaded Link was only hurting kiddie-image Nintendo, blah blah blah. But still, people picked it up and now it's considered a classic. I guess hindsight is 20/20, eh?

Well, after the shock of the graphical style wore off, a solid, carefully crafted game was shown under the surface. If it was longer and a bit harder, it would probably have stood on equal footing with Ocarina of Time

I loved Wind Waker a lot, even tho I didn't want too in the beginning. but after playing it for about 5 minutes, I was hooked. The end of the game made me quite sad, it was sad to see Hyrule and the King get drowned. I remember when I first got that golden NES cartridge years ago, and I got goosebumps. Zelda continues to be one of the best continuing video games ever.

dude wtf a gamecube emulator, you are going to need a supercomputer and a way to get pass the disc protection. Why dont you just get a gamecube off ebay for 40 bux. instead of being a cheap bitch.

Dude, just buy a Wii next week and a copy of Wind Waker.
Sheesh..
Anyhow, I actually thought Wind Waker was the best Zelda game over all, from a game play standpoint. It wasn't as epic as Ocarina of Time or A Link to the Past, though, so in that sense is wasn't as good to a lot of people (myself included).
And it's actually those game play mechanics that are making me strongly consider waiting for the GC version of Twilight Princess since, as I understand it, Link auto-blocks with his shield and you can't control the camera.
That said, Wind Waker is the ONLY game to every elicit some kind of emotional reaction from me (ha- other than controller throwing frustration). When you first enter Hyrule castle for the first time and everything is frozen in time, TELL me it doesn't send a shiver up your spine. Easily one of, if not THE, best moments in video game history, in my opinion.

i actually dont mind the cell shading. it was something different and really did look beautiful at times.
but what i didnt like was the character models. why did they have to be THAT cartoony?
why did link have to have short stubby little legs? and why did his head have to be so big. THATS my problem.

I found an error in this episode.
WW was NOT the first game to employ stealth. Remember back to the Gerudo Fortress in OoC, you had to sneak past guards, or else you'd be thrown in jail.

I thought WW was beautiful in art and incredibly fun and detailed. I think I liked it better than Ocarina of Time -- I couldn't put WW down.

Someone should do something about the spoilers. I was lucky to have played WW beforehand, but those who didn't like it before (like me) might have wanted to play it later.
BTW, am I the only one who felt sad (again) when Link departed with the King in WW?

I give props to Gametrailers as a Nintendo propaganda machine. Before the retrospective, I just chalked OoT memories up to nostalgia and had written off the Wii as gimmicky. After watching all of the retrospectives, I tracked down Minish Cap used at EB and will probably buy the Wii solely to get OoT again and play Wind Waker (sold my cube a while ago and never bought WW). I don't care about Wiimotes or anything, I just want to play all the Zelda games again.

Yeah, a spoiler warning would heve been nice. I've never played wind waker, but since I'm planning on getting Phantom Hourglass, I was going to play WW to get up to speed with the story. But now, I KNOW what happened...*sigh* should I still bother to play WW or not?
PS: This is a stupid question, but, how do I use the password thingy to avoid having to go to my e-mail to activate comments? Please help. >.

OMG... I forgot how beautiful Wind Waker was. In fact, I think even after a generation of consoles have gone by, we'll be able to look at Wind Waker and say it was beautiful. Wow. Makes me want to play through it again (and somehow avoid the fetch quests).

The video went far too in depth about the plot IMO. Some of the story revelations really did send chills down my spine as I played WW. My experience with WW is on par with that of OoT, I urge you to play them both if you haven't!
Please put spoiler warnings up already!

DiahrreaMan... Couldn't you have come up with a better name? Anyway, the password is an artifact of the system being used at Engadget, and isn't implemented here. At least not in any form I'm aware of.
The oot retrospective was more enjoyable I think, but this one was pretty good. The whole retrospective series has been great, I hope GV keeps this kind of stuff up.
I'm just not terribly impressed with the huge size of WW's world, and the draw distances, when they could have cut the distance between islands by an order of magnitude without greatly affecting gameplay. So much water...
I think anti-spoiler rights get voided after 2 years or so. It probably was not entirely necessary to the retrospective though. *shrug*

Yet another cool Legend of Zelda Retrospective video. Part 5 was enjoyable with Wind Waker and The Minish Cap. I think that the conclusion next week will be interesting. I hope that they'll have a future segment for the upcoming Nintendo blockbuster: Twilight Princess.
