Playing Nintendo's Donkey Kong on Sony's PS3
27
Since Nintendo's Virtual Console service isn't live, we decided to do the next best thing: fire up a Flash version of Donkey Kong inside the PlayStation 3's web browser. Sites like everyvideogame.com require Java, so we had to settle for a Flash implementation. Even though the PS3 browser's Flash implementation churns though YouTube video like butter, it has some difficulty with most of the web games we tried. Take this version of Donkey Kong, where our poor Jumpman has managed to get himself stuck in the first ten seconds of gameplay. We'll wait for the VC version, thanks.

Wow.
You guys have a PS3, a Wii, and a 360 with an HD-DVD drive, and what do you do?
You take the console that is supposed to be the "true" next gen, and you play a NINTENDO game on the browser.
Oh, the irony.

I think it needs to be pointed out that this is probably a problem with the game and not the PS3. (As a Nintendo Fan-Boy I can't believe I just said that).

It's likely that Daniel is right. Could you guys try this again with something like Bejeweled or Zuma, or link us to the flash game so we can see a comparison.
Although, since the ps3 doesn't support java, it makes sense that flash games run like crap while flash movies are just fine...i doubt youtube movies have a single line of actionscript

Why would anyone ever want to play Donkey Kong?
I got bored of it about... 25 years ago after spending far too many 10p pieces on it.
Your better off playing chuckie egg.
Some games are best left in the past.

I foresee websites popping up in the future for flash games compatible with the PS3 browser.
.. and hopefully one day Java.
(I mean the PS3 doesn't connect up with the PSP out of the box.. so I'd imagine lots of functionality will only come later with updates.)

Who the hell cares of using a web browser through a game machine. Anyone knows who is into web editing that if its not a FULL TIME computer it wont work as good. ASK WEB TV THAT?. Yes it read a few sites and email but for 100% compatibility for every type of language on the web its all about computers.

It's funny that the most enjoyable parts of Sony's two latest offerings are their abilities to play emulated Nintendo games.

yeah but its also linux.... so prob not so much of a problem as you think. although wether its enough of an implentation of full linux to get the security benefits is arguable

If you're using noscript, you have to allow netscape.com. *rolls eyes at stupid internet trends and every site having its own bizarre flash video player that needs java for no good reason*

That was so freaking funny, "As you can see, this [Mario gets stuck] is much better than playing a $5 download."

Flash9 for linux is out...works flawlessly for the most part. But the netscape video seemed really choppy. (linux comp not ps3)

Okay, somebody's definitely too proud of his new subwoofer.
Good bass can be pleasant and immersive, but when it's up so loud it's completely noticeable all the time, it kind of detracts from the rest of the experience.

Behold the almighty power of the Cell Processor! LOL, pretty funny video, but it's a cool concept. Donkey Kong should stay on Wii, no offense PS3.

Can't wait for the Wii's browser for the same rerason as this - I'm a Flash artist myself, so this will be fun.
