Upon setting up the Wii, our first goal was to establish Internet access and
download a ton of VC games check out the WIiConnect 24 service. Problem is, Nintendo hasn't turned on their servers yet, so while our Wii can find an access point, it can't connect to Nintendo and download the update already available for it. So, the next best thing is checking out some of the functionality of the console and this is where the video, embedded into the post after the break, comes in. Watch as
Kyle Orland and myself check out how to post messages onto the Wii.

So, can we rename Joystiq to WiiFanboy?
Simon @ Nov 11th 2006 11:45AM
That looks exceptionally slick on your monitor. How did you go about connecting it up to get the best results?
FinalDelerium @ Nov 11th 2006 11:45AM
@ Kumar Shah
They have a wii. its a game console. It's a video game blog. People who want to know about video games, including but not limited to the wii, come to the blog to read news about video games. This is video game news.
I could make an attempt at dumbing it down further, but i dont have the requisite tools for a full frontal lobotomy.
Optimus Prime @ Nov 11th 2006 11:46AM
Since Wii hasnt officially launched yet, dont expect any online service. Although, IGN was able to play RFOM (9.1) with 40 player multiplayer.
And, where is that OPERA browser they promised? Where is it? It should be amusing browsing in 480p upscaled up to that hi rez LCD monitor.
LRV @ Nov 11th 2006 11:49AM
Does anyone actually think they would use this feature?Watching the video made me yearn for a Post-It Note. Might make sense on something portable like a DS, but it's useless on the Wii.
The Man @ Nov 11th 2006 11:57AM
I'll buy a wii when Mario Galaxy is out.
TwilightKnight @ Nov 11th 2006 11:58AM
YAY! I was hoping that the Wii was capable to connecting to a monitor. I have that exact same monitor as well, which is very good news.
Tell us how Joystiq!

FinalDelerium i was thinking about what to get you for christmas but its clear what you need the most is a sense of humour
Cutty @ Nov 11th 2006 12:19PM
That looks like a cool little feature that will be fun to mess around with. Leaving insults? Definitely. =D
Why is there what sounds like a Metal Gear Codec ring about 55 seconds into the video? It sounds like it, anyway.
Fernando @ Nov 11th 2006 12:19PM
Hi... what are the chances that someday the Wii can handle a game engine like Unreal 3 (Gears of War). I mean, the X-Box 360 release a game with that engine after 1 year, so maybe the Wii can also handle an engine like that in 1 year (I mean, Red Steel is a first generation Wii game and looks like a first generation X-Box 360 game)
Jay @ Nov 11th 2006 12:29PM
I have that exact same monitor and am also wondering how you connected the Wii to it.
J.T. Fox @ Nov 11th 2006 12:29PM
Is it just me or did I hear a Codec in the background? This might be a hunch but maybe I'm not the only one to use Adium's Metal Gear Solid sound pack. (Adium is a Mac chat client like Gaim and Trillian.) I dunno, kind of a funny find for me personally since I use the same sound.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Wii lust.

Okay. I just HAVE to ask you: How many threads do you intend to spam today? Do I really need to point out the bitter irony of a SONY fanboy asking "They promised it! Where is it? Huh? You SUCK!"?
Sony promised the PS3 would ring in the "HD era." That was a bold statement, but acceptable corporate crap. Since then, however, they have stated the PS3 will "support 57 players on the same screen with FREE online service. It will also cook toast, make the bed, do your dishes, AND get you a woman." It's too bad you bought into that last one so much....
But anyway, of all the companies that have made promises, Sony has proven themselves to be a corporation founded on and expanded on nothing but pure vapor-ware and lies. Before this new generation of consoles, I have never seen such stupid people. And that's just my honest feelings on it. If I were buying a car, and I walked onto the car lot and the sales rep told me, "You're buying this car. It's overpriced, it has no features, and comes in two models: With or without wheels. You're going to buy it because our name is on it and we said so. You are an idiot who is incapable of making your own decisions. We don't feel privileged that you chose to shop here at all because we KNEW you would. You simply can't go to any other lot because we are the shit. That's all there is to it.", I would go elsewhere and laugh in their face. But somehow, someway, you guys get told that the company you support doesn't want your support, they don't like you, they'll sell their products because their name is on it, and you can shut the (expletive deleted) up and take it in the face, and STILL, you line up to pay $600 for a big black piece of plastic packed full of unproven technology and built on lies and deceipt. I don't understand it at all. There are multiple options open for a similar game experience without the cash expense. However, I guess some people just LOVE Sony's logo.
Get a clue.
LRV @ Nov 11th 2006 12:34PM
@ Cutty:
Insults never occured to me. I salute you sir!
Josh @ Nov 11th 2006 12:36PM
How you guys have it set up on that monitor makes the image get stretched a little vertically, since the aspect ratio of that monitor is 16:10, while you are running the Wii at 16:9. Isn't there an option to put small black bars on the top and bottom? I don't know about you, but that kind of thing just bothers me...
pirahna1 @ Nov 11th 2006 12:44PM
That codec sounded like a cellphone ringtone to me, I think I heard the person say hello afterwards.
I found this (http://www.unangelic.org/stupidlogic/2005/10/metal-gear-solid-codec-ringtone.html)
the one in the video sounds a little lower in pitch, but that could be due to the movie format.
Murdoink @ Nov 11th 2006 12:45PM
I think I heard the codec sound from MGS on the video, weird
The Ineffable Jut @ Nov 11th 2006 12:50PM
I have that exact ringtone! It's the greatest ringtone ever. It makes me answer the phone in a gravely and gutteral "Colonel, I'm inside the building."
Jeff @ Nov 11th 2006 12:55PM
Have you tried using a USB keyboard to type message yet???
Jad Rida @ Nov 11th 2006 12:57PM
What kind of monitor is this Dell? Is it the 24 inch Ultrasharp? Have u conneceted the Wii via Composite or Component?
Cirrus @ Nov 11th 2006 1:32PM
Snake? SNAAAKE!!!!!
SyChO @ Nov 11th 2006 1:43PM
We all want to know about the damn monitor! Help us out please!!! I have the 20.1 inch.
BTW: Can anyone tell me were the sound will be coming from? Where exactly do we plug it?
Thanks
Mr. Khan @ Nov 11th 2006 1:56PM
I would be more interested to know if, rather than USB keyboards (i think the USB slots are for Network Use only) you can use BlueTooth Keyboards (those kick ass)
Kyle Mistry @ Nov 11th 2006 1:58PM
About the monitor connectivity, it's most likely with the composite cables that come with the Wii. I've got the Dell 240WPwhatever, and if I'm not mistaken, that's the monitor used in this video.
There are composite (and component) ports on the back which you can use to hook up the Wii to. This will only work with the video composite cable (yellow), you'll need to find some audio output source to plug the audio cables (white and red) into.
thatbox @ Nov 11th 2006 2:16PM
That monitor has a component input, if it's the 2405FPW or 2407FPW, so there's how right there, most likely.
CartoonBeaver @ Nov 11th 2006 3:50PM
Can you hook up a keyboard to the USB port in the back of the Wii to type messages?
Walt's Ghost @ Nov 11th 2006 4:06PM
How about connecting a USB flashdrive, USB HD, and a 4GB SD Card while you're at it too. Show us something we can't find on IGN...
DG @ Nov 11th 2006 6:41PM
"Myself" is a reflexive pronoun. You meant to write "Watch as Kyle and I..."
English is awesome if you know it.
s256 @ Nov 11th 2006 7:11PM
4GB SD cards are "SDHC" format, a different architecture from the older SD standard. They aren't cross-compatible.
The Wii will only support regular SD cards, which go up to 2GB.
Ryura @ Nov 11th 2006 7:49PM

The Opera Browser is downloaded off the Wii Shop Channel, but since the servers aren't up you can't get it yet.
