Twilight Princess Diary: Part 1 [update 1]

It's currently 1:45 AM eastern time, and I'm here in Philly with Joystiq's Vlad Cole (currently asleep) and Chris Grant and Nintendo Wii Fanboy's David Hinkle, blazing through The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as quick as our tired little hands will let us. We'll have fuller impressions when we're done, but for now we thought we'd share some of the random quotes and ideas that have been flying around the room as we play. We'll do our best to explain the context behind each entry, but for some of these, you probably just had to be there...
*WARNING: Some minor plot spoilers ahead*
11:45PM: While herding goats into a barn with Epona, the incredibly Engrish message "Goat In!" appears on screen. This is currently tied with Mario Sunshine's "Shine Get" for weirdest translation in a recent Nintendo-produced game.
12:00AM: Chris' inability to catch fish draws derisive taunts from Vlad. "You're obviously not a fisherman," he jibes.
12:15AM: Add another contender to the Nintendo Engrish contest -- when Chris finally hooks a fish, the game triumphantly tells him "Fish On!" (Update 1: Apparently "Fish On!" is a common fishing term and I am a total idiot. Please ignore this note)
12:30AM: Were we dreaming, or did repeatedly hitting a chicken with the wooden sword let us control the chicken for a few seconds? Maybe we should get some sleep...
12:45AM: Upon being freed from a cage with a shrieking monkey, a child is thankful that they both weren't eaten by roving monsters. Personally, we think she should be thankful that the monkey didn't eat her.
12:55AM: Kyle: *After Dave gives away the wooden sword to a local child* "I bet that's the only sword you'll get for the whole game. You now have to go through the game swordless!"
Dave: "That's OK, I'll just have to punch my way to victory!"
1:25AM: Dave: *After falling off a bridge for the third straight time in a battle with some bats* "I'm a master at that."

Quick! Fix your formatting!
And Engrish is awesome, I don't even know what you are talking about. Also, you guys are lucky bastards. Have fun.
hoop @ Nov 11th 2006 2:42AM
Keep going guys! You've got another 48 hours this weekend, and I'm fairly certain that, with the aid of caffeinated stimulants, you can all slog your way through half the game. I envy you, lads. Keep us informed.
Rock on and "Zelda Up!"
James @ Nov 11th 2006 3:00AM
"Fish on!" is not Engrish you racist bastards! It's a common fishing term when you're fishing with a group of people. You're letting others know that you have a "fish on" the hook and everyone should keep out of your way so you don't tangle your line with others and lose the fish in the process. Please stop assuming terms are Engrish just because you don't understand where they originated.
TheThirdStrongest @ Nov 11th 2006 3:28AM
Hey did anybody get that new Flavor Flav album? It's awesome!

I stopped reading at "*WARNING: Some minor plot spoilers ahead*". Comments will still be enabled once I get my non-preordered, non-launch Wii and beat LoZ:TP, right?
Epsilon @ Nov 11th 2006 3:46AM
I can see it now: "Heart Get!" "Sword Get!" "Girl Free!"*

I want, I want! Can a fellow Whartonite come by and get in on the Wii action? Nov. 19th could not come soon enough...
Tom @ Nov 11th 2006 4:00AM
This is nothing new. This will be the fourth game this year in which I press A + B + *Swing Controller wildly* to IN a GOAT... or did I GOAT andIN? I GOATed something... point is, this time it's a Wiimote, not a PS2 controller, that I'm swinging around, and in terms of gameplay that makes all difference in the Goat, I mean World. Thank you.
Quazyqual @ Nov 11th 2006 4:26AM
Gahd damn am I having serious envy issues right now. Lucky bastards. Cheers.
Kurisu @ Nov 11th 2006 4:41AM
Fish on is the correct english.
ramuji @ Nov 11th 2006 4:53AM
Felt a pang late one afternoon
I was fishin' off Muir Beach
With Larry LaLonde
Grabbed a tuna salad sandwich
And I started to chew
Pretty soon Ler's yellin'
"Fish on, fish on."

Les would be proud of you for using that quote in this scenario. ;)

Ah, the pitfalls of comedy blogging.
Phil B @ Nov 11th 2006 6:28AM
"Fish On" is very common to say in the midwest, thats not engrish.
This games sounds like its a ton of fun.
Maxwell @ Nov 11th 2006 9:15AM
Did your dad catch a hundred-pound sturgeon on twenty-pound test, by chance? Were you so dang impressed you had to write this song?
FuzzyPickles @ Nov 11th 2006 6:38AM
Hell yeah for Primus. And anyone that thinks fish on is engrish... visit the nearest lake or ocean get your ass informed.
jgrey @ Nov 11th 2006 6:48AM
"Please stop assuming terms are Engrish just because you don't understand where they originated."
James, I agree with all you said, but you should also stop assuming that he's a "racist bastard" just because he said something is Engrish.
Some people are so quick to jump on the you-are-racist bandwagon when they see something they don't like. Boggles my mind.
Merus @ Nov 11th 2006 7:18AM
Goat in, though, we all agree that's totally Engrish?
Moogle @ Nov 11th 2006 8:38AM
I dunno Merus, can you think of a better way to say "you got a goat in" in as few words as possible?
I suppose they could have said "1 goat in!" "2 goats in!" ... But it's unnecessary. The text works just fine.
VerdigriS @ Nov 11th 2006 9:18AM
Some anchor on Fox & Friends (time of this post) was reporting on the launch of the PS3 in Japan. And then went on to say that the PCS3 will launch next week with 400,000 units...
PCS3? So it really is a computer! heh heh
B @ Nov 11th 2006 9:19AM
Best use of Engrish:Zero Wing.
VerdigriS @ Nov 11th 2006 9:23AM
crap... didn't mean to sound like a troll... that above comment was meant to go in the PS3 topic above this one :(
Monkiavelli @ Nov 11th 2006 1:15PM
I'd also like to note that "Goat In!" is a pretty common exclamation in goatherding. It's what you yell when you've been trying to get a goat into something (a barn, a box, a sweater, etc.) and you succeed, so that the other goatherders know that the goat is currently in, rather than, for example, out.
It's obvious that none of you spend a lot of time among goats and those that herd them.
Grant @ Nov 11th 2006 3:25PM
jesus,
the ignorance towards goat herding is remarkable.
how could you NOT know that term?
and fishing?
god, you must NOT be a country bumpkin hick or something.
Bebop And Rocksteady @ Nov 11th 2006 5:57PM
HOLY CRAP!
Monkiavelli and Grant are simply halarious!!!
havaska @ Nov 11th 2006 6:22PM
Goat In is a pun of 'get in', a term commonly used in Britain to describe when something good has been achieved.
jelisa_j @ Nov 19th 2006 8:28AM
We are currently trying to get the Wii ordered online via Circut City, all 5 nephews rather get that to share for Christmas that loads of presents. *G* I can't wait to play this game with them!
side note: My family raised goats, and though we never used the term "Goat In" specifically, rather "The goats are in." that shortening seems rather reasonable. They were welled trained goats, for the most part living weed eaters and pets.
night chall! ;)

Fefe @ Nov 20th 2006 5:46PM
You are so lucky! I got Twighlight Princess and Wii controlers but no Wii. I lined up for it but didnt get one because some people cut. So I have the game but no consol....
Apollo @ Nov 19th 2006 2:22PM
Hey, I have an idea! Why don't we start talking about the game and not some irrelevant cynical jargon.
I'm sure that this game is f***ing awesome, I wanna hear more about it.
*Question(Anyone that now owns a Wii): Is the wireless control really as cool as it sounds?
JAKE klingelhofer @ Nov 20th 2006 7:29PM
give me money please
Jessica @ Nov 19th 2006 4:00PM
dont worry guys if it was me reading those things i would have just thought they were horrid translations as well considering they are in almost every game or maybe its just because I am a girl or umm the fact that most gamers dont know terms for goat herding and fishing we know gamer terms could just be me
El Guapo @ Nov 26th 2006 12:33PM
moo. I wish I could be playing the new Zelda game...but anyway who cares if 'Fish On' is English or Engrish. It's funny either way.
-I still think Shine Get is funny, but not sure if Goat In is funnier. Perhaps the Goat one only because Goats are flippin hillarious
and boo ya to anyone who thinks I'm racist against goats.
marcy @ Nov 19th 2006 7:02PM
dude who cares if its english or watever if was in japaneze i still play it im mean does it really matter i just want to play the game
TheKing @ Nov 19th 2006 8:53PM
Wow you managed to insult both the goat herders of the world, and the sheep herders as well??
whats next? Orphans?? Leprasy?? Next time i suggest you search every origin of every word you are about to use. Double check the refrences you used. Find out what each word means in each language that exists then inform us of the exact areas that which you said fall under. Otherwise...you have no business using those words shame on you...shame on you...
Everyone have a good day
Sylvia @ Nov 19th 2006 10:19PM
"Fish On" Is actually a very common phrase used to let those around you know that you have a fish on your line. Up in Alaska fishing can get very... well... Ok were just going to say that "Combat Fishing" really is something that goes on. If you yell "Fish On" and you dont get your line out of the water and out of the way, its very likely to get cut. End of story. So I find it hilarious that such a phrase would end up in a game!
Chris @ Nov 19th 2006 11:14PM
Also, please note that controlling chicken with wooden sword is a pretty common ability in chickenfarming. It's what you do when the chicken got loose and you can't control it with conventional means.
It's obvious that none of you spend a lot of time among chickens and those that sword them.
Joe @ Nov 20th 2006 2:44AM
I got the game today and I noticed the same thing with the chicken. I couldn't find anything else about it on the internet. A search lead me here. I attacked the chicken as the wolf, repeatedly, and I became the chicken for like 30 seconds.
Easter Egg goodness.
I was hoping the chickens would attack me like in previous games.
