1UP editors: Wii got punk'd

Dan Hsu caught on quickly, after launching into a mini-tirade about unreturned e-mails to Nintendo. A few others, however, were no so lucky, even sitting down to play the games for many minutes before realizing they were mere marionettes in a sick and twisted mind game. All the embarrassment has been caught on tape, uploaded, and embedded below.

Is anyone else sick of Flash video?
this is the third time a flash video player has not worked for me today. I am just tired of them
Shadow @ Nov 12th 2006 6:42PM
I agree, these flash videos have never worked for me. I say we should try to stick with youtube as much as possible.
Huzzah!! @ Nov 12th 2006 6:41PM
OMG!! I'm SOOO doing that to my roommates!!!
Nah, I'm too lazy. :P
sith @ Nov 12th 2006 6:41PM
That was pretty funny near the end. I think the prank worked better with a racing game as there isn't too much you can deviate by. I mean you see the turn...and you turn. It looks like you did it youself However it's easy to get suspicious if you are shooting and turning in totally opposite directions in Metroid Prime.
Jr7891 @ Nov 12th 2006 6:41PM
I rather have flash, then having to download all the time.
The reason Youtube is so big is because of its ease of use. No downloading, no filetypes, just press play and go.
But, update your flash player if you haven't and use Firefox. Flash ads on webpages can fuck up the loading of flash videos.
Inspired @ Nov 12th 2006 6:42PM
haha
I like that the guy sat down to play metroid and figured out that he wasn't playing. He just let them have their jokes, and then was like, "I like the fact that ... this is running off of a tape cassette."
Nice prank.
hoo-haa @ Nov 12th 2006 6:45PM
OMG U NINTY FANBOIS THINK TIS IS ZO FUNYYYYY
LAFF IT UP
PS3 WILL PWNZ U
matthew @ Nov 12th 2006 6:47PM
YouTube is Flash also.
That said, gamevideos.com rarely – if ever– works on my computer. I always just assumed its because I use a Mac and gamevids is doing something that they didn't bother testing on Safari. Like BestBuy.com's menus. Or lots of other sites.
Szu @ Nov 12th 2006 7:01PM
The last segment with the guy Jason playing Auto Modelista has to be staged. Jason was standing right next to Hsu when Hsu called them "F'n Liars".
maxx77 @ Nov 12th 2006 6:56PM
I like Flash videos, save for the ones from Gamevideos.com. The video plays fine, but there's never any audio. I've tried it on three different computers, different browsers, different versions of Flash... never works. Everything else plays fine though.
Ndric @ Nov 12th 2006 6:57PM
LMFAO
Andrew Yoon @ Nov 12th 2006 6:58PM
OMG... I think milk came out of my nose. And I certainly didn't drink milk today.
nintendo fan @ Nov 12th 2006 6:58PM
Tht is the greatest thing 1up has ever done.
ZeldaX @ Nov 12th 2006 6:59PM
@hoo-haa
here's some facts kid
PS3,$600 Top Model, 400k units for USA
problems with blue ray player, and internal system problems.
Wii, $250 Single Model, 4million units for USA
no problems.
Yeah, you might want to go back to School, obviously declaring victory by selling 100k units to japan, doesnt mean PS3 won. It Failed.
Zach @ Nov 12th 2006 7:06PM
Yeah just keep in mind the guys who didn't figure it out are the ones that are reviewing and writing about videogames for a living. I have so much hope for the industry! :)
still a pretty funny video though
Dan @ Nov 12th 2006 7:23PM
LMFAO - cool, i am so doing that to someone
Am i the only one that found it wierd and cool that their pet chiwawa is actually in the video...and wearing a sweater
its name is minnie...i dunno i just wanted it to be known
D2E @ Nov 12th 2006 7:31PM
lmfao, the first one was hilarious cuz it was so long. and the car worked alot better as well (#3s comment was right on the money)
Iced_Eagle @ Nov 12th 2006 7:33PM
Haha that's awesome :D
The guys in the first clip got on quickly.
PhoenixJ @ Nov 12th 2006 7:39PM
@Shadow
Youtube IS flash video
Austin @ Nov 12th 2006 7:39PM
@ matthew:
I'm on a Mac too, and I dont have problems with any of the websites you mentioned... odd.
anyways, I find Mark Macdonald to be suprisingly toned down here. He's usually a douche.
D2E @ Nov 12th 2006 7:40PM
refering to comment 14, at first I thought u were right, but i think that they just edited it out of order and the guy in the white shirt was in on it at that point, but they put it at the beginning
Luke @ Nov 12th 2006 7:40PM
It's not flash video in general, it's gamevideo's flash videos. They SUCK! Please fix your dumb player gamevideos.com. Send them hate e-mail until they fix it.
DakidOG @ Nov 12th 2006 7:42PM
It was weird I clicked play to see the video and it just froze, then I moved my mouse and it played, I stoped moving my mouse and it stoped playing, I did this several times thinking WTF? to watch the whole video i kept moving my mouse.
I feel sorry for those guy's I know they feel like asses.
Josh @ Nov 12th 2006 7:46PM
Is anyone not getting any sound on this one? Ugh...
DakidOG @ Nov 12th 2006 7:47PM
@13 I thought it was 4 million wii worldwide?
Monito @ Nov 12th 2006 7:50PM
To #7
How did you post during the day? I thought trolls turned to stone if they got exposed to light, and I have yet to find a cave with any kind of internet connectivity.
Ryan @ Nov 12th 2006 7:51PM
LMAO @ video
That was the funniest thing I have seen all day. They totally got punk'd, and yes I too agree the prank works best with the racing game.
Foetoid @ Nov 12th 2006 7:56PM
Yes it is 4 million worldwide. Not 4 million for USA.
Shlomo @ Nov 12th 2006 8:08PM
HI-larious! I had a DVD of some full rez Mario footage from the Wii and I pretended that my TV remote was controlling it.
Though I didn't to it to trick anyone, I'm just can't wait for the Wii to come out.
I'm cool, by the way...
Paul Gale @ Nov 13th 2006 1:29AM
Mark MacDonald sure pulled a great one on the rest of the EGM and 1up gang. This tops my April Fool's prank that I did on 1up earlier this year. True, mine was almost obviously fake, but it still tricked some people. Zelda: Twilight Princess plus a Wii Remote and I rode that joke a good distance.

ah my mistake, got the numbers mixed up, but seriously I was just telling the kid, why he thinks PS3 won by just selling 100k units for Japan, 400k for USA. When Wii has more units to sell, IMO.
EdEN @ Nov 12th 2006 8:19PM
And it's only 80,000 units for Japan, not 100,000. They took some units to "launch" in other territories.
playclever @ Nov 12th 2006 8:18PM
That was quite brilliant. I'd like to think I'd catch on sooner, but a room full of people can be quite convincing ;)
Markham Carroll @ Nov 12th 2006 8:26PM
Oh my gosh, hoo-haa, you're so right! I seriously just got PWNZed by a PS3 just three minutes ago! It, like, shot through the roof and did that... PWNZing thing or whatever, and I got totally PWNZed!
Forgive me for finding joy in an unworthy game system! I am unclean!
Davis @ Nov 12th 2006 8:57PM
typo alert.
I think you meant "not so lucky" instead of "no so lucky" in the second paragraph.
B33 @ Nov 12th 2006 9:24PM
"

Wrong. It's around 4 million units split between Europe, North America, and Japan. And it's been cut back from 4 million.
You also seem to forget about the $500 model PS3. Which is still very good and the only difference is the hard drive and wifi support.
automatic @ Nov 12th 2006 9:25PM
I'm pretty sure "hoo-haa" was kidding, people. How can you look at that post and not see the sarcasm?
quicksilverzxc @ Nov 12th 2006 9:42PM
dude, click the play button on the bottom right, not the screen....
Textbook @ Nov 12th 2006 9:55PM
ive never had any problems with any sort of flash video player, including Youtube, Dailymotion, Gamevideos, Google Video, etc. so i don't really know what you're all talking about
Ritz @ Nov 12th 2006 9:59PM
Guys, its an issue with the sound slider. Try changing it when you play the video. The sound should cut in =)
john @ Nov 13th 2006 12:55AM
gamevideos has never worked right for me. You'd think that a site dedicated to technology would be able to get their frickin' flash videos to work. Oh well. At least they don't crash my browser anymore...
Juan C @ Nov 12th 2006 10:05PM
lol, but joke aside, a bunch of game sites already got a retail Wii, 1up hasn`t? strange. I bet Gamespot and IGN are already working on the Zelda/Exite Truck reviews by now.
Covarr @ Nov 12th 2006 10:08PM
I have NEVER ONCE been able to load gamevideos. It may have something to do with my ISP, or maybe they just suck, I can't even access their website. YouTube I don't mind as much, or gametrailers, or pretty much ANY OTHER video hosting site. It's not just that I can't play the video, even the player, or anything else from them doesn't load. It would be really nice to see more youtube hosted videos, and less gamevideos.
Dante Diabo @ Nov 12th 2006 10:59PM
Does this remind anyone else of watching games in the arcade on demo mode, waiting for coins? I'd walk up and start mashing buttons, pretending to play because I didn't have any quarters. I would convince myself that somehow my button mashing was actually influencing what was happening on screen? Our brains like to connect unrelated actions together more than it likes to reassure us that they're unconnected. Good times. Good fakeout.
doyouflip @ Nov 12th 2006 11:43PM
@ hoo-haa
You learned to read and write from text messages, didn't you?
sockatume @ Nov 13th 2006 12:14AM
LEGENDARY behaviour from those fellows.
metayoshi @ Nov 13th 2006 1:14AM
Wow, that was a great video. The guy doing the racing game really did believe he was playing. I can't believe they pulled that off... especially the metroid part since you'll need the nunchuck for metroid and they didn't use one. That shows how uneducated some people are about these games.
Matt @ Nov 13th 2006 1:20AM
Thats is flipping hilarious! Props to the guys who put this together, I laughed so hard. Only a week left until the wii comes out!
WhiteHawk @ Nov 13th 2006 3:00AM
For those on a Mac like me, the video doesn't work on Safari, but does on Camino and in Firefox the audio works but no video to start with, but if you grab the slider and move it the video will appear.
PS: for some reason adding a comment on this site doesn't work in Camino, so this site needs to get coded better and 1UP needs to use a different video player.
My Band on Online Radio @ Nov 13th 2006 1:23AM
That's sweet! Does anyone know where they got the controller?
