Dan,

People have had mixed luck with getting their tunes back after a major mess-up and failure. It seems to depend on the Apple rep you get.

ALH,

Distance hasn't been a huge issue with the Wiimote. You probably won't have that much trouble with it. There have been issues with certain kind of lights, but the overwhelming majority of people won't have a problem.

Did you guys find anything out about copying game data? I would really love to know how it's going to work, if you can at all. Most importantly I would like to know if you can copy it to and from your sd card to your system. Since there's only one sd card slot.

Also I was just thinking, is it possible to upload pictures to the internet from your sd onto a website like photobucket?

""NOTE: Some Virtual Console games can only be played with a Classic Controller. (sold separately) [this seems to contradict previous confirmation that Gamecube controllers would work on all Virtual Console games -Ed.]" (pg. 25)"

They probably just mean that you can't use the Wiimote and nunchuck on them (not enough buttons), not that the Gamecube controller won't also work AS a classic controller.

One minor correction...

On the last one, it says the settings affect all controllers "currently connected" to the console, right? That should mean that you can turn the others off while you change settings, and it'll only affect the one that's connected. Then you take turns like that for the others, and reconnect all of them.

It probably won't be as difficult as it sounds.

I like how the points about the pictures contradict themselves.

"The Photo Channel can display a maximum of approximately 1,000 photos. If your SD card has more than 1,000 photos, remove the card from the Wii console and remove or reorganize your photos in your camera, cell phone or computer."

"You can not save or overwrite photos or videos on the SD card."

"NOTE: You will not be able to send photos from your Wii console to the PC/cell phone user."

Even so, these things don't really matter to me. I want this thing so I can play motion sensor games, I'm not gonna be using it as a second computer.

An SNES controller has D-pad, start, select, ABXYLR. A Gamecube controller has D-pad, 2 analog sticks, start, and ABXYLRZ. My guess, then, is that SNES games won't be playable with a Gamecube controller. The Gamecube's Z _could_ double as select, and the weird layout of the Gamecube's ABXY _could_ map to SNES's ABXY, but it's possible that Nintendo testing found that to be too awkward for some games, thus requiring the classic controller.

I'm _GUESSING_ that the game list referred to is this:

http://www.nintendo.com/gamelist

If you narrow down the search, via the Category box in the advanced filtering, to just the SNES Virtual Console games:

http://www.nintendo.com/gamelist?start=1&oord=asc&osort=title&sort=&cmd=&toggle=true&query=&tf=&cf=Virtual+Console+--+SNES&sf=&ef=&rf=&pf=&mf=&af=&vf=&nf=

Then you can view the details and it will say something like:

"Use the Classic Controller or GCN Controller to play this game"

If you go and look at Gunstar Heroes from the Genesis Virtual Console games you get:

"Use the Classic Controller to play this game"

But you apparently can use the Gamecube controller for TurboGrafx16 games. This makes no sense to me at all... I never owned a Genesis (Mega Drive over here) so I can't really recall - is there any reason why the Gamecube controller can't act as a direct replacement for the Genesis controller?

Dude...nintendo.com is a pretty big site.

@43
I think I found what he's talking about. It's not actually a single list; on nintedo.com, search for "virtual console," in the "games" section, and there should be a list of games.

If you click on Gunstar Heroe, it says "Extra Game Features:...Use the Classic Controller to play this game"

If you click on Bomberman '93, it says "Extra Game Features:...Use the Classic Controller, Wii Remote or GCN Controller to play this game"

I don't know if this proves you CAN'T play Gunstar Hwroes with a GCN controller, but...there it is.

As to the fact that some games can and some games can't be played with a GCN controller: I'm fine with that. I WOULD be upset if you couldn't play ANY games with the GCN controllers. This way, although there are some games that you "must" have that you may need a classic controller for, if all you want is Bomberman '93...that's $20 to $80 (for up to 4 players) that you don't have to spend.

To 59, I took a look at Nintendo's game list. All of the Genesis games were rated RP while everything else was rated E. The Genesis VC games list likely haven't been updated yet but when they are, I expect a "usable by Gamecube Controller" will be added.

I won't be "purchasing" any Virtual Console games simply because I've already "licensed" every game that they've announced already and don't feel I should have to pay for it again. I mean how many times do I have to pay for Super Mario Bros anyway?

Incidentally, I checked my copy of Ristar and Super Mario 64; both were rated K-A (Kids to Adults) which was changed to E (Everyone). I don't understand why it would take the ESRB such a long time to re-rate Ristar.

If you want a more specific URL, use this:

http://www.nintendo.com/channel/wii

Once there, click 'See all game titles' by Wii Titles. You'll have to wad through the proper Wii titles, but it gets the job done.

So far, checking a few titles for each of the systems, it looks like only, of all the possible titles, the /Genesis/ titles require the Classic controller, and not something that'd make some sense like the SNES games or even N64. That really disappoints me, looks like no co-op Gunstar Heroes/Toejam & Earl for me, plus it makes no sense since the GC set up, especially on the Hori pad, could be the closest to ideal for the Genesis.

Anyways, while there's no rating, the Sonic page is more filled out, so I checked there. It is possible it'll be there in the end and they're just playing it safe, but I imagine Sega could easily surprise me with something dumb.

7. "# "Software downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel is licensed to you, not sold" (pg. 25)"

Now THAT has the potential to be a real bitch...

Response:
Don't want to dissapoint you, but softwares are like a driving license, you get the RIGHT to use drive (driving license?) as you get the right to legally use a software. You will never own the right, because it can be given and removed at any time in case of EULA violation.

AFAIK if you buy a VC you can download any number of times. The bit from the manual seems to be for erasing the master list of games rather than the games themselves. So if you delete your account you can't download games again, but you can delete games etc. without worry.

As someone said, it's not a big deal, if you delete your account then you're an idiot and get what you deserve!

One thing that I'm curious about, and is probably a bit premature, is what happens to my virtual console games when Nintendo's next system comes out? With Nintendo making a huge movement to resurrenct their old library, it seems highly profitable so it's likely that they'll continue this philosophy in the future. I wonder what Nintendo will do when people have a virtual library of dozens of games and suddenly a new system is released. I better be able to transfer those games to the new system. I could see Nintendo not allowing this: for example, say Nintendo gets $5 on 11/19 for Donkey Kong. The user could in theory own (actually license) that game the rest of their life and if each new system can accept the old games then Nintendo will have to perform work in the future to support games for a user that will never result in Nintendo getting an additional penny.

Yea, it's a premature thinking considering the system isn't even available yet but I do wonder what will happen to my virtual console library in November 2011.

dude... ridiculous. this whole post is fucking stupid. are you people retards?

# "NOTE: Adjusting the speaker and Rumble settings will affect all Wii remotes currently connected to the Wii console. [I hope everyone likes the same settings. -Ed.]" (pg. 63)

so connect controller 1, adjust, disconnect. connect controller 2, adjust, disconnect. connect controllers 3 and 4, adjust, disconnect. now 1 and 2 have different settings, and 3 and 4 are set the same.

all software is "licensed" and not owned.

nintendo will always have a record of your VC downloads.

gamecube controllers DO work for VC games. that "rule" is simply telling you that the REMOTE won't work for all games.

fucking a. fuck you people.

most retarded joystiq article ever.

-"superfan" tactics.

3 to 8 feet from my 60 inch TV? You've got to be kidding me... I guess this is why they didn't support HD. They knew the Wiimote would cause people to have to sit too close for the larger, HD televisions.

"Also, could someone answer me this. If your Xbox 360 hard drive gets formatted or corrupted, what happens to the Live Arcade games you've purchased?"

Other than having to redownload them again for FREE, nothing. Purchases from XBL Marketplace are tied to your gamertag, not console.

Nintendo screwed this up big time.
_________________________

Wrong! I have been fighting with MS for 4 months now to get the Arcade games I paid for on the 360 back, after my 360 broke and I had to get a new one.

Yes, when you're ONLINE the games work, as long as you're using your gamertag. But if you're OFFLINE, only the demos work. That's it.

And unless you have the ORIGINAL receipt and the RETURN receipt and the receipt for the NEW 360 MS will NOT let you re-download those games. They need ALL those receipts faxed to them. If you lost one, tough luck -- you're out the money and you're out the games.

So Nintendo didn't "screw up big time" anymore than Microsoft did. I think both of them screwed up in a huge way. Gaming is becoming a chore.

Get these consoles back offline and let us have the games we paid for, not little portions of the games we paid for. Suddenly video games are like 100 piece jigsaw puzzles -- where you pay $50 - $60 for the first 60 pieces and end up paying the same amount over time to buy the next 40. Microtransactions are a scam and will destroy gaming.

k, some of you are whining that the games from VC are licensed not sold. wah. when you buy a DVD or a CD or a game on a disc, you are buying a copy of that game with a license to use it. saying that they're selling licenses not ownership means nothing because any and all software "ownership" that you have (unless you're a developer) is a license.

I have checked the VC game list at nintendo.com, and YES there ARE some games that require the Classic Controller (and cannot use the GCN controller). From the looks of it, all such games are sega games... which makes sense, since the Genesis controller had 3 buttons. So if you want to play any sega games (such as Sonic... w00t!), you'll need a classic controller, but it's not that big of a deal since I doubt that you would ever need more than one.
