I agree 100%. I would love to see an easier way of playing with my friends in Gears. My buddy and I played Gears online for 2 hours the other night and about a third of it wasn't even spent playing the game but trying to get together in a match that we both could join before it got full.

Yesterday, my 3 or 4 friends were playing ranked matches and pwning people, we were always on the same team. I just hosted a match and they'd join it. I guess it also helps when we were playing assassination, not warzone. but still we kicked ass as a team. This is good cause we don't random smucks on our team who suck badly and make us lose.

You're lucky you got into a match. I gave up trying to get into ranked matches cause I would just kicked out anyway. I LOVE the mutilplayer (when you can find a game)... The interface sucks for unranked. The nice thing about halo is it was simple to use. However, gears is so difficult to get into a match or even host one that I ll probably just trade this game in for COD3 or something. Besides its already apparent the cheating is already taking place here anyways. At least it took cheaters more that 5 days to figure out how to boost in halo.

ok well the most effective and easy adjustment to make would be to institute clan matches. Give the clan the aggregate true skill gained in the match. If the clan wins the match double their true skill, if they lose half it. This way winning will also be desired rather than simply gettin points yourself. also get rid of the host name in ranked matches, or do an auto join where you set your specs for what you want and it auto drops you into the room with the most people with similar trueskill and the best connection. Plz Epic, the game is great but the methods of online multiplayer are lacking. Come on guys halo 2 came out years ago and it still has the most innovative and effective method of online play! Cliffy B dont dissapoint.

I got to say I would love to see Gears set up basically the same way Halo is for finding games. That was just the best way to find game and it was genius and you ended up playing all the maps not just the certain one everyone is in love with. I really hope they don't plan on making that there permanent ranked battle way its so bad right now and especially that half of the game you lose connection to.

Bungies system is the reason why it is still number one to this day maybe into next we will see. and you forgot to mention audio. because on gear you have to frequently remove your mic and don't let me get goning about the wireless mic which give back a loud noise in the guest in the lobby or during the game but i do love gear just copy bungies structure

Halo 2 has the best matchmaking experience of any game period. You dont have to do any work. You simply press a button and it finds a game for you and your friends. Thats why its the only multiplayer game me and my friends will play online. Having to find a room to join or whatever has never worked out well for me.

God why do I click on these things ... expecting a level headed point or balanced argument ... from a Halo fanboy of all people ... short-stroking the same week old topics ... I must be retarded. There is only one point of contention - GoW hasn't implemented clan play yet. Everything else seems trivial. On some levels Halo's matchmaking is better and on others GoW triumphs.

Playing with or against friends is naturally more fun than random people, but the whole point of what ranked matches stand for has been lost on people. Too many games are compromised or ruined because of cheaters, stacked teams and unfair balances. You wanna play with people from your friends list on your team for hours? There is this thing they call unranked. I did it the other day, it went on for hours with no interruption and it was great.

However if your world begins and ends with friends, you only play ranked and neither you or your friends can host then yeah GoW is going to suck for a number of reasons.

(a) You all must have crappy internet connections because none of you can even support hosting a standard 4 on 4 unranked match. Otherwise you would have thought about this right?

(b) ... but that reminds me, you have a heavy hate-on for unranked matches. Which leaves you with the only option of jumping into other people's ranked rooms and hoping your friends show before it becomes full ...

(c) ... but that rarely happens. So you play ranked matches against totally random people because you're too high brow to go unranked and have fun with friends. You shake your fist in anger and vent off to anyone who will listen, but at the end of the day you're happy living this way because in your mind if you can't play ranked games on a stacked team of people you know against random people for reputation and glory there's no point in playing at all.

Friends, fragfests, voice, fun = unranked.
Competitive play, frustration, guts glory honor = ranked.

I agree they should have had a better lobby system this is pathetic chasing your friends around on gears. How come nobdoy has mimicd halo 2s multiplayer setup. Thats why so many people play halo easy to find games without waiting forever for people to join and you can play games with your friends its outrageous that nobody has came close to that of a 2 year old game like halo 2. Dont people understand why halo 2 is so popular because of their lobby set up and there matchmaking and ranking system. People wanna feel like playing online is for a reason like a rank. People online want ranks not true ranking skill that is so stupid true skill nobody cares about that. They want ranks and they want matchmaking. Not create a room and wait for people to join but create a room send your friends invites and search for a game to find other people waiting to play. Not sit in there for an hour hoping somebody will join to start a game. Gears keeps saying microsoft wont let us let friends play rank games whatever if you had matchmaking style playlist then you wouldnt be put up against your friends because they would find random teams. Matchmaking is with random people I never got matched up with my friends on my playlist when I played halo 2 for 2 years. Its ridiculous how nobody has made matchmaking as there online lobby type.

Halo 2 is by far the best matchmaking experience to date. I was playing GoW last night and had a horrible team on my side and the other side had nothing but pros that kept winning. Not exactly fair.

People wonder why halo 2 is still on top of the online standings 2 years later. They have the easiest way to play with your friends. They have replay because of the ranking system people want to achieve a new rank. They have matchmaking to where you dont have to sit in a room and wait for players to come to you. Microsoft wants all games to have trueskill thats crap because people want some type of rank for them to achieve to make them wanna play better get better to get a higher rank. You cant cheat in Gears of War if you had matchmaking because you wouldnt be matched up with your friends it would be random other 50,000 people. If you create a lobby and put it on team slayer which is a rank game, and send your friends invites ite you and 3 other friends will be a team of 4. Who you know and play with alot and practice with. When you start matchmaking you cannot get matched up with 4 of your other friends because it randomly selects other people for you to play with that you do no know. Games need to start mimicing halo 2s lobby system if they want success in getting on top of the live board.

"halo matchmaking allowed to much cheating... which ruined the game"

You obivously haven't played a lot of Gears of War online yet, because cheating is rampant in this game too. There will always be cheaters. I definitely prefer the Halo matchmaking system. It makes it super easy for my friends and I to challenge another team, which for us is what playing online is all about.

If I remember correctly, people complained a lot when Halo 2 came out about the matchmaking system. It took a while for it to become accepted as the new wonderful... Hopefully Gears will receive a patch shortly though.

Halo2 (of course leaderboards and ranks can die for all I care).

I just want to get a group of 4 together and be matched up against a comprable group of 4.

Lets let the ranking happen behind the scenes (ie: no rank number next to the name or leaderboards to gloat about).

In my opinion, Halo 2 is the best multiplayer experience so far (console or PC). It's easy to find games when by yourself or to join up with friends and play together. You never get a message saying "Sorry, we couldn't find any available games" which then requires you to push buttons to search again. Halo 2's multiplayer still has some problems though. For all of Bungie's talk about how the number rankings "aren't important" and "don't mean anything", they sure display them prominently everywhere. What we need is a system like in Halo 2 but with the rank being completely hidden. What they should display instead of that number is an overall experience number and some sort of class ranking system. By class ranking system I mean that the game should recognize that I have the longest lifespan in every game I play and award me by displaying a tag that boasts what I'm good at.

According to the recent EGM article on halo 3 this is actually similar to what they're planning for halo 3. Lets just hope they get it right.

"First, there were no visible lobbies ... Instead, Bungie implemented a system where you could attach yourself to friends or foes and join what they call a "party"."

As far as I'm concerned, every other pub/dev makes a huge mistake with every online game that doesn't copy Bungie's excellent matchmaking system. Bungie's matchmaking is what helps keep Halo 2 at the top of the XBL charts.

Weeding through lobbies is annoying as hell. Choose your game type, and put me in the game. Simple, effective, and fast.

Why the hell would you want it any other way? Manual host-searching wastes too much time NOT gaming. Quickmatch is not a viable substitute either.

Honestly, if all games had Bungie's setup, I'd play a lot more games online. Burnout Revenge/Full Auto/Gears of War setups drive me nuts.

The ranking system is for a personal rank. The Trueskill system doesn't allow you team up with friends for the purpose of improving rank. It does let you clan/friend it up in player mode....

GoW's lobby/party system is pretty bad.

Think about it. The game emphasizes teamplay, but yet you're unable to play with a team. Instead you are randomly matched with tom and dick, and then you're expected to make a good team with them? That's completely bogus.

Just like Halo 2 the game should allow the formation of teams, and then just randomly match them with other teams.

The other problem with GoW's lobby is that you can't change game settings after you've created the lobby. That's just an incredible.
