Dolce & Gabbana does Super Mario
$175 for a t-shirt? Really? We suppose being deemed worthy for high fashion is a cultural milestone, but a grotesquely overpriced t-shirt seems to clash with Nintendo's thrifty image. Given the shirt's cost in relationship to Wii's asking price, Dolce & Gabbana's forthcoming PlayStation 3 tee should only set you back $420. [Via Digg]

Does it come with the magnifying glass in the center too?
J!N @ Nov 14th 2006 2:59PM
it wouldn't be such a bad price if it wasn't such a godawful ugly shirt i mean goddamn it looks like an iron on.
Brian Reedy @ Nov 14th 2006 2:59PM
I would NEVER spend more than $25 on a T-shirt. Hell, I buy 3-packs of gray and black Tees, because I'm "thrifty".
I don't understand why wealthy Americans need to waste money on this bullshit nonsense. It's a regular cotton T-shirt, with Mario on it. K-mart would sell the same thing for $5.
32_Footsteps @ Nov 14th 2006 2:59PM
Who knew silk screening became so expensive?
Heck, you can go over to the Nintendo store in Rockefeller Center and buy a shirt with Mario on it that looks nicer than that for something approaching a reasonable price (I think for $15; it's been a while since I've been there). Tell me it's $175 because it comes with a free bar of gold or something.
Dracula Jones @ Nov 14th 2006 3:06PM
I don't care how much the shirt costs, it's one of the ugliest designs I have ever seen. Target has better designed Nintendo shirts for like $8. I could design a better iron-on in Paint. You're fired, Dolce. Gabbana, you're being reassigned to the spice mines!
Steve Galgas @ Nov 14th 2006 3:06PM
Didn't I see that on CafePress?
Tim @ Nov 14th 2006 3:08PM
Yeah, that's a ridiculous price and it's not even a cool shirt. Like #2 said, looks like an iron-on.

i highly doubt joystiq readers are D&G's target market.

Brian Reedy-
I guess it's common knowledge that wealthy Americans are the ONLY consumers that buy overpriced clothing. Yeah, they don't do that sort of thing over in Europe or Asia. Not at all.
Me, I think the shirt's kinda cool looking. The graphic isn't the best, but the shirt itself is an awesome color with the sweet orange trim. I'd maybe buy it for under $30.
spaceboy @ Nov 14th 2006 3:15PM
it's all about perceived value. dolce and gabbana is know for it's high priced clothing. if it sold something for 10$ the general public would buy it and they really don't want that. they want celebrities and other wealthy whores wearing mario. it's the same reason they have a 300$ RAZR when you can get a silver one for 50$. EXCLUSIVITY!
32_Footsteps @ Nov 14th 2006 3:17PM
Interesting...
Looking at the links below the shirt, a D&G t-shirt without Mario on it is $150. So Mario's presence on the shirt is only a $25 mark-up.
Still, either that shirt gives people super powers, comes with a gold bar, causes world peace to spontaneously break out whenever you wear it, or is hideously overpriced. I think I'll guess the fourth.

that mag lens has GOT to be a mouse cursor not hidden.
@ #2
huh. It looks like a neat design, but it REALLY does look like an iron on. That part alone almost makes the shirt look bad. I'm sure it's high quality. If the design washes out in the rain, surely Joystiq will cover that
ackmondual @ Nov 14th 2006 3:21PM
almost as bad as the official Sienfeld posters that were being sold for $50 just after the series ended

If you think Americans are the only materialistic suckers on the planet, you need to get out more.
I've traveled Europe. I have a European GF (Finnish). And I can honestly say the average American is less of a "brand whore" than our friends across the Atlantic. But the shirt looks cheap and dorky, so why argue?
Zeruel @ Nov 14th 2006 3:50PM
Haha. James just wanted to find a way to fit a "420" reference in the article. =)
Nate Graves @ Nov 14th 2006 4:11PM
Now why would he *ever* want to work 420 in there? Hurr hurrr.
Maybe because it's HITLER'S BIRTHDAY AND HE'S A GODAMN NAZI?!
HUH?!
DID YOU THINK OF THAT, CHUCKLES?!
I agree with #15, Slater. I've also traveled Europe and can vouch for the same.
It doesn't make you any less of an idiot, regardless of origin. A lot of 'high fashion' is ugly, expensive clothing that is...expensive because of the brand and not because it is fashionable.
Which is ironic, I think. I'm not positive. I'll have to check with Morisette.
AoE @ Nov 14th 2006 4:55PM
$175 for a designer tee isn't that bad... $175 for a designer tee that looks like it's just sporting an iron-on of a mid-90's nintendo magazine advertisment is.
Nate Graves @ Nov 14th 2006 5:18PM
$175 is too much for any shirt.
Period.
That cost them a quarter to make, and took about three seconds to design. Calling it a 'designer' tee is an insult to anyone who has every spent designing anything.
Zing @ Nov 16th 2006 5:44PM
F that.
I can get a shirt with mario AND bling on it for 20 dollars at the neighbor hood ghetto store :)
Jonah @ Nov 14th 2006 6:59PM
See, the price has to cover that it not only has a hole in the top for your head, but a hole on EACH SIDE for your arms. You just can't get that anywhere.
Jeramy @ Nov 14th 2006 7:14PM
lol how much for the ps3 shirt???
dr.melle @ Nov 16th 2006 2:35PM
true, us europeans are brand whores. if its "big in america", people will eat eachother to get it first. usually when the hype is over in the us for about 8 months. but i guess its like pretty much everywhere, there will always be fashion victims and people with wills of their own...
C. Baines @ Nov 15th 2006 3:07AM

lol your kidding right? D&G is from Europe. Uhh, A Bathing Ape, Supreme, Versace? Europe and Japan is known for expensive clothes, we have Wrangler and Solo jeans.
