How is this even possible when the PS3 contains the soul of the PS2?!?
(The notorious Emotion Engine chip)

Surely there is more to this story...

There's a really simple solution to this dilemma. Use your PS2. Do people really play their old games when the next-gen games come out? It's kinda like driving your p.o.s. after purchasing a new car.

There were a number of PS1 titles the PS2 didn't support, and some of them were fairly high profile (such as the MGS VR mission add-on). I imagine having having two-generation backward compatibility would cause a number of headaches for those beleaguered Sony engineers.

I wonder if its the same games the PS2 can't play, Final Fantasy anthology anyone? the game getting buggered when you try to save. or the games that appeared to not work on the slim PS2.

could you guys look into that joystiq :D if its the same games then its really not a big deal.

Honestly, I was surprised that they are still supporting older PS2 and PS1 games at all. Being able to play a backlog of over thousands of games is quite a feat.

Actually, using the PS2 is like driving your p.o.s. after purchasing a
new car. You got it all wrong.

well... like cars, the "p.o.s." systems/games/etc tends to go to your children... or relatives... or your spouse... or your parents D:... only to regret doing so 5 years later due to nostolgia, only to find out your cousin gave away the NES to his friend who is no longer in contact with him ; ;

I play my PS1 games on PS2, whats wrong with that?

Its like all these arcade games you have on Xbox live, what is their purpose then if you want to go forward alone and not back ever? Are you saying there isn't an old game you would never like to try again in the future, a game you enjoyed so much as a kid? And don't bring gfx into this, it seems as though many of you have been brainwashed and consumed by the idea of GFX being the selling item of games and being the most important factor.

I still play NES and N64 games all the time (and I'd be playing Genesis if my stepdad didn't make me give it away to a cousin). I probably play more PS1 games on my PS2 than I do PS2 games. After I get Wii, I'll probably still be buying GameCube games that I missed when they came out but are now twenty bucks (Pikmin 2, RE4... *bows head in shame*... yeah, I missed RE4, I suck).

My biggest regret is not taking my 2600 with me when I moved. Making sure I never make that mistake again.

i dont see it as a such "big deal". first of all the poster even said there are "thousands of ps1 and ps2 games" so 200 not working is a small fraction of that. Of course there might be more since they might no have tested them all. Secondly, i dont think its such a bad thing considering they actualy CARE and trying to work on it than MS's half@ss job on backward compatibility. Also with virtual console PS1 games will be "more obsolete" - i rather not scrath my jumpin flashes (its such a fun game :) )

Gee, everyone made such a big deal over the fact that the 360 wouldn't play original Xbox games but suddenly it's expected and accepted that Sony doesn't live up to it's claim that the PS3 would be backwards compatible.

Ok... this is done by the FRIGGIN HARDWARE. They basically included a PS2 inside every PS3. How in the HELL are they not running correctly?!

ok so some games dont work that kinda sucks, whatever. What I really want is some sort of ripping tool I can use for the ps1 and ps2 games I've already purchased so I dont have to buy them again just to play em on my psp at (not so frequent) hot spots. That'd be cool.
unless they're going to make em online enabled like XBLA. one other thing are the Wii VC games going to be Online compatable as well?

@#19. Because Sony is full of shit on a lot of things. This is probably just another on that looooooooong list.
Once the honeymoon with this console is over and fanboys start to see the flaws in their uber-system for what they are, then we'll see exactly how good it is. Sony's biggest problem now is once the console is in the hands of the public, no amount of PR can help.

This isn't surprising since the slimline PS2 couldn't play all PS2 games. It sounds like changed the hardware and broke some of the compatibility again, this time with larger numbers.

Some games had backward compatibility issues because the developers didn't follow Sony guidelines for their consoles. Sony originally only supports compatibility for their exact guidelines. They can patch other things up later.

Also, polls have shown that backwards compatability is important for people when they first buy or are thinking about buying a system, but they usually never use the feature.

dear M$,
im sorry i made fun of you guys. Every time you made announcement for backwards compatible, I laughed at you guys. now I see whats going on... MS told us that they would try to get as many as you can. Sony the lashed out at poor XBOX for being different. Now the tables have turned and now we see the monster within. In the end we see what really happens in the world. Lies........ what goes around: comes around.

My apoligies to the honesty of M$ and Nintendo.

I checked Sony's PS3 promotional page about 3 months ago, and it said something about "most" games being playable. "Full compatibility" is corporate BS that basically means it can perform all the functions of the PS1 and PS2, but not necissarily play all the games. Given this IS a harddrive based system, I'm sure patches can be released, but I'd like to see a list of those 200 games. Sony did say most, and they also had a small text portion that said games that used Sony's standards for developing. BTW, VR missions works just fine on my PS2... FFA didn't work because of piracy prevention, I believe... It communicates with the PS1 a bit differently (read: nonstandard) than most games. Still sucked... There was no harddrive (*cough*) on the PS2 so no chance for patches... Let's hope Sony is smarter this time... Read: Let's annoy the crap out of them with letters demanding they patch those 200 games.

why would anyone support sony in the first place. no one even gives a holy rats ass what Sony has done in the past to peoples computers, their music, their way of life, ect ect.

i really dont understand the agrument either. KCUF Sony. I wouldn't say M$ is much better in the above, but at least they don't try to hide what they are doing and in turn make us (the consumers) into the bad guys dictating what we can and cannot buy and even how to buy it.
