I was disappointed when I hooked up my ps3 and it told me my "high definition" tv only ran up to 720p. I played resistance which is at 720p max anyway and it looks great. But, I guess I am lucky that I can even get the 720p.

On the back compatibility comment. I live in Japan, so, I tried running USregion code 1 DVDs and PS1/PS2 games. And to no suprise they didnt work. I then put in Kingdom Hearts II Japanese version in and it ran horribly. All blurry.

I'd be willing to bet, if this news had not arose. 90% of people would have had no clue that they weren't playing in hidef. Considering the majority of HDTV owners believe they are watching HD TV, when in fact they are watching standard def tv, and in fact don't even receive HD broadcasts.

This scaling issue is ONLY a problem for CRT's. As they display the resolution that they receive, and that's it. All other flat panel technologies, are fixed resolution. And as such must scale all source resolutions to their native.

Overcast, anyone who cannot tell the difference between HD and SD should be classified as legally blind. THE FACT REMAINS THAT 720P IS NOT AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE. I purchased my HDTV only 2 years ago and it does not support 720p; so everyone please stop with the claims that only ancient TV's don't support 720p. My Philips has unbelievable 1080i for a rear projection, looks like an LCD sometimes it's so smooth. I owned a 360 and wasn't too impressed by it, but have now learned to appreciate the system and its 1080i capabilities. Sony has royally screwed everyone at launch. I'm sure they will do their best to issue a patch/firmware update as to avoid a class action lawsuit, but how the hell does this happen? Did they not pay attention to the 360? Are they drinking too much saki on the production line? Whatever the reason may be, it remains UNACCEPTABLE, especially when charging $600+. Upscaling is a BIG DEAL. YES, EVEN A DEAL BREAKER, ESPECIALLY FOR FANS OF HD SUCH AS MYSELF. Granted, I won't run out and buy another 360, but I sure as hell won't settle for 480p games. So GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER SONY, OR YOU WILL SEE MY PS3 ON EBAY TOO!!! In the interim, anyone, if you have information regarding a fix for this, please email me at soopadaddy@aol.com!!!

I think 1% of HDTV owners have 1080p-capable HDTVs so Sony not releasing any 1080p games in not a big deal.

However, I do think they should have added compatibility for 1080i seeing how a majority of CRT HDTV owners can't do 720P.

But since a majority of Sony TV's sales are with their LCD HDTVs, which support 720P (even from when it first was released several years ago), they really didn't care about 1080i comptability

People, even the OLD XBOX HAD A SCALER CHIP in it as many of the old Xbox games were 720p or 1080i. For the PS3 not to include this is a crying shame. My year old 34" Sony HD CRT won't even work with the Ps3. And we all know they aren't going to be able to fix it with a patch, right?

/* 42.
Too bad my 61" Samsung DLP, gen 7, puts bars around the Xbox 360 picture when I use the VGA cable in 1080p.
*/

If you have a Samsung 6187 like me, you can (and should) zoom in on the picture of the VGA input to remove the black border (select picture size or something on your remote - sorry I forgot). This will also give you the ideal 1:1 pixel ratio for your display. This tip is also available on AVS Forum.

My TV doesn't support 720p, but I've read that my Toshiba 57H93 "upconverts" 480i and 720p to 540p or 1080i (selectable). So does this really matter to me? I'm confused.

If someone does file a class action lawsuit, please count me in! I'm one of those losers who didn't know better before shelling out the cash, and has an HDTV that's more than 2 months old...
Lately Sony has been quite ingenious when it comes to screwing its customers as well as throwing away tons of cash on miserably failed products.

I am purposely waiting to buy my PS3....and the plethora of "bugs" I keep seeing or hearing about is the MAIN reason. That, and I have a 55" Mistubishi Digital CRT RP HDTV...LOL. No 720p.
However....it seems as though we have alot of people in this forum who really do not understand their "HiDef" facts.
The 1080....or 720 or 480 tells the whole story regardless of the "i" or "p" that follows it.
Someone that says 720p is better than 1080i is ..well..an idiot. Think about it...from a tech standpoint.
If you have MORE scan lines with which to display an image...the better it will always be.
So, comparing an image with 360 MORE scan lines in it (720 vs. 1080)is really not even a contest. I don't care if it is interlaced or progressive scan. BUT..... IF you compare identical numbers, say 1080i vs. 1080p for instance....then of course the "p" will be sharper because as everyone knows progressive just looks better.
As for the PS3 launch...Sony blew it. They rushed a system out that wasn't quite ready yet.
Give them 12 months like the 360 has had...and then we'll see what happens. Sony will again be in more homes than anyone else. Remember....there are 100 million PS2s out there.

Date 01-12-07 I called Sony on the 10th and they had a tech. person call me the next day to help me with the 720p problem. I asked him 4 different ways if sony is going to fix the video problems and he would not tell me nothing. I think by the way he was talking to me that sony IS NOT planning to fix it. He was acting like that it was not sony's fault for the incompatablity problems. I don't think it is my tv's fault or my fault, IT IS MY FAULT for buying a PS3 though. It's funny my 360 works fine on the same tv. He tried to tell me that the 360 was stretching the picture to 1080i. If it is, it looks good. How about getting the PS3 to strech the picture like the 360!

I have a 50"RCA Scenium DLP with a built in HDTV tuner. I purchased it 3 years ago. I just purchased my long awaited ps3 and last night spent 2 hours on the phone trying to find out why my screen went blank when Need for Speed Carbon started up. They had me trying all kind of things, never saying anything about the 720p problem. I got up the next morning and got my tv's owners manual out and found out it only supports 480p and 1080i. I then went out and rented NBA 07 because it said it supported HD1080p and it played fine along with PS2 games and Blu-Ray movies. Sony first said the problem was using a hdmi to dvi cable was causing the problems. I told them to hang on and switched to component cables and the same thing, they acted dazed and confused. After reading all these postings I think they knew exactly what was wrong. Now before I rent or buy any games I make sure they say on the box that they support 1080i or 1080p, boy this sure eliminates a lot of good games. Signed...Ticked in Ohio!!!

I have an awesome 62" 1080i SONY tv that looks fantastic all the time in HD at 1080i. This was the absolute top of the line tv when it came out. It does not have 720p capability and it never matter because 1080i is better than 720p. Those who argue about interlacing issues are crazy. You simply cannot see the interlacing with the eyes that humans have. Also 1080i is 1920 pixels wide while 720 is only 1280. It's better hands down. All Sony had to do was include a scaler in the box. Either that or tell its developers to ONLY release 1080 games. My new PS3 does not play any of the four freaking games I bought today. I have not played one second of HD games. Is Sony crazy? The games don't even play on their own high end tv? I can't even find a list of the 1080i/p games online!

I had the same problem as you endlessbender with games not playing. If your games are not playing at all you need to go to the display settings and when you get to the option to set your display setting choose custom. Then when you get to the choices to select 480p, 720p and 1080i, de-select the 720p. Now when you put in a game that has 720p support the ps3 will down scale the game and play it at 480p. Far as what games are available in 1081, here is a link to a site where I posted that question and got a lot of answers as to which games are in 1080i (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=pslounge&message.id=258840#M258840 )...Hope this helps.
