I think it's lame, and I'm a big Nintendo fan. MP3 functionality seems kind of like a given, and to half-ass it like this is distressing.

I can only hope that firmware updates are the salvation of the industry, and fix these glaring oversights (because that's what this looks like to me).

As everyone has said I already have a DVD player and Home Theater system to play music and DVDs. If I want to stream HD videos I play em off my 360. For me the Wii is about the games, not about the photo channel or junk like that.

-If I want to view photos I use my PC,
-Web browsing? PC again,
-Stream HD? My 360 works great,
-Watch a DVD in upscaled 1080p? My HDMI equiped DVD player beats out everyhing,

For me, all those suggar coated extras are useless. You guys can play your DVDs on your PS3 or 360 till you go blue in the face, I will be playing too much LOZ on Sunday morning to care.

Weak VC Lineup???? come on.... Nintendo is in the business of making money, they make money by building gaming machines and writing software. If they released the entire catalog from day one they would never make as much money as releasing titles over time. They have to build awareness and intrest in the titles again and by staggering releases they can devote more advertising to them more effectively and thus increase sells. Just like MS's decision over the summer not to release all the XBL arcade games at one time...

The only part of the wii that I am a little (and I said a little) bit dissapointed in is teh way each VC game will occupy its own channel, and there are only 48 channels available on the system. A number of the channels are already spoken for, as well, like the photo channel, and the weather channel, etc... Probably wont turn out to be such a bad deal because how many VC games are the average consumer really going to buy? I am guessing about a dozen or so.

I don't think anybody actually CARES.

But then why even add the feature in the first place? Sure, not too many people were ACTUALLY going to use it, it's mostly there so that Nintendo can put it on the side of the box and make it seem like people are getting more for their buck. But it's a feature NINTENDO SAID would be implimented.

So, damnit Nintendo, FOLLOW THROUGH! Nintendo was supposed to be the last remaining game company with integrity. So why even bother touting a feature that they know is going to be way more trouble than it's worth?

They make it so hard to be a fan.

Minor annoyance indeed.

Still, as long as games keep it up like Excite Truck does, I won't mind that much.

Oh and remember, the Virtual Console will increase in titles by all companies involved.
It would have been foolish to release over 30 must-get titles on the Virtual Console, as that would have hurt sells of Wii games.

Consumer money has to go somewhere, and third parties would prefer it go to them instead of Nintendo getting it all due to a pre-packaged game and VC titles.

So just wait and it will come, most likely inbetween big Wii titles and during droughts, when they are supposed to be.

I know exactly what Nintendo is doing...

Remember that news about the DVD equipped Wii? Well, a DVD equipped Wii isnt much up an upgrade...so, what about a media-centric Wii.

But, to sell that you cant have a competing design, SO, you CRIPPLE the media functionality of the original Wii.. NO DVD playback and make everything as obtuse as possible. Then provide that back in the Media-centric version, add new colours.. then the fanbois can buy it again.

CHACHING CHACHING

Mark this page, you heard it from me first.

"MP3 playback that doesn't suck is expected nowadays"

In what, an mp3 player? Why would anyone expect an electronic device meant to play video games to be an mp3 player too?

"Essentially, you are replacing the probably-crappy game's sound track."

Obviously you didn't actually read the article, because this is just about the fact that there's no player to JUST play mp3s, without a game. Certain games, like Excitetruck, will have the option to play mp3s instead of the usual background music.

I haven't bother to read these posts...to many..

But who on earth would buy a Wii (or any console) to play mp3's? That is why they have adapaters and docs for mp3 players, to plug into stereos and what not.

Yeah they can update it but...oh well. This seems like a stupid reason to get annoyed.

As for the soundtrack, does EVERY XBox360 game let you do a soundtrack of their music? I thought only select games (like some racing games) could let you play your OWN soundtrack instead of theirs. To me, I feel the game developers usually do a good job on the music that I don't need anything else. Does PS3 let you import songs over ANY game's soundtrack? If they don't you need to post an article about how that annoys you too, only fair.

Lame article...

Don't feed the trolls, boys and girls. Like the DVD player, this is generally a ho-hum piece of news. The people that are complaining probably had no intention of buying the Wii anyway, it just makes them feel better to put down the system.

The reality is they're making a poor argument. If you have a rig that's using 5.1 sound for your consoles hooked up to your 60" plasma TV, most likely you already have other devices capable of playing MP3's, like an Xbox, Xbox360 or a PC. Why do you really care if the Wii comes with an MP3 player since it's already been established that custom soundtracks will be possible for some games?

If you have that kind of setup but don't have such a unit, where the hell are your priorities that you would purchase all that hardware and not have a single electronic component that can play MP3's? Technophiles LOVE new gadgets.

If you're Microsoft or Sony (both in the music business directly or indirectly), you have immediate access to all the requirements and standards for digitial media. Why would anyone expect Nintendo (who would be clearly at a disadvantage as they only make games) to spend so many resources on this non-gaming market? It's a poor business model. At least until Nintendo and Apple decide to play together and you can get ITunes as a Wii channel. It wouldn't surprise me with MSFT's new Zune player.

If you want a full-featured all-in-one media center, go buy a Premium 360, a PS3, or a PC with Vista. Nintendo is touting a value-priced unit that will be stripped of those little extras with a focus on gameplay.

Ok, other than the fact that I've got many other forms of ways to play DVDs, MP3s, look at pictures, and check the weather. I don't care about those extra features. The MP3 player was never announced, except for slide show playback. I only need four channels, one play game, two play VCgames, three downloads, four options. Three would allow you to get new VC games and updates, four would have Mii and any other options that are needed.

Little overlooks like this bother me, I want a complete product where everything works like it should. I want to use my Gamecube controllers for classic games. I want DVD playback. I want to be able to listen to my MP3's from my cell phones card. I'd gladly pay more to get those features. Do you need them in a gaming machine? No, but you dont need anything in consumer electronics, you just want it. Seriously, this machine keeps letting me down. Im starting to hate all next gen systems.
Thats my opinion and I dont give a fuck what you think about it.

whatever happened to playin the game and turning on a stereo to listen to your music now everyone has ipods and such. remember snes? and all the classic systems, we werent complaining then that there was no custom music. yea now we have the technology but which should be obsolete videogame systems or mp3/cd/tape/ any kind of music player other then video games systems? they didnt need to have any kind of music player just play video games. the songs that come with the game are good enough

Remind me again why the Wii needs to be able to play MP3s? That's not something that's even a consideration (for me) when choosing a game console...I plan on playing with my Wii, not listening to it. Wait, that didn't sound right...

I love the custom soundtracks on the 360, it's easy as just selecting the MP3 or playlist from my network and stream it. When in game all the soundFX still play and it's supported in just about every single 360 game. Now that I've used it, I can't imagine not having it. Playing music through your stereo and then playing the game is totally ghetto! With the 360 it's like you've created the game soundtrack. Maybe the Wii will add it in the future.

I'm pretty sure my launch Wii is gonna work though. That's a lot more than most launch 360 owners could claim and damned if the PS3 has more than 2/3 systems functioning properly at launch. To test that theory I guess people would have to buy games for it...

THIS IS NO PROBLEM.
everyone has their own type of music play ie a PC or cd player or Ipod or whatever.. this is absolutly no problem and pointless!

and.. even if u are whining and REALLY want this feature, wait a few weeks after release because its going to be in a firmware update.

@72 rofl

Come on guys, this is just joystiq's annoyance section for each of the new consoles. This seems like an annoyance to me. I'm never goign to use a Wii to play mp3s, but if I wanted to, it would annoy the crap out of me to have to do it like that. That's all it is, an annoyance, it isn't going to make or break the purchase as annoyances never do. Not only that, bringing up the annoyances in a public forum has a higher chance that this annoyance will be dealt with.

Oh wait! I forgot... Fanboys... ZOMG JOYSTIQ IS DUMB!

Its a shame there is limited support for multimedia built into the Wii. The Opera browser does add some, thanks to the embedded flash player, but its pretty crappy for videos. Streaming music and viewing photos works well though and I've found an easy way to transfer files to the wii (rather than by sd-card) is by http://wetwii.com I'm sure there will be many similar solution later on.
