1) Joystiq, please choose a different poll site. Most common hosts files found on the internet block the sparklit community. Probably for good reason.

2) There is NO way that many of us aren't planning to buy a PS3. I'm not planning to, there's a chance I will but I'd have to be really swayed and I don't see that happening. I didn't buy a PS1. I didn't buy a PS2, but my roommates have 3 (2 don't work) and I've used them for the few games I like. Up until Katamari, though, the Playstation 2 didn't have a single game I really wanted to play that other systems didn't. Since a few more have come out (Okami, God of War, Shadow of the Colassus).
So no, I don't have real intentions of getting a PS3. But I might.
And I'd imagine a ton of people here will have one next Christmas.

I had dinner last night with my cousin who was in the DC area for business and she has a 13 year old son (let's call him Johnny). Johnny has an Xbox and a PS2 and this past summer he mentioned that he'd prefer to get the PS3 over the 360.

Anyway, at dinner I made a comment about Johnny probably wanting the PS3 for Christmas. She responded by saying, Johnny told her not to worry about it, he felt the PS3 was way too expensive and not worth the money. (I guess he didn't know about the launch price this past summer.)

Yes, he is a good kid, but I wonder, even when more PS3's are available, will this be common thinking.

I love how everyone in the comments for this post talks about how "anti-SONY/Pro-Nintendo" Joystiq is, and any time Joystiq mildly criticizes the Wii everyone starts screaming about an "anti-Nintendo" bias.

When are all these idiot readers going to understand that Joystiq has some anti-Nintendo employees and some anti-Sony employees? HOLY SHIT NOT EVERYBODY AT JOYSTIQ HAS THE SAME OPINION ON ALL THE SYSTEMS OMGGGGGG!!!!

dear frenchy...
here in the states, most of us dont make 6figs or even half. so when the "most of us" want to buy something, it means its really worth buying. it means that it has str8 up and down enticed us into buy. most of the ppl who are going to buy the ps3 are

a. misinformed about the system
b. ppl who dont read the news about sony
or
c. little kids.

only the little kids who dont care about what ppl say about something will force their whiny card and get the ps3 at all cost. i can garunDAMNtee that most of the ppl that have heard the news of sony are kids who dont work.
e.g. "i dont care if the lolly pop is dirty give it to me!!!" lil' kid who has been told some bad news(sony problems and their consumer interest) about the lolly pop(sony)

the other ppl are those that have all the money to spend and they dont need to worry about next months rent. everyone in between is just going to either wait or not buy it. the only ppl that will wait are the ones buying it for the exclusives. who's gonna buy a ps3 for the exclusives when the exclusives arent out yet??? ive heard great things about resistance fall of man but the single notion that it, along with maybe 3 more, is the only game that interests me from the ps3 does not justify the money im spending.

ps3 games that i want
resistance
mgs4
ff13
god of war(havent even played the first one)

360 games i want/have
doa 4
gow
kameo was awesome!!!
halo3
splinter cell double agent
lost planet
forza 2
phantasy star

and those are just the exclusives for 360 this year(except halo, but even ps3 fans want that!!!)

and here are the universal games
nfs carbon
all the call of duties
fear
sonic
tomb raider
and a whole lot more i cant think off the top of my head

now this list is made to show how little the ps3 really means to most of us. see im not a fanboy, nor a hater. i have a uber pc, my 360 gamecube and ps2. if you compare these games to the ps3 games, then youll see theres not much reason to get a ps3.

oh and >,...your and idiot.

Wii - Got it preordered. It's really the only console I can afford at this point and really has the best potential to bring forth new innovative gameplay. Plus as an added bonus, it's something that could get my non-gamer friends to play.

360 - Games like Oblivion, GoW, and Halo are very tempting titles, but I can't see myself paying $400(If you're gonna buy it, go big) for those three titles. When the price drops $100 and there's a few more titles I'll probably spring for one.

PS3 - This is a tough one because of one simple game: FFXIII. Depending on how the game goes(awesome I hope), I will probably have to buy this system. The one thing holding me back is the price. Not of the console itself, but all the necessary components to fully experience what the ps3 has to offer. This is a big problem as I see it for the ps3. Most of the lesser expensive HDTV's run at 720p, not the much hyped 1080p. This means that as time progresses and the hdtv's come down in price, the 720p might sit at say $500 and the 1080p might sit at say $1000. The amount of tv's running at 1080p will not be anywhere near the amount running at 720p because the average consumer will not be able to tell the difference and buy the less expensive model.

For me personally the PS3 price point is the obstacle. I understand that XBOX 360 plus the HDDVD is the same, however with the PS3 I do not have a choice to exclude the blue ray player. If PS3 was $400, with a Blue Ray add on for $200, I would buy the PS3 for $400 and have both a XBOX360 and a PS3. Hope I made sense to you all.

I hear so many hang on to the PS3 for games like FFXIII & MGS4.

Fact is with a poor install base guaranteed to happen now, with Wii in Japan, and Wii & XBox 360 everywhere else, Sony's gonna LOSE both of those games.
Not just loss of exclusivity but Total Loss just like what happened with some titles already on PS3 & titles at the end of the Dreamcast's life.

Money talks and bullskit walks. Let's be real.

3rd party is leaving Sony this gen, folks.
When those titles put the "Et Tu Brute?" in Sony's back Sony is out of the business. They ain't Nintendo and can't survive off of their 1st party. They ain't even Sega.
I see it crumbling down permanently for Sony's game division by or within 2009.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will NOT see a Playstation 3 release & it's doubtful that Final Fantasy XIII will stay on that system either.

PS3's will collect dust & cobwebs all through 2007.
3rd party will be fed up & out of the need to make money & keep their franchises viable they will go to the competition.

In Japan, Nintendo will own the entire country lock stock & barrel. DS & Wii run wild in Japan like Hogan on Macho Man all gen long.
What happens in Japan spreads throughout the world as almost ALL of the developers come out of that region.

Wii hurts them outside of Japan too ALONG with XBox 360 as a thorn in their side. A vampire on their neck.

People just ain't looking at the reality here.
But soon enough they'll realize it.
I'm just trying to prepare 'em.

I'm anti-Sony because I have spent alot of cash on stuff from them that had arbitrary limits on the proprietary hardware that was later dropped and no longer supported or severely restricted.
After getting burned with my TH55 (a great unit, but no further support and an arguably dead/dying OS) and disappointed with the PSP and bored by the PS2 in that order.

No such experiences with Nintendo, or even MS.
I'd be a Halo freak if I could just learn the damn controllers...

I have a Wii on preorder because I love multi-player games, but most of my friends are non-gamers so I need something that I can actually get them to play. Games like Wii Sports/Warioware/Pangya would be perfect for that (the Gamecube also had many non-gamer-friendly multi-player titles). I'm also a huge DS fan so I look forward to the inevitable Wii/DS connectivity (Pokémon FTW)

PS3? I need to give it time. I really don't care about Sony's corporate BS (I don't feel they're really not any worse than Nintendo used to be or Microsoft always has been) but I'm skeptical of the high development costs - I fear they'll choke the PS3 just like they choked the PSP.

Remember that the Wii's biggest competitor is not the PS3, it's the PS2. The PS2 has a huge install base, still has great games coming out for it, and I think many "John Q Public" users are quite happy with their systems (at least the ones that don't have a disc read error) ^_^

Even the DS provides competition to the Wii - albeit less direct. Most gamers have limited budgets and will only buy a limited number of games per year.

Some of you guys dont get the numbers..

- 1 in 2 Joystiq readers owns a 360 (lets say 50 +/-10% to be generous)
- the relative install base of 360 compared to 'any-console' very small < 5% .. lets say 5% to be generous

Thus, the representation of 360 owners on Joystiq is approximately 10x what it is in reality (in terms of relative install base). And, so, people are fooling themselves if they think that the opinions expressed on joystiq represent reality.

I really see that MGS4 not coming out on PS3 loll let me laugh, but i'm pretty sure it will be released on the x360 with 6-9 month delay. for FF13 pretty sure it will be PS3 only, but that does not matter, I intend to buy a wii and even maybe a 360 if there are enough exclusive for it, multiplatform i'll be fine with the ps3 and I'm buying it mostly for the blu-ray player until some decent RPG or adventure (silent hill-RE5) comes out(not like the majority of the ps3 buyers). If it fails as a gaming platform i'll still have my BR player. If the X360 fails (very unlikely I agree) will be left with nothing(the hd dvd add on is not even ICT compliant and cost 200$ more than the 20gig PS3 in canada) My PS2 has still a lot to offer for gaming, still have about 80 games to finish (mostly RPGs and action adventures, playing FF12 at the moment) I do not even intend to buy Resistance I do not like FPS. The only game I would have bought would be oblivion that is delayed, I will be using my PS3 as a BR player till january no games interest me in the launch line up (too bad motorstorm has been delayed as well, i will probably play the demo when it is available). ANd yes I will have it, it's been p-o at TRU(canada TRU were making PO in feb-mar 06 with the Wii still called revolution back then) since feb06, 1st in line(in fact there was no line).

John Lucas - Yesterday I just had a long talk about video games with a Japanese friend who was just in Toronto for a few days. I was interested to get a non-media report of the gaming atmosphere in Japan. While none of what he said surprised me, it was nevertheless interesting to hear:

1. He seemed to feel somewhat sorry for Sony. He said they've had a very difficult year, but many Japanese are still optimistic about the chances of the PS3.

2. The DS is still hard to get; you can't just walk into any store and buy one, you have to scout one out and talk to a few places before you can find one available. From how he spoke, the fluctuations in DS sales from week to week seem less to do with demand and more to do with supply (in other words, Nintendo sells DSes just as fast as they can make them).

3. There is a very high expectation for the Wii, but opinion is divided over who will be the "winner" of the next-gen wars: Nintendo or Sony. He said Nintendo's reputation has fallen greatly in recent years but many believe they are about to regain the respect they once had.

4. I asked him about the XBOX360 and he didn't really have an opinion - he didn't seem to even really know what the 360 is. It seemed very clear that in Japan the 360 is an "also-ran" at best.

Oh, another bit - I don't know his sources, but he seemed totally convinced that Dragon Quest IX is coming out for the Wii. I've tried to find confirmation of this but so far no luck.

If it's true, then the Wii sales in Japan will skyrocket, because there are far more Dragon Quest freaks in Japan than Final Fantasy freaks (even my friend, he said he hasn't enjoyed a Final Fantasy game since FF5).

#56 - you can get an xbox 360 for $100 less now. Microcenter is offering a $100 rebate on the 360.

#63 - I had the same thought. Since 51% of the folks here have an xbox, its no surprise that most are not considering a PS3 at this time. I certainly can't justify spending another $500 (plus games and accessories) for a second console that is not much different from what I already have.

Anyone that says that I'm not going to buy a PS3 just b/c I have a 360 is right. Not b/c I'm some mindless fanboy, but because right now there's just no incentive. Resistance is not a $700 game. That's the cost of the system and game after tax for those of you that don't get that. If there was no impending format war then I'd be inclined to buy the PS3 for gaming and it's blue-ray player. I personally won't own a PS3 until Sony can convince me to spend my hard earned money on a console on which 95% of the games can be found on the 360. That, my friends, is the advantage MS gained by releasing early. To say that people on Joystiq are MS biased b/c we own a 360 is just stupid. But that's fine. One of you PS fanboys can buy my PS3 when I put it on eBay this weekend.

Sony Fanbois,

How, when someone blogs about a news article written by a journalist not associated with said blog regarding a potential shortfall/problem/lack of customer support/concern regarding the Playstation 3, does that blog site become anit-Sony?

You guys read the headline, jump into the comments page and commence to flame away. Read the SHORT PARAGRAPH summarizing the article that was written by someone else, then maybe even, oh I don't know, READ THE F*CKING ARTICLE ITSELF.

Not only that, if MS, Sony or Nintendo is doing something that does not benefit the gaming community, Joystiq is here to let the community's voice be heard.

Ever hear of the gripe that is the Xbox Live EA Microstransactions? Joystiq helped pressure EA for a justification.

How do you think Sony finally decided to add HDMI cables to the 20GB PS3? Probably because consumers bitched that they would be hampering their touted tru-HD gaming maching by not allowing the tru-HD 1080p signal thru to HDTVs. If everyone went, "Yes, Sony. thank you, Sony. May I have another, Sony." Then all you people that could only get a 20GB PS3 would never enjoy 1080p while watching a Blu-Ray movie because it would be BLOCKED thru component.

F8CK. If you don't like the news, then don't read it.

I am going to start telling CNN that they are anti-American because they report on corruption in the government. Well, they must be anti-American if they are reporting it using your ass-backwards logic.

Joystiq, please stop allowing these ignorant, flaming fanbois to post on this site.

The virtual console news (no online multiplay, no full library of 1st-party games at launch) put me off on the Wii. The PS3's price tag put me off on it (I voted Never because 2008 would be a year or two too early without some hella significant price cuts).

The 360 closest to what I want, and I'll only go there when the games I want to play stop coming out for the PS2, or if I get a true HDTV before I decide to get a PS3. There's just not enough separation between it and the PS2 in quality of games, and yes, I've played Gears of War and Dead Rising. Thank you 'Stiq for overhyping them so much - otherwise I would have bought them instead of being afraid that these games were getting so much hype because they weren't that great, corporate has a sales target and our marketing budget is so big that we can even send Joystiq a bunch of free crap.

Really, portable gaming is where the excitement is at for me right now. Other than Guitar Hero 2, I've played more DS/GBA/PSP in the last year than anything else.

The PS3 is overhyped and over priced.
The X-box 360 seems to match the graphicial power of the PS3, has a great online service, and will be starting the " on Demand" Hi Def movie downloading service soon. In other words, why would anyone spend all that extra money on a PS3 when the 360 seems to match it in every aspect. There will be few exclusive games, making both consoles more or less the same.
Except for price. With the money you save buying a 360, you can also buy the Wii! The 360/ Wii combo is the way to go!!

1. Compare consoles to consoles, not to cars.
2. The Wii has only "1 good game" because it hasn't even launched yet. Killer apps generally don't come all at once.
3. The newness of a company to the gaming market is completely irrelevent in itself.
4. Sony may have been "king when it comes to games" last generation, but whether that will hold true for the PS3 remains to be seen.
