Scott, it depends on where you are actually. I live 35miles from São Paulo and there are little problems with crime here. I am 21 and never got robbed, thats a good sign I suppose.

Hello.

I'm not totally surprised with the ignorance of some people here. I'm Brazilian, and I worked at Disney this holiday season. Met some quite WONDERFUL people, sure, and some bad apples. But one thing most of them had in common: NO KNOWLEDGE whatsoever about South America. I don't know if it is a problem with the educational system, maybe Geography isn't taught well enough in most parts of the USA.

What happens is, Brazil is a diverse country above all. It has the 9th largest GDP (PPP) in the world. Its population (like yours) is mostly formed of a mix of cultures, including millions of immigrants after WWII from all over Europe and Japan, plus the traditional Iberian and African blood still predominant. In South America, Brazil is a stabilizing force, along with Argentina, against somewhat unstable governments like Venezuela's.

Corruption is common in the government, but not to the point of creating huge problems (just like you have in your congress); Our president is somewhat ignorant, and most educated people can't stand him, but he was elected by his faithful followers (quite Bushy, in fact :)

She-males are as common here as in the rest of the world, but maybe because Brazil's plastic surgery is the best in the world, they're more famous... And for some reason the Brazilian porn industry made them stars, and the heterosexual porn here is low in quality. And AIDS is NOT a problem here, it is not epidemic. Got us confused with some African countries. And Brazil's government has the best program in the world to fight the disease. If you are a citizen and gets AIDS, you can get the full drug package FOR FREE, along with the necessary medical attention and exams.

Now, the monkey jokes always get to me. When I was learning English some years ago I usually chatted a lot using Yahoo chat, and people kept asking me if I HAD PROBLEMS with monkeys. I had to explain that I live in Sao Paulo, one of the biggest cities in the world, and completely monkey-free. Tigers, also, were a hot topic, despite the fact that tigers are not native to any of the Americas. We have jaguars (as the US does), but they don't roam cities ever. In fact, we have NO native animals that cause city dwellers any trouble, like you have with bears and raccoons in some areas.

And E85, or ethanol, is great. Nobody cares about it in the USA? That's fine? The USA is the largest polluter in the world, and my biggest hope is that your new congress will come to senses regarding that. Ethanol is MUCH cleaner than gasoline, because of the carbon offset it creates with the sugarcane plantations that are used to make ethanol here. It is not economically feasible today in most of the US, but if you imported it from Brazil, it would be cheaper than gasoline at your pumps. My car uses E85 exclusively, and I save around US$70 a month compared with the same model using gasoline. And all newer cars use both fuels, intermixed, to make then more flexible. Plus, 90% of Brazilian cars are MUCH more energy efficient. Our roads are not cluttered with one-passenger SUVs, thankfully.

Violence here is a big problem in some small areas, especially in the poorer slums in Rio, and the rest of Brazil gets the blame it doesn't deserve. Violence in Sao Paulo is not so much above average for bit cities worldwide; a string of civil unrest incidents we had here this year was not unlike the burnings in Paris last year. And southern Brazil has European living standards for the most part.

Now, I'm sorry if this got so long and defensive, but I don't like xenophobia. I hate it, in fact, and it is way too common in the US. US teenagers, unfortunately, are getting more and more alienated today, and that is sad, doesn't bode well for the future of your country. And I love the US, Disney was the best experience in my life, and American cinema is often my favorite. But these kinds of comments make me sad, the realization that too many people there live completely insulated from reality, and content to be so.

Finally, X360 here will be a VERY limited product. Because of the ridiculous import taxes, and Microsoft's greed also, it will retail for R$2999, almost US$1400. That's unreasonable. The game companies blame Brazil's pirates for the high prices, but if they are not going to at least try to offer a realistic price, the vicious circle will never end. People justify their pirated copies saying the originals are ridiculously expensive, and the game retailers answer by raising prices to raise profit... Who can afford to pay the equivalent of US$140 for each Wii game?

Well, I'm tired of typing. Bring on the flaming! Who will take the first shot at the Brazilian? Please, try and use the worst offensive words possible, so that anyone sensible reading this will contrast my tempered remarks against the insults that are to come, and draw some conclusions :)

Great rant, Fuhlendorf, really. I wished some people weren't so stupid about our country. I am Brazillian and live in Porto(RS), and I've grown accoustomed to everyone going to Uruguay and similar places to get their consoles cheap. Still, I lived 4 years in the US, and I always got irritated when it was said that every person in the US had at least one gun at home or when the whole population was based on their president, and this is what the US citizens do to repay? That's almost confirming their ignorance of anything that isn't part of what they call America that we all know is just a piece of North America plus some stolen territories.

Moral: Stop being such boneheaded idiots, you're fueling your own stereotypes.

Hello! I am a Brazillian, i'm not soo good in English, but i'll di my best.
I live in Mogi das Cruzes, a city in the state of Sao paulo and about 60 KM from the city of Sao Paulo. In the 1st of december xbox 360 was lauched officialy im Brazil, and I have acquired one in a internet store, and I will receive it in 3 days, at top. I dont have R$2999.00 (about U$1400), but I'll be paying it divided for the next 12 months. That's is one of the positive things of a Official Xbox 360. So, I am very ansious to get mine.
About my contry, we do not live in the middle of a jungle, as many people may think of Brazil, and just because I live out of city of Sao Paulo it doesn't mean that I live with the monkeys. As where told before by the brazillians above, the South part of Brazil is more advanced than the North, but of couse there are cities there that's an exception, like Natal.
I always thinked that the US is an Brazil more desenvolved. The cultures are similiars, a mix of races. the both countries have violence. But one thing that's negative that Brazil doesn't have is the Natural catastrophies, with all the respect, tornados, no, vulcans, no, hurricanes, no, earthquakes, no. So, in my opinion, Brazil it's a great place to live, and it can be more great if the Government would more eficapable.
Thank's.

FreeKssê, let me tell you a simple thing: improve your english substantially before entering such discussions in these american sites.

Otherwise, you'll get all kind of abuse from members who don't even know how to spell most words in their mother tongue, but are glad to flame anyone who is not a native English speaker. And they'll use those lame arguments to portray us as babbling buffoons.

So, study English a little better and then argue against xenophobia, but not before.

And a note: we don't have any volcanoes in Brazil, and SURELY not a single Vulcan. Live long and prosper!
