If anyone has ever been into one a LAN network PC gaming cafe, two things will hit you instantly: firstly that everyone in the room is an absolute nerd, and secondly that any female walking into the room would (aside from being surprised by the smell) be stared at like some rare and never-before-seen creature (given that there is a map transition, as otherwise everyone is glued to the screens and thier nieghboors). It is not offensive to say so. Sure, there are some female gamers who play FPS's and join hardcore clans... but compared to the male gaming population... well, frankly, there isn't a comparison. Female gamers are on the rise, but it's still a predominatly male market. I don't doubt that women can game. When my sister played games (around when I first got into them)she was significantly better than I was, but left gaming as school got more time consuming, as well as in pursuit of more artistic interests (I try to juggle music, games, reading, school, reading, soccer and more reading and time fills up fast). I can't sew, and I'm an abhorant knitter, but if I actually pulled out some yarn more than once every two years I'd be as competant as any woman knitter. Yet, though the mal knitting population is growing, and the knitting population as a whole is not enormous, a larger PERCENT of it consists of women. Does that mean my grandmother is inherently better at it? No. Am I offending any one by saying this? Sadly yes, I'm likely offending a good number of small minded people.
Long commentShort (little late for that): there is nothing offensive in suggesting that fewer women game. It's a fact. There is nothing offensive in saying the US gets more illegal immigrants from Mexico than Canada. Fact. Nintendo is suggesting quite the opposite from what the article accuses them of. Nintendo is (humorously, the first part of the article makes this later contradicted point)accepting the female demographic as a viable gaming market, and is telling the to come on in, the water's fine. Making the Wii less hardcore isn't what intices female gamers, it's what intices all non-gamers.
Let us return to Algebra: x=girls y=boys (little biology too), g=gamers, p=people. If g=x+3y, and P=10.5x+9.5y, P-g=Non-gamers= 9.5x+6.5y. 6.5NG(y). I have now proven that given more male gamers than female gamers, and a M/F ratio of approximately 50/51, there are more female non-gamers than male non-gamers. Therefore, to target non-gamers, a larger population of your target will consist of women. Fact.
Jokes aside, Nintendo isn't sexist anymore than the phrase "Our troops are plenty smart" proves our President is himself posessing plenty of intelligence.

I am what you would call a hard core gamer. I am also a 35yr old mom. I am a guild master on World of Warcraft. I also play consol games- those I prefer horror games like Silent Hill, Resident Evil etc. I also like first person shooters- Halo, Half Life- Doom. Hubby's also a hard core gamer and we have a lot of fun with it.
I think it's great that Nintendo is reaching out to women I just hope they don't come out with a pink Wii and think that's gonna attract us more it might to the fluffybunnies but well... I'll leave it at that.

I'm female and I love my video games. I'm absolutely addicted to Kingdom Hearts and Jurassic Park Operatin Genesis(the latter for involving dinosaurs and letting you release them to eat people).

What annoys me is that they think marketing "easier" games to women will attract them. It's not that they think they're too hard, it's that they aren't interested.

Well, there's my two cents.

Honestly, if I see video games specifically marketed to women that are supposed to be easier, I wouldn't give them the time of day. I am a female who has been playing video games right along with the guys for many years now and I am one of those people who apparently doesn't bring enough money to Nintendo to get recognized as a group to market to. I admit that there are women who don't give video games the time of day, but it's insulting to the ones who have played for years and are very good players. I want to play hard games with kick butt graphics, so if I saw something like this picture above with some girl in pigtails playing it, I would dismiss it as being for children and I would find something made for adult hardcore gamers. In this way, Nintendo pushes away female gamers like myself.
I find it odd that they would put women in a category with older people and children. It's easy to see why older people and children wouldn't have the skills for video games. Either they are new to the world or they grew up in a time before people played video games. But women? How can they be put into the same category when they are half the population? The only reason I can think of is if you have to play the game with your penis. Then women are at a definite disadvantage.
It's so simple, a woman can play it? Like I said, if a game was simple, I would dismiss it as being for children. I guess if they would just emphasize that it is a good system for non hardcore gamers, I would be okay with that but to assume that women are not already hardcore gamers is insluting to the women who are.

I feel female gamers (like myself) are not given enough respect by male gamers. The fact that at a video game store I am treated like an uneducated ape is annoying and very childish. I am however, happy that Nintendo is atleast trying to make female gamers welcome. I do agreee though that they have a long way to go.

I guess you could call me a hardcore female gamer. I don't identify myself as this, but I am sitting here playing my DS while I read this. My first console was the sega master system when I was like... 7? either way this is really blown out of proportion.

I literally just saw a Wii commercial, and I didn't see any negative stereotypes that indicated womem have issues with controllers. It just looked like they were having fun, which is the whole point.

Culturally though, it's not really kosher for chicks to like videogames, it's been ingrained in us from birth really, like pink and blue. Trucks and dolls. Makeup and videogames. I think it's actually pretty progessive to start making strides to involve women more, despite it only being to gain more green.

I love my DS and I love my Wii, my ps2, my gamecube, genesis and so on. But I'm not the norm, and you can't call sexist or agist because of the fact that it *ISN'T* the norm for women to be gamers. Nintendo is making an effort and while in the beginning it might be a bit misguided, they will come through in the end. They're Nintendo for christ's sake.

I'm not to entirely sure how I feel about being considered a "secondary player," i almost feel that they have every right to think of us in that manner. WE are far too busy doing other stuff like slaving in the kitchen over a HOT stove or Waddling' around the house somewhere knocked up to take the time to sit down and play. Who knows maybe it's just the way they've experience culture OVER THERE but over here.. THAT SH*T DON'T FLY! This article could have been true 10 yrs ago. The female rise in video games is increasing, this argument is futile just like the female in the rock/metal genre is. Its stupid, at least women are being considered gamers now, Microsoft and Sony havent even tried to reach a different audience besides the stereotypical teen angst male whom hates the world and uses video games. I am all for violent video games but I like the Nintendo systems for all the fun party games, Mario Party, Super Mario Bros, they are games you can play and enjoy watching others play. This article is now leaning more towards parody and farce rather than truth.

Nintendo is about gaming for everyone. Publicly announcing the active inclusion of females and older generations as target marketing demographics should not be misconstrued as an underhanded insult.

I doubt the author of this column has even seen the videos presented at E3 and Nintendo's website. They featured a very broad range of players. Half, if not most of these players were women; HAVING FUN with friends, relatives, and significant others, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

I would be willing to wager that the author of this column has never laughed out loud with a friend so hard that they were required to pause the game they were playing. If the author has, I would also be willing to bet that said game was not of the fighting genre. My point: Does the author even play games that much?

This column is base.

My girlfriend would agree.
Her devotion to video games rivals my own.
She's no newbie.

We are both getting a Wii, and both think that the PS3 is the biggest rip-off in the history of video games.

Another thing I've seen in the comments: Gamers should not be assumed to be slobs and lazy husbands or boyfriends. I love my girlfriend with all my heart, and we do practically EVERYTHING together. I will never be one of these stereotypical guys who sit on their duffs while the lady of the house works her nails to the quick. A gamer can be anyone; male of female. We are not all pig-headed, unsanitary men. Many of us gamers are women and older folks who just don't have anything appealing to play.

That's I love Nintendo. Other companies support games that force the player to sit alone for untold hours, neglecting their health, etc., while Nintendo ENCOURAGES people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds to sit--and now get up--and play TOGETHER.

It's time people realize this.

If you're a male, don't bash female gamers. They just might kick your virtual ass. Instead, males should be more inviting and encouraging, but on a sincere level. As a guy, I would much rather be sitting NEXT TO a very attractive girl whom I invited to play, rather than be scoffed at, BY an attractive girl whom I insulted.

If you're a female, don't just complain that girls don't get enough attention in the gaming world... DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Don't hide!
I WANT TO SEE MORE FEMALE GAMERS. I find myself pondering about where they all are, quite frequently.

I'm male, by the way.

What a joke! I am a woman and play as many games that come out regardless of how "hard" it is. Resident Evil, Fear, Dead or Alive 4, Need for Speed Carbon. My selections run the gambit. The only thing I would like to see is that in the Need for Speed games they would allow you to play as a male or female. All I can do is design my car to be something I would drive but I feel sorry that a male character is driving a pink car.

I am a guy and here is my opinion on this: Women tend to have different likes than men, but i dont think that strictly marketing to women in a "femanine" way is the key to good advertisement. Women ARE capable of finding interest in games that men enjoy. However, most of the women i have met in my life have more priorities than just sitting around and playing games. Maybe try designing a game that would fit into "her" way of life, but not make "her" feel like she is a bumbling bimbo. Women are just as intellegent as men if not MORE and i feel they should be treated as such.

Kudos to "All your lost socks" for making those great points!! I am a female geek, in all aspects essentially, I repair people's computers, I enjoy comics, Sci-Fi, action movies, I play video games, go to conventions and I even played Magic: The Gathering. I've been playing console games since the original NES, and have gotten a few more of the systems since then...I currently have a DS and an X-Box (in addition to my 2 computers), and I'm planning on getting the Wii...why? Not because it's "easier"...but because

1) it's less expensive, and as a college student, I have a limited income and things like oh...bills to pay before I can even think about any of these cool things I WANT.

2) I don't have an HDTV...again the financial issue, and I don't watch enough TV to justify that expense (TV card and DVD-RW on my PCs...), which means the 360 and the PS3 are pretty pointless.

3) I miss my old school games that I grew up with!! I can DL the original NES games, some Genesis, and TurboGrafx 16!!! How awesome is that!?

and for those guys that say women don't play the "male" geared video games...try again! I LOVE games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, BeatDown etc! I've also loved the RPG games (particularly Knights of the Old Republic) and even games geared towards kids...it's all about having fun, or in the case of the violent games, at least getting to virtually beat the crap outta someone...

I personally haven't seen anything that I'd see as "sexist" from gaming ads, probably because I wasn't noticing what gender anyone was...I was just thinking "OOOOH I WANT IT!! *drool*"

My last note/point...whoever said women weren't as good in science or math as men, was misinformed...the reason the test scores were down so much is because of that stereotype actually...women generally weren't given as many opportunities to excell in those areas...for many reasons (societal influences, lack of attention paid to their interests...whatever). I'm one of those women who does FAR better at math and science than any social science!! In fact, I was majoring in physics for 2 years.

I'm not a feminazi or anything like that...I just go about my business and do my own thing, but a lot of stereotypes in general annoy me.

I'm off my soapbox now :)

I'm a female, and I have played video games my whole life. I was given the original Nintendo when I was four years old. I played and played and played over the years, but when I started high school games were not a priority by any means. Kids in general (boys or girls) will be attracted to video games regardless. Now many of the popular games out there (such as World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy, Guild Wars, Halo, Grand Theft Auto) have reached their status by an overwhelming fan base. Very seldom do I know a female that's actually hardcore into the games.

Yes, times are changing and with that more females are entering the game age, but I don't believe it's totally fair to call this advertising, or game play in general "sexist". It seems like more girls that I know, that are actually into games, are into the games such as Tetris, brain teasers, trivia, and light playing plotted games such as Mario, Kirby, and Sonic. Some females just may have a lower patience and desire to play heavily-plotted games. Whereas all the guys I know can't get enough hours logged into World of Warcraft, or cannot put down Final Fantasy until it is absolutely done with. However, RPG's such as these do prove popular amongst females. I believe this is because (for example) Final Fantasy posesses strong female characters. Therefore, a character better to relate too. These characters carry not just physical strength but a heightened emotional and moral conscience, along with confidence. This is something, I believe, many female gamers search for. Sadly though, it's just there in the greatest amount as leading-male character games.

Finally, Tomb Raider: Lara Croft is it's namesake: the leading lady of the game is also the title, however, some female gamers may find her to be more man-like in her abilities and virtues. This cannot be explained without mentioning her outstanding breast size; something that has been turned into sort of a joke over time and a hook for the male audience.

I just think male and female gamers need to get over it. The truth is just the truth, that's all it is. Quit getting so offended. If you want Wii and PS3 commercials to include more serious gamers in their advertisements, write them and ask them if you can be a serious participant in their advertisements. Other than that, chill out. After all, it's just a game.

I enjoyed the mindless banter of some of the comments the guys were posting. Women make up the majority of the consumer out there and this is just another product for people with the means to purchase them if they are interested. I never considered video gaming to have one gender. I've been playing since the original Atari was released in the 1970's. I have 5 children of my own and we have 3 seperate consoles and several handheld consoles and I'm familiar with them all. I play PS2 on a regular basis and I don't give a flip what some 'marketing research' has to say about whether a game or console is 'intended' for men or women. It's crap, people. I keep up with the current games because my kids love to play. My husband on the other hand finds most games boring and only plays first person shooting games, which are ok, but I enjoy Star Wars Battlefront II, Need for Speed and all sorts of 'non-girly' games. I especially got a good laugh out of post #25 - I bet he's lacking in the manly tool department and still lives with his mother!

I am a female gamer. And no, I don't play the "girly" games (aka CHILDREN'S GAMES). I think girls/women are starting to become more common in gaming communities, albeit not common enough. I run across other women in online games, and it is very refreshing. Marketing to women as "secondary gamers" doesn't really bother me, b/c if I like the game/console, I'm going to buy it no matter who they market it to...although I will get mad at the commercial :) And to tell you the truth, a woman (or even a man) who has never played a video game in their life, will less likely go out and buy a console to try it out. The noob players are going to be secondary gamers no matter their sex or age...women will play what they want to play and do what they want to do. Marketing in any degree won't change that. I just wish companies would stop making it difficult for actual women gamers to be taken seriously in a game because they are portrayed as secondary gamers. That's all.

As an older, female person 50+, I have to say it is NOT about the console or how easy it is to use. It's all about the game content. Women are not as interested in war an shooter games or zombies and stuff. That doesn't mean we want games about housework and crap like that. Give us intrige and thinking games mysteries to work out and less violent adventures.

I think this article is twisting things way too much. I have been a female gamer for about 20 years now. I love gaming. I actually like the fact that Nintendo is trying to include women!!! Why knock it. If they were like the other companies, they would continue marketing to the highest demographic (young males). I am not going to take it personal when they use thier marketing techniques because I know I'm not the normal female that they are marketing to. I'm just glad someone is finally trying to include females instead of it always being a guys domain.

I know several women engineers and not one of them is a gamer. It has nothing to do with math & science. If I wanted to put the time in, I too could be an expert gamer. I choose to be the occasional visitor to the gaming world. I'm a woman who just turned 30 and my husband is a serious gamer. It really means a lot to him that I play sometimes. I appreciate that he wants to include me. I think the new Nintendo marketing strategy is a good societal sign that gamers are growing up, getting married, starting families, and at the same time wanting to spend quality time with those families. The PS3 never hit my radar, but I find myself doing research on Wii games and am really excited to get started playing. It's the first console to make it into the living room instead of having to be downstairs :)

I think that Nintendo is acknowledging there is a female market, is a huge step in the direction of female gamers being recognized. Like look at Sony and Xbox. Ok, Sony will be releasing a pink PS2 in the future.

However, Nintendo has been the only company to date, to import female targeted games from Japan and sell them to American women.

I'm sure you're going "Great, a cooking game, a princess game, and a cute game..yes we're covered as far as stereotypes go". This is true, however, since I've been playing games, which has been from the early 80's on. I was born in 82, if that helps you get some perspective. They didn't even think there were female gamers.

Sure there were female little girls, who would play pedantic crap like Barbie supermodel for NES. However, all girls did in video games were wait to be saved. The company that did a 360 on that first, was Nintendo. They had The Princess of The Mushroom Kingdom be more tomboyish. Like, with Mario Kart, and the Mario Party games. They also re-introduced Daisy as the official tomboy princess. As well as introduced a female version of what most people call the Toads.

What does Sony have, a scantly dressed Bandicoot? Laura Croft? Give me a break! I personally like the Tamagotchi Corner Shop series for the DS. So I like cute, and freely admit it. So kick me. I think it's one of the most underrated series, and you know why. It's targeted at the female market!

It offers something other than waffling around in a pretty pink dress and saving Toads. Or sitting around wating to be saved. That scares the heck out of the male gaming audience. They want girlfriends who are gamers, but won't fight over the system. They also want to act immature about it, like "Ewww, gamer girls have cooootttiees!" The reality is, that time is over.

So Nintendo is equating the female gaming skill to the elderly. While I feel this could all very well, be a culture clash type of misunderstanding, between Japanese culture and American culture. The fact is Nintendo is the only company I know, out there saying..hey, women do play video games! They have money! You have to be an idiot not to take advantage of the market, wether or not you have some sexist ideals.

I think Nintendo has been at the forefront of pioneering as far as women being respected in the gaming world. Like, when Metroid was out..at the end of the game you found out it was a she not a he. I'm sure that threw alot of male gamers for a loop! They are like Hayao Miyazaki in the Anime world. They're an allie to female gamers. I think if anything we should give them our full support. So we can see them laughing when Sony and Xbox realized all the revenue they lost, by sticking to old dated ideals, that gaming is exclusively a boy's club.

I also want to mention, that there's a character in Tamagotchi Corner Shop 2. Her name is Ponytichi, in the bowling game she said at one point, "I won't let the boys beat me!" If that isn't saying it all, from the perspective of girls gaming, in what other companies like to consider a boy's world. Then I don't know what does.

Damn this feminist article. In most movies it's always a guy who screws up the relationship and the girl gets all emotional, almost never the other way around. It's Mother Nature, not Father Nature. The loving parent is always the mother, almost never the father. IF there is an abusive parent it's almost always the big bad dad.

Do you see a masculism movement bitching about all this? No, because we don't fucking care, you don't have to be so fucking sensitive about everything. My nieces enjoy Roller Coaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, The Sims, and other stupid simulator games, some of them like the multiplayer Nintendo Classics like SMB, Mario Party, Mario Kart, but hand them Metroid Prime and they'll dismiss it immediately as senseless and boy-ish. But all of them got a Nintendo DS, and half of them are pink, so I guess Nintendo's marketing is working...

My mother for example stopped playing video games after the SNES, she was pretty hardcore back then but she "grew up" and now dismisses video games as a waste of time. When she saw me playing Wii Tennis she thought "hey that's funny" and now she kicks my ass at Wii Tennis, it's not only that it's more simple but it's easier to pick up and play in short bursts, and short bursts is all the free time grown women seem to have... same goes for very busy men, although my dad and I enjoyed some of the best GoldenEye matches EVER, something I never had with my mom... he too ended up quiting video gaming later due to his job, sadly.

Teenager girls are too concerned with their image to play video games, but since all women seem to love doing the Sims giggling as they decorate the rooms of their Sims (often named after themselves), they are willing to pick that up. Anything social or simulator like seems to attract women, whereas lone gaming turns them off, that's just how I've experienced it.

It's a fact, lone gamer girls playing something other than solitaire, and a The Sims spin off are rare, so when Nintendo implemented Nintendogs advertising it to girls too, they were all over it, all my nieces have a copy! None of them would consider buying Metroid Prime Hunter's though.

The stereotype that gaming (or at least some forms of it) is for men only is what turns girls off, and if Nintendo is trying to break that stereotype you shouldn't be whining that you were outside that stereotype all along!
