PlayStation 3 Network live, Terms of Service loooooong!
Sony activated PlayStation 3's online network in North America this morning (it's been live in Japan since last week), in anticipation of tomorrow's launch. We'll let you know how it fares once we get through these Terms of Service...

He should actually read it. It might say something like "Upon this agreement, you agree to give us ownership or your life".
:P j/k

Who knows what's in there! You could be signing away your right to an attorney, for when they torture you. Which you also signed up for..
Paul @ Nov 16th 2006 12:35PM
At full speed that takes 15 seconds to get through... i cant imagine really reading that - does anyone have a copy of the full text? I am guessing you are ceeding LOTS of rights.
FSK405K @ Nov 16th 2006 12:32PM
Any news on how it compares to XBL or that Fire-something program?
concerned sony fanboy @ Nov 16th 2006 12:33PM
When will sony do anything right? Come on sony..
Ritz @ Nov 16th 2006 12:36PM
Someone should go and read through it and make a bullet point list for the rest of us who don't want to do what I suggest you do =D
qbix @ Nov 16th 2006 12:41PM
I wonder how that thing looks on a standard definition TV. Is it even readable?
UNSCleric @ Nov 16th 2006 12:41PM
Sony is such a corrupt company that those TOS could be anything. Don't forget that this is the company that put spyware on their CDs.
Uchendu Nwachukwu @ Nov 16th 2006 1:33PM
It's not surprising how long it is, given that it's three documents in one, Terms of Service (the terms upon which Sony agrees to provide service to you), the User Agreement (Rules you must abide by while using the service) and Privacy Policy (how information about you is collected, stored and used.)
Each one of those is going to be fairly long by itself.

"Sony is not held responsible if you encounter Giant Enemy Crabs on the world wibe web."

FWIW, the Xbox Live Eula:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/legal/legal-tou.htm
Code of Conduct:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/legal/codeofconduct.htm
Xbox.com TOS:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/legal/xboxComTOU.htm
Pages and pages full of legalese there too.
MMurdock @ Nov 16th 2006 12:44PM
It says to open box you must expose its weak point and then stab the security seal for massive damage.
Marty @ Nov 16th 2006 1:15PM
You're probably agreeing to some pretty nasty stuff in there, about sending data to their network about your pay habits and preferences for marketing purposes, etc.
On a side note, where's >? I know he's somewhere reading this right now, building up to a boiling rage about people having qualms with turning over their rights to Sony with a huge TOS agreement. Show yourself!
BklynKid @ Nov 16th 2006 12:53PM
And somewhere in there, you agree to never sue them when they install a rootkit.
GlitchCog @ Nov 16th 2006 12:52PM
Can you scroll through the text by tilting the sixaxis? That'd make it cooler.
Oro @ Nov 16th 2006 12:53PM
I don't understand companies. "People keep just hitting accept without reading our terms of service. I know! We'll make them scroll all the way down before they can hit accept! Surely they'll just read the terms of service now!"
Petterz @ Nov 16th 2006 1:00PM
Can somebody please tell me where he got his background music? I would like to download it.
LordMinogue @ Nov 16th 2006 1:03PM
Couldn't they just say:
"by accepting this agreement you forefit all legal rights regarding Sony products and accept that we can change anything we want, whenever we want"
I Accept - I Decline

when will we post something of more interest than toa for sony? Hey, I got it, lets talk about the violent crimes that should be on their hands for only releasing so few systems. Or we can talk about something of real interest like what all the fuss over blew ray disc and HD DVD, when we all know that digital media is where everything is heading. I saw the ps3 @ walmart and it is huge, and they talk about the size of the 360. The ps3 is nothing more than a hybrid 360 and wii put together and they could not even get that right. Now I and sure to sell my psp too and bootleg all sony movies, they get no money from me...... WOOOOOO WOOOOOOO
wupperbayer @ Nov 16th 2006 1:25PM
@Oro: Well, I don’t know if the companies really want the end user to read the full TOS – he can’t complain about something he doesn’t read.
So I think this forced scrolling is just some legal stuff so users can’t just accept the TOS (even accidentally) and at least have to quick-read them ;)
MrD @ Nov 16th 2006 1:55PM
It's not that long, I've had crappy online games with much, much larger TOS agreements.
Tambo @ Nov 16th 2006 3:04PM
I feel tricked, that was not long at all. Sony haters really sicken me.
James @ Nov 16th 2006 5:51PM
@#8: No, that wasn't spyware, it was a V-I-R-U-S. Actually a rootkit, but it pwns your system like one.
@#10: Zelda? This is a PS3 post!
Stavros @ Nov 16th 2006 3:27PM
I once heard a smarter man than I mention that the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill or Rights is not longer than 7 pages combined.
(note: could be slightly more or less, but way less than today's contracts...)
cameraman @ Nov 16th 2006 5:36PM
that really wasn't that long
peter7898m @ Nov 16th 2006 6:14PM
I am not a Sony Fanboy but Lengthy lisence agreements are normal, i have seen many games on PC at the installation process that are probably just as long. Its normal.
Rob @ Nov 17th 2006 10:20AM
@tambo - you aren't from the days of yore - I remember the TOU of Borland C++. One small page, large print, easily understandable without a lawyer.
Some1 @ Nov 19th 2006 11:28PM
You can hit the right directional button to move to the Accept button, past the TOS.
