PS3 campers shot outside Kentucky Best Buy
Hardcore just got a lot more hardcore. PlayStation 3 devotees camping outside of a Lexington, Kentucky Best Buy were showered with BB-gun pellets last night in an apparent drive-by shooting. The suspect, who is still at-large, even managed to peg a local news reporter interviewing one of the stationed hopefuls. No serious injuries were reported. As for motive, Engadget opines the shooter was bitter about missing out on a pre-order opportunity. Our guess, an Xbox

Next-gen cow-tipping!
Andy @ Nov 16th 2006 1:00PM
Yes, I do have a sense of humor, and I realize that there's no malicious intent behind the wording of this post, but mocking a drive by shooting by calling it part of some "console" war, seems to be especially mean spirited to the victims (who are probably your readers).
Naruhodou @ Nov 16th 2006 1:02PM
LOL
I don't know who's side to take. They were probably eBay scalpers anyway.
Hazywood @ Nov 16th 2006 1:02PM
pwned =)
Jack Thompson's worst fears realized. GTA inspired drivebys.
I'm gonna go continue laughing now.
BklynKid @ Nov 16th 2006 1:02PM
Serves 'em right for being idiots and camping outside a store all night.
SP @ Nov 16th 2006 1:03PM
I hope these people realize the need to get vest up before waiting in line for the PS3.
Fhaze @ Nov 16th 2006 1:06PM
The PS3 spawn point was littered with campers....
Kevin @ Nov 16th 2006 1:07PM
They should have used paint ball guns instead.
Danny @ Nov 16th 2006 1:11PM
damn nice pic, I was trying to find a good pic for this last night but I couldn't find anything - so i photoshopped a pic
NATO_Duke @ Nov 16th 2006 1:12PM

jc @ Nov 16th 2006 1:13PM
speaking of which... this site seems to be lacking it's normal level of Sony phanbois
Storm9 @ Nov 16th 2006 1:14PM
Just shows how jealous the 360 fanboys are :P
They have to settle for a shitty console instead of the awsome Ps3.
ViciousVariable @ Nov 16th 2006 1:16PM
11 (JC) - That's because they're camping. Seriously, I noted it too; both here and kotaku, the sony apologists are less than normal. That's the only explanation i could figure out.
JodyAnthony @ Nov 16th 2006 1:19PM
JC, enjoy it. It only comes once every 5 years.
Todd @ Nov 16th 2006 1:23PM
Wow, this is a new low. I suppose Sony will be pushing their PR into high gear in order to spin these violent events.
gok @ Nov 16th 2006 1:25PM
How do you know they weren't Nintendo fanboys? Or other Sony fanboys trying to eliminate competition?
Todd @ Nov 16th 2006 1:26PM
@Storm9
Actually, this act of violence is more than likely committed by a Sony fanboy pissed about getting is own PS3. Any 360 or Wii fan would likely stand outside the crowd and mock, only someone pissed about NOT getting the system would turn violent. If you're looking for someone to point fingers to, look around at the pissed off Sony fans who missed out!
devi8i @ Nov 16th 2006 1:26PM
Reporting on this incident is fine, making fun of an assault is appaling, especially when your image alt tag is "duck bitches!!!" Would teh editing staff of Joystiq want people to make similar remarks about their wife, mother, girlfriend being assaulted in a similar manner. Joystiq has really sunk to an all time low....is this just another example of the wonderful journalistic standards Joystiq keeps?
Danny @ Nov 16th 2006 1:31PM
devi8i - What else could you do in a situation like so, send out your regards to those people who may have a bruise on there shoulder from a freakin BB. Them campers should have whipped out there 'Battle Rifles' and 'Torque Bows' and taken care of that car. Wait a minute - there PS3 fans, they don't know about those types of weapons!
Dre @ Nov 16th 2006 1:33PM
This is sick. Going to jail over a console that you will not take home. This is just the beginning. How many folks will get robbed tonight before this horrible launch is over. Is it that serious that people are willing to hurt people on the first day of a new toy? Sony will produce more. Don't hate!
Marty @ Nov 16th 2006 1:39PM
BB Guns, bullets, etc. = bad.
Eggs, toilet paper, etc. = good. :D
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Nov 16th 2006 1:40PM
LMFAO!
"Duck Bitches!"
I don't care who you are, that's funny right there.
MrD @ Nov 16th 2006 1:41PM
Good God, it's just a BB gun. You're all using the words "victim" and such, like they actually got shot by real guns or something.
dan @ Nov 16th 2006 1:42PM
@ #7
lmao, you win everyone go home!
Draco @ Nov 16th 2006 1:43PM
This has to be the work of X-Box fanboys, they love their FPS' and there all whiney bitches that shriek there going to shoot you anytime you win a live game.
SlayerRB @ Nov 16th 2006 1:47PM
Getting shot by a BB gun is probably less painful than spending $600.00 on a PS3.
Geez, you could get a XBOX 360 and a Nintendo Wii for less than that price. In addition, not get shot while waiting for them.
The Wise old Man @ Nov 16th 2006 1:47PM
Maybe those BBs will knock some sense into the idiot Sony fanboys who are shelling out $600+ for a crippled gaming system. Aim for the eyes next time!
Steve @ Nov 16th 2006 1:48PM
Great article. Especially the last part, about the xbox soldiers. Mostly great responses, aside from the 12 year old ps3 fanboys.
justin @ Nov 16th 2006 1:52PM
Mario did it
32_Footsteps @ Nov 16th 2006 1:52PM
My first thought when reading the headline was, "Geez, hope those guys are okay."
My thought after reading the article was, "What kind of lame drive-by uses BB pellets?"
One ticket to Hell, please.
DWells55 @ Nov 16th 2006 1:55PM
Anyone who supports this kind of action is an absolute moron. That's assault, possibly with a dangerous weapon. It's also brandishing a firearm in public, as the use of airsoft guns in public carry the same consequences as regular firearms. I assume these were indeed airsoft guns, because otherwise the injruies would have been significantly worse. This is the kind of stuff that's going to get airsoft banned so legitimate players of the sport such as myself will be out of luck.
And don't think just because the crappy airsoft guns you've used that they are all like that. My 280FPS (feet per second) P90TR shoots 9RPS (rounds per second) with .2g ammo. That leaves some really nasty welts. My 380FPS Desert Eagle .50AE shoots a whopping 380FPS and is run off propane, semi-auto blowback. That thing can draw blood. At my friend's 430FPS Sniper Rifle is bolt-action, but believe me when I say you DON'T want that hitting you.
madato @ Nov 16th 2006 1:57PM
Strongly agree with #2
Way to be politically incorrect and offensive, Joystiq.
romeo @ Nov 16th 2006 2:01PM
It's only funny until someone gets their eye shot out.
moclippa @ Nov 16th 2006 2:03PM
Or a bunch of college students just got drunk/bored and decided to pick on the campers outside, seeing as they are such easy picking and the butt of jokes around the street as people pass by.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Nov 16th 2006 2:04PM
Politically incorrect & offensive?!?
Jesus, grow a pair would you guys? What a bunch of nancies. Joystiq isn't advocating this behavior. They are informing us that it happened. Then you "I'm too sensitive to violence" types start pointing fingers as though they are somehow responsible or perpetuating the incidents.
Politically incorrect?
That's so gay.
KaneRobot @ Nov 16th 2006 2:22PM
"The PS3 spawn point was littered with campers...."
Fhaze deserves a star for that. Let's make it happen, Joystiq.
DWells55, no one is impressed with your gun collection. Way to write an introductory paragraph for your real intent, which was to "show off" how cool you think you are.
Funny picture, funny caption. Don't listen to the whiners.
ger @ Nov 16th 2006 2:23PM
paintballing would have been way funnier esp. if they had hit the reporter while on air.
Thordis @ Nov 16th 2006 2:28PM
Haha people need to chill it's just BB guns, in my opinion if you were never shot with a BB gun you didn't have a childhood. Haha actually the other day I was drive-by BB'd right in the arm on my way to a party. Did I cry assault like a faggot? No, I pulled it out, and got a bandaid at the party to stop the bleeding.
The problem with people today is we all gate ourselves in our own little perfect house and perfect world and then anytime we actually have to deal with the real world we all just cry and get offended. The world would be a much better place if people stopped taking shit so seriously.
refinedsugar @ Nov 16th 2006 2:34PM
I know it's supposed to be all fun and jokes in the aftermath ... spin some silly twist on dangers of video games ... but this could have turned out badly. I'm glad everyone is alright. As for motive, I doubt the person responsible had any video game leanings ... probably just your typical a*hole.
mykie @ Nov 16th 2006 2:35PM
Hrm...I didn't know that Best Buy took EBT (food stamps) card.
Anyone camping out days in advance for a game console can't possibly have an actual job or any real responsibility.
Patel @ Nov 16th 2006 2:56PM
Darwin strikes again.
If you dumb enough to sit in line for a video game same, you deserve to be taken out of the gene pool.
The ZeroCorpse @ Nov 16th 2006 3:04PM
See? I told you the PS3 was ghetto-fabulous.
It's not a game console; It's bling.
Shibathedog @ Nov 16th 2006 3:25PM
it seems like wherever i move to, crazy game related news follows me, i used to live in michigan right by the meijer that sold halo 2 early, and now i live in kentucky pretty damn close to that best buy
i could list a whole bunch of other more recent examples but im sure you get my point
sirknz @ Nov 16th 2006 3:39PM
And Real time weapon change....
MrTroy @ Nov 16th 2006 5:02PM
Now... First let me say this... Fhaze that's some goodness right there. It took me a while to stop laughing at that.
Second. Guys... No one was hurt. That makes it ok to laugh. Didn't you get your playground rule book? I mean honestly it's a BB gun. It coulda-It coulda-It coulda. But it didn't. Therefore we can laugh.
(And I've been shot more than once due to teens and family members goofing off with BB guns. It's not bad)
Galaktix @ Nov 16th 2006 5:39PM
Something similar happened last night in Mishawaka IN. Everyone that was in line was held up and all their money and cell phones and other exspensive items were taken.
Oh yeah it sounds to me like some people here are kind of jealous they arent standing in line to get one right now.
Mike Patton @ Nov 16th 2006 5:45PM
It's only funny until someone gets hurt, and then it's just hilarious.
GoPodular @ Nov 16th 2006 5:54PM
They were trying to get everyone to scatter away from the doors... then their buddies could hop to the front of the line.
I second the motion for Fhase to get a star. #7 is good stuff.
Pulse @ Nov 16th 2006 5:58PM
You think this is funny, quite frankly its both dangerous and sick, whether its PS3 or not, its not the least bit funny, not one of you would like to be in tha same position, and with BB guns? If shot in the wrong place, it could have seriously injured or even killed. If you think this is humourous, you need to consider couseling.
Oh and the reason sites like these have less and less PS3 fanboys is most likly because most of us have other things to do, the next time you see some PS3 fans, they'll probs be posting from thier PS3s.
ackmondual @ Nov 16th 2006 6:05PM
THUS IS THE FATE OF FANBOYS OF PLAYSTATION 3
