Flashpoint: Sony Style in Boston
The scene of the most disorganized launch in the city of Boston is currently at the Sony Style store at the downtown Copley Mall. This follows the cancellation of the midnight Best Buy event, due to the overwhelming crowds that developed by late morning. As the rain pours down in Boston, with thunder and lightning accompanying, a couple hundred people devoted to purchasing a PS3 are left standing outside the mall. Two factions have sprung up and the tension is building. Alex Flores (pictured, with list) and his group have set up camp across the street after being kicked out of the mall, and then from the sidewalk outside the mall, earlier today. Flores says he arrived at 6AM and developed a list with people showing up later. By 10AM he delivered that list, with about 70 people on it, to the Sony Style manager and was told they wouldn't accept it. Flores and another PS3 owning hopeful, Ernesto Ramos, say the manager told them, "As long as we sell out, that's all we care about."
"They want chaos," says Flores. "We are trying to keep it organized."
Meanwhile, across the street from Flores, in front of the mall where his group was asked to leave earlier today, another mass of people have gathered. Fractured and verbally in-fighting already, there is no structure with this group. By just asking who was first in line, 15 hands went up and harsh words began to be exchanged. But, despite the tension, spirits were still high. Jessica Dunn says, "I did this last year for Xbox, I'm doing it this year for Playstation 3 -- in the rain."
The mall closes from 2 till 6AM. One security guard said there is a plan in place for the morning, another group of security guards say it's just going to be an "organized rush." The Sony Style store has taken a hands off approach to this and is letting whatever happens happen. None of the people outside were told what the actual number of available PS3 units is. They were told by the manager that Sony's policy is not to give any numbers. The rumor is 50 units are available.
People have also rented rooms in the Westin hotel adjoining the mall so they can get a jump on the people waiting outside in the morning.
Best Buy is quiet, so are all the GameStops and EB Games. The only place where there may be an incident is the Sony Style store at Copley Plaza. The so-sad-it's-funny coincidence of Sony bringing us this disastrous launch and then the Sony Style store being the sight of a disaster in 3 1/2 hours is not lost on us. If anybody out there has the power to organize mall security and bring structure considering Sony Style management could care less, now would be the time.

That's just great. Boy am I glad I have mine waiting at EB Games at 9:00! I can't believe the comment about "As long as we sell out, that's all we care about."

And that's just horrible. Those people were their first and deserve it. I say there should be a West Side Story rumble going down!

I am presently taking a grad-level public management class, and this write-up would make an excellent case study.
Why SHOULD the Sony Style managers do?

Yeah, thats society for you. Sony not giving a crap about its consumers and letting them fight it out in the morning is very mature and shows how society is going down the drain when people dont care about human life or safety and care more about money. Wow, thats gonna go bad real quick especially in Boston where there was a shootout last night at the Cambridge side Galeria. I wouldnt doubt a shooting, stabbing, beating, riot or some people getting robbed the first 5 minutes this shit goes down. Good luck to those poor bastards, hopefully it goes down without a hitch but if something goes down hopefully they show it on the news cause that would be fresh. This reminds me of the Pigeon Nike/Staple design dunk lows that came out last year in New York and how a riot broke out and cops had to be on the scene and escort people out the back of the building so cats wouldnt get robbed by the dudes waiting a block away to rob them.

To say you "could care less" means you care at least a little bit, enough to "care less." What you're looking for is "couldn't care less," as in you absolutely do not care.
goosedude @ Nov 17th 2006 4:45AM
This seems the case at all SONY STYLE Stores. The one here in VA....I was hoping to pick one up for my sister for XMAS who is unable to camp out because of her newborn (unlike less responsible women) but is an uber SONY Fangirl. I talked to the Mall security....they've even brought in the state police to back them up. Even though the doors to the mall will be open at 7am....(as some restaurants like AU BON PAIN are open)....there will be NO LINES allowed in front of any stores and they plan on enforcing it.
How they plan to enforce this I have no idea....maybe they'll cordon off the whole level...who knows.
Should be interesting. I'd be impressed if they get 50 units.

"As long as we sell out, that's all we care about."
Hey, it rhymes! It'd be very catchy as Sony's new slogan. Seriously though, that sounds eerily like Ken Kutagari's "We do not care" statement about Wii and 360 competition a while back.
kcsega @ Nov 17th 2006 5:51AM
"As long as we sell out, that's all we care about." Wow. Way to say that you don't care about structure or about the safety of your customers. Of course you're going to sell out. You have here, people who are actually doing you a favor by making a list of consumers who were in line, and you completely ignore it. And the thing about fans is, they usually respect each other when it comes to things like this. Of course you get the few people who are asses about it, but most people would respect a list. Don't you realize that if the store makes an Official line, no one can refute it?
The same thing alomst happened to us at the Nintendo store in NYC. We were all going to meet Miyamoto and the first 10 people would get to meet his puppy in Nintendogs. But of course, they didn't want us lining up, and the guy in charge said he didn't care about any list, even though everyone was fine with it. Fortunately, they eventually compromised and everyone was settled in.
I'm from Boston, and that Sony store is awful. I hope no one gets hurt because of their stupidity, and refusal to make some sort of decent line. Glad I'm in Japan and got a PS3 last week. (Good job by EB in Copley and Gamestop in the Pru for going the pre-oreder route.)

KCSega, I hear you. But if I'm right, the store manager might just get the axe for that comment. It's really bad press for Sony to be on record as saying that they don't care about the means, just the ends.
And remember, this is pretty much center city. I can't believe that they didn't cordon off an area inside the mall for these people to stay dry. Way to show love to your customers, Sony.

Dear Optimus Prime,
I believe the term you are looking for is "eye-witness." I suppose Joystiq could have simply not bothered ever posting a single thing that wasn't said by an official PR person, but that would make them less of a website and more of a finely tuned press release forum.
Then again, you do raise a valid point. It's not like journalists ever talk to the common man to get their perspective on an incident in which they were a primary witness. That's just unprofessional!
Hopefully, in the future, you can advise us all on how to avoid the commong rabble.
Sincerely,
Fisher

People lie, so get info from as many people as possible. Liars are typically bad at coordinating and keeping stories straight.
Also, don't trust a guy carrying a list. It's perfectly reasonable for the store official to ignore some guy's hand-picked list of who should get a PS3, with himself or a friend somewhere at the top.
I find it pretty unlikely that the Store manager actually said anything like that. Most likely entirely fabricated or taken out of context and distorted.
My take on this is some small group probably came in and caused trouble, got everyone kicked out. The ensuing chaos means the people who didn't wait 3 days have an equally bad chance as everyone else to get one. There's absolutely no way to restore order in any fair manner. The only choice is to just let them rush the store and try and keep anyone from getting hurt.
I think this probably has nothing to do with the Sony Style store, and a lot to do with a couple bastard opportunists.
Iscariote @ Nov 17th 2006 8:57AM
"Also, don't trust a guy carrying a list. It's perfectly reasonable for the store official to ignore some guy's hand-picked list of who should get a PS3, with himself or a friend somewhere at the top."
Exactly my point. Why would a store manager bother with a handwritten list? How angry would any of us be if we were waiting in line and some loser who didn't consult us walked up with "The Official List" he made with himself on top to decide who gets a PS3?

SP @ Nov 17th 2006 9:20AM
If I was a manager at that Sony store, there is no way I would get involved with that mess. Whatever you do, some people would be pissed off. If you accepted their "list," then you're relying on people that aren't employees to do that fairly, and it looks like there is another group of people they didn't include in the list, so it obviously wasn't fair. 95% of these people are just looking to turn around and sell it so I have no sympathy for their "plight."
The way I would handle it is with a lottery like they did in Japan. That's how Ticketmaster handles similar high demand ticket situations and that's the only way to make it totally fair so people don't turn into animals. It also makes it so people don't have to be waiting for 3 days.

We in Boston are totally hearting japan right now.. they gave us PS3 AND Daisuke Matsuzaka.
anonymous @ Nov 17th 2006 9:22AM
We had the same problem at the Sony Store in Menlo Park NJ. Cops threatened to take anyone off of the property who is there before 6am which never happened cause people were all over hiding in stairwells and in the woods next to the mall. This is some things I saw:
- People breaking open two of the doors (groups of 10+ running into them and pulling them) to get inside of the mall before it opened only to get chased out by the cops
- Some girl get trampled literally, she had red marks all over her face from people stepping on her
- Some kid running fell landed on his head hard, he then tries to get up twice, falls over, and starts vomitting. We ask for police to help him, after 5 minutes they never come even though we went up to officers telling them we think this kid is gonna die. No idea if he ever got help.
There were about 1000 people scattered among all the mall entrances, most near Nordstroms/Movie theater (both those doors got broken) for 16 PS3's. The sad thing is no one even got one because when everyone finally got inside mall employee's were already lined up for them.
When I was leaving there was about 4 cop cars sirens blaring driving towards the scene so something must of happened
This was so disorganized, we told the security guard this was gonna happen and how it could run it smoothly if you get everyone to one entrance and keep a list, but they didn't listen and now 1 person might be dead, at least one girl got trampled, and all the property damage to the mall cause people were rioting outside

Here are the reasons everyone on this site does not know what they are talking about:
The quote did not give the managers name, ever think it wasn't a real quote? Does not seem very legit to me.
The stores inside a mall do not have any say over fire regulations and loitering policies, which the mall secutiry is in charge of coupled with the police.
There are multiple entrences to each mall, and this mall in particular in Boston (where I live) has offices inside it...it is not a regular mall you can just shut down, people who have nothing to do with the mall have to get to work.
Any list generated with names on it may seem fair to some people in a particualr line, but if the store did not know about it BEFORE it was created and turned people away saying it would be first come first serve, how is that fair?
If everyone hates Sony so much why does everyone want to buy a PS3? It's interesting to see so many people go crazy over something they speak so negatively about.

#38 vs #34 and #10: Oh snap!
P.S.
Someone on Slashdot said it best: if you spent the $600 for a PS3 on your credit card or home mortgage instead, you could save $4800 in the end.
Joshua Reynolds @ Nov 17th 2006 2:53PM
I was waiting there at the Coply Mall since 2 pm Thursday and I still did not receive a playstation 3 because security there screwed everyone over. Instead of forming a plan all night all they could tell us about what will happen when they open the doors is "We don't Care." In the end they had to give out raffle tickets to over 300 people because over the course of 2 night security could not think of a good way to let everyone into the store in a convenient and organized manner.
The fact that the Sony Style store there did not cooperate with the security and police there even furthered the problem. A rumored 30-50+ Playstation 3s turned out to be a pathetic 16. That is sad considering the fact that one Sony Style employee was quoted as saying "Of course we will, we are Sony. Its not like we are Best Buy or something" when asked if they will be selling the ps3 unit.

well lets break this down.
1.Those people lining up, are lining up because they want to, no one is forcing them to. sony should not be held accountable for something other people feel like doing.
2.Thank you for the less educated remark.
3.Your right that is so tragic that people would think some console that costs 850 dollars to produce can even be worth 600 dollars that would just make no sense right.. no sense at all.
4.The whole wasting my free time to write a 10 second comment instead of raising money to help the african nation like you know me or some shit, you guys are pathetic. how do you know i don't already donate my own money to help africa, how do you know if i havent spent 30 times the ps3s price on helping fight the famine over there. but hey i could care less, my conscience is clear.

This is the same thing that happened to me at Best Buy in Muncie, IN. I got to the store at about 10pm Wednesday night and was told that nobody would be allowed to line up on the property until 8am Thursday morning but that we could stay in our cars or camp in the field next door at our own risk. Well by 11 there were about 30 of us so we numbered off in the order we got there. When the store manager showed up at 3:30 to set up rope for line there were like 30-40 other people sitting in the parking lot right across from the door who had shown up since we had and the manager made the announcement that after he left at 4 it was up to the Muncie PD and how they wanted to handle it although they had been instructed not to let people line up until 8. I talked to him about or list and he said that as a manager he didn't care and it didn't matter, it would be as organized or disorganized as we made it. Well as soon as his car left the parking lot 40 people bum rush the door and I wasn't one of them. I waited in my car until about 6:30am and never saw a cop so I left, hoping to get a system somewhere else, but of course I didn't.
Moral of the Story: F Best Buy

SO heres my crazy PS3 buying experience from the sony style store in South coast Plaza Mall of southern california. I get there at 4am and there are already 100s of people wandering around the parking structure adjacent to the sony store. People are not allowed on the mall grounds until 5:30am. At 5:00 AM there is a falas mad dash to the store doors that results in a huge mob of hundreds trying to jockey there place in line, but in fact there is no line its just a huge mob. the cops show up two people are tazered a couple guys arrested. Still no line in sight. The cops are spewing out directions that contradict where the line was, people are rushing in all directions when people with megaphones are calling out where the line starts. Chaos ensues. More chanting of lottery! lottery! Some police line go up in the back and they tell the horde that the line starts back there and people make a mad dash.. but its a trick by the police to break up the mob. ANother police line go up and people that didnt move that were closest to the line were first. 20 PS3s were handed out and the buyers were escorted by security one by one to their cars. People who were camping outside the mall stores were screwed while others benefited from that craziness. Needless to say this was 4 hours ill never forget. by they way i was one of the lucky 20. Though I should say i was lucky to get out of there with my life. Game on.

When its an event where people are willing to wait in line, refusing to reveal the number of units in stock is unacceptable behavior on the part of any business. People shouldn't be forced to wait in line if all hope is lost of getting a system. There are many reasons as to why its a collossally stupid idea but the biggest is it pisses people off. Pissed off people often times leaves to stupid and possibly dangerous actions.
I was lucky, out here in Gwinnett Georgia, all the businesses in the area revealed their stock numbers so people didn't waste their time. Even better, at the Gwinnett Best Buys they handled the 12:01am sale with style. They where upfront and honest about the number of systems they had.
Even better, they actually maintained a list of the order of people in line. Every person was assigned a number. This meant that people chat with anyone in the line as the order didn't matter after you got your assigned number.
Every hour or so, really whenever they felt like it, they would go up the line calling out numbers and randomly checking IDs. Those that where there and confirmed stayed on the list. Those that where not, got a strike on their name. Two strikes, they where off the list and no longer able to get the PS3.
As a result of this simple plan, people where able to socialize, knew their chances of getting a system so had realistic expectations, therefore no anger. People could leave, eat, do whatever (as long as got back before struck). About the only complaint I have is when they struck people off the list, they should have noted the time struck off that way the person couldn't show up hours later and try to talk themselves back on it.
I think this system should be copied in the future and the manager and the employees at the 504 Best Buys store should be commended for helping create an overall relaxing and fun midnight event.
