PS3 gets smashed on launch day

From the same attention whores that brought you SmashMyiPod.com (or .org, can't remember which), comes SmashMyPS3.com. The launch came. A PS3 was purchased by donor dollars. And it got smashed. The site explains:
"We decided to take the whole smashing thing a little further, and destroy things right when they come out, in front of 100s of fanboys who would be quite upset to see their beloved game console smashed. I got nothing against Sony making money. This project only exists for the sole purpose of providing satisfaction to people who hate the PlayStation 3, or just like seeing the reaction of the people who just spend a day in line to get their hands on one of these consoles. Entertainment, nothing more!"
As Maximus once rhetorically asked: "Are ye not entertained??!!"

Oh man... now there's only 199,999 PS3s left. What were they thinking. Even knowing I couldn't afford one right now the thought of t-
I can't even finish I'm going home early to cry.
ace @ Nov 17th 2006 1:32PM
This sort of act should qualify as art.
Brian @ Nov 17th 2006 1:33PM
Why am I almost forced to believe that the amount of donations collected, and the amount of donations this man reported, are not the same number?
I'm quite certain that he far exceeded $650 in donations.
Why didn't I think of this first?
CaptNink @ Nov 17th 2006 1:40PM
It's beautiful!
knightvizion @ Nov 17th 2006 1:33PM
Lol i don't think anyone in the line would be like "OMG MY PS3!" it'd be more like... "You guys just wasted a potential $5000... Nice job newbs."
Big Earl @ Nov 17th 2006 1:33PM
Ahh..worth it if only for the reactions and responses. I still would never donate to them.
Here's hoping for SmashMyWii.

Awesome! I remember when someone did this for the PS2.

I would burn straight through it with a road flare.
THAT'S a flare for the dramatic!

I'm actually proud that these guys are from my city, Toronto. They don't really have much of an agenda in their intent but the underlying anti-consumerist angle is one we aren't exposed to enough these days.
"I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that." - Lloyd Dobler, Say Anything
Pedro Van Faulk @ Nov 17th 2006 1:37PM
The true irony is that it now works better than it did out of the box.
katie @ Nov 17th 2006 1:38PM
How were they not killed on the spot?
Metaridley @ Nov 17th 2006 1:40PM
This is great. One year ago, I saw the video of the Xbox 360 get smashed, and the fanboy's reactions were priceless. I myself am a Nintendo fanboy, but I can't wait to see the Wii get smashed in front of the die-hard Nintendo fans to see their reactions.
And to all the haters of the smashourstuff.com guys: They only get the money through DONATIONS. If you have to hate, don't donate!
DG @ Nov 17th 2006 1:39PM
Eh. That's not very subtle.
DiRT @ Nov 17th 2006 1:41PM
Great move. Filling up landfills to make a point about consumerism. You sure thought this through...

I think you need to go back to schoool kid, didnt they say its for " entertainment satisfaction " purposes only? they smashed other stuff and you calling them a noobs ? I think you are the noob here, why dont you do yourself a favor and re-read that. Thanks
dvnt @ Nov 17th 2006 1:42PM
Now it just needs to be soaked in gasoline and set ablaze.
Knightwulf @ Nov 17th 2006 1:43PM
@ knightvizion:
First point: The average eBay selling price right around $2000, not $5000
Second point: I guarantee these folks made a HELL of a lot more than the $2000 they'd get for reselling the PS3 by advertising clickthroughs on the site. They have a proven trackrecord of high page hits with their previous destructive endeavours.
Kornylius @ Nov 17th 2006 1:44PM
wwww.whackmyps3smashers.com, anyone? Count me in as a donor!
JodyAnthony @ Nov 17th 2006 1:46PM
as bad as i feel for the people watching that really wanted the system, i enjoy this. people are putting so much focus on a video game console, willing to risk their futures or lives over it (people quitting their job to stand in line, etc)
its just a piece of machinery, it has no bearing on your life.
(..says the guy that waited 2 hours for a wii preorder)
Saneless @ Nov 17th 2006 3:36PM
"Lol i don't think anyone in the line would be like "OMG MY PS3!""
Well, if the store got 15 and you were #16 you sure as hell would be saying that :)
Hardcore @ Nov 17th 2006 1:47PM
Assholes. It's awesome that our society has reached a point where we are so gluttonous that people take pleasure from the wanton destruction of valued goods. How bout taking those donations and using the money to help your fellow man instead of flushing it away.

There is a God!
32_Footsteps @ Nov 17th 2006 1:47PM
They'd have to be getting a hell of alot of advertising clickthroughs to make up the $1400+ profit they'd get from selling that bad boy on eBay. I'd have to guess they'd need around a million views just to have a chance at sniffing that kind of money.
But hey, if it makes them feel better, let them go wild.
Jose @ Nov 17th 2006 1:55PM
Wow, I fucking hate Sony and the PS3, so I'm going to give them $600. Fucking idiots. And even worse are the idiots who donated to this "cause." Really, this bullshit was what you wanted to donate to, when you could have very well donated to, fuck, I'm going to say it again, childsplay, where many children could have actually enjoyed this POS3, and it would have made their quality of life that much better. Fucking shame, assholes.
dvnt @ Nov 17th 2006 1:50PM
@ 16:
Did you not notice their sites are plastered with Google ads? So not only are they getting the console paid for by others, they're also getting ad money and not to mention they're the only ones who get privilege of smashing the thing. I'm certain they make a bit off the whole thing.
> @ Nov 17th 2006 1:50PM
Only in America... hahaa. your society is going to the shits.
Paul @ Nov 17th 2006 3:15PM
Hardcore- that is the point - they are showing the consumerism issues
Muttley @ Nov 17th 2006 1:51PM
Childish. The perfect portrait of futility. Instead of taking donations and doing something relevant with it he destroys a videogame. This guy is a complete waste of life just like those who enjoy this kind of shit. Grow up. Do something useful.
JodyAnthony @ Nov 17th 2006 1:52PM
>, just jealous because you didn't get one?
Tom @ Nov 17th 2006 1:52PM
They shoulda taken the Bluray drive out first. I'm curious to know if it could be used in a PC, in the event that your PS3 breaks down while no longer under warranty.
Jose @ Nov 17th 2006 1:55PM
Oh, sorry, Hardcore already said what I did, except he was more concise and much less inflammatory. MB
Thomas Crymes @ Nov 17th 2006 1:53PM
It saddens me that people take delight in other people's misery.
It is only a game machine and shouldn't be coveted, I agree, but when your goal is to make people feel awful, I have to question your worth as a human being.

Jared @ Nov 17th 2006 2:03PM
It was a pretty assholish thing to do in front of everyone, but it was paid for..and it's really just an expensive toy. I don't expect too many people to cry over it. Nearly every PS3 camper was a scalper, anyway.

Actually, smashing a PS3 DOES hurt Sony. Remember, on every PS3 they crank out, Sony is losing a good chunk of change. As they operate on the razor/razor-blade model, they're hoping to recoup that on games and accessories. Taking the hammer to it keeps them from doing so.
Riemann Lebesgue @ Nov 17th 2006 2:09PM
"Wow, I fucking hate Sony and the PS3, so I'm going to give them $600."
Your sarcasm isn't warranted. Sony is losing several hundred dollars on each console, so the destruction of one of their consoles does hurt them if the person doesn't buy any games for it.
Of course, hurting Sony isn't smashmyps3's point, but that needed clearing up.
