Holy crap....that Putnam Walmart is one I go to often. It is only like 20 minutes away and there is a Gamestop right near it. People should just get 360s....

Criminals have no problems getting ahold of guns, no matter how illegal you make them.

Gun control law and registration only hurts law abiding citizens.

The funny thing is so many people want the ps3. But most people dont want it to play, they want to sell it on ebay and easily double or triple their 1 day investment. Leaving people that actually wanting it to play spending $2500 on ebay to play resistance and ridge racer. I'm not saying its stupid, but xbox 360 is a much smarter purchase at this point in time.

Yes, the unarmed customers outnumbered the gunmen by an order of magnitude. But that's just it - they were unarmed. How many of the 20 would get shot before the shooters were subdued? Would you like to be the one bleeding on the ground while the others dispensed a little vigilante justice?

I'd rather have my life and no money than the other way around, thank you very much. I seriously doubt there is a single person here who would put up a fight if actually confronted with this situation. If that makes me a "pussy", so be it. At least I'm willing to admit that I would take the prudent action rather than the brave/stupid one.

"Legally, how plausible is a class-action suit against SCEA and/or the retailers by those who have been injured/shot/robbed/etc in the process of waiting in line for a PS3?"

Against Sony? Highly unlikely. Against the retailers? Substantially more likely that lawsuits will occur.

"So if one of these wimpy thugs wanna rob me I will (with great pleasure) end their existence."

You're a sicko and your attitude the reason why gun control laws have to exist. No person should ever take "great pleasure" in taking the life of another person. If we could trust everyone to resort to using deadly force only reluctantly and only when absolutely necessary, there would be no problem.

Maybe you've been playing too many "murder simulators". Stop fantasizing about how awesome it would be for you to whip our your piece and be a "hero".

You can't pick when you'll need to protect yourself. And I'd think staying overnight in a parking lot with a bunch of unfamiliar people and then afterwards (hopefully) walking out to your car with something worth $2.5k falls in the higher-than-normal risk category.

Its the principle of the thing, Reguy.

I wouldn't expect you to understand principles. Maybe when you're older. Crap like this happens because people have stopped standing up for themselves and for society and have instead resorted to cowering and pray that they won't get shot anyway.

Police can't be everywhere (though they should have been there). Those guys were robbing one guy at a time. All it would have taken is one person in line with a concealed weapons license, and weapon, to end this.

Then, only the bad people would have gotten hurt, instead of the one guy who stood up for society getting shot and the bad guys making off with thousands of dollars.

Principles people! If you don't stand up for them, no one will.

Now, back to the topic... When you mix the fact that human beings today act like animals in with a very small product supply, incredibly stupid store managers, and days without sleep, you end up with a situation where a fair amount of people get hurt.

heh, lineup first to get your guns, THEN go line up for your PS3's.

This reminds me of 2 places I've been to. Opening night for Star Wars 3 had a full house. A couple of policemen were in the theatre to curb any civil disobedience which didn't occur. A local IHOP often has an officer standing guard while ppl eat. Sometimes the restaraunt gets a huge influx of ppl at say, 2am and it appears to be a sensible precaution.

I'm with you reguy, some of the people on this thread are crazy.

"So if one of these wimpy thugs wanna rob me I will (with great pleasure) end their existence." Obviously, you've never heard of two wrongs don't make a right.

And crono141, simply put, you're a fucking idiot. I'd
imagine if there were two armed gunman, one guy would be collecting the money, and the other guy would be watching out for anyone making a move.If you've ever worked at, or know someone who works at a bank, they always say just listen to the gunmen. Shit, when I worked at Gamestop they had notices about doing exactly what the robbers say. Oh, but everyone is just a pussy. They're never really gonna do anything. A few years ago about 15 minutes away from my house two
workers at an EB Games got murdered during a robery. This was the only murder I can think of that happened in my county. Police say there was a struggle. 99% of the time if everyone listens, no one gets hurt.

Morons, all of you.

Well, not all, just reguy and matt, comparing standing up against a lone gunman to going to war, and iraq.

If everybody had a gun on them, do you think either of those guys would have gotten a dime? No, everybody in line would have pulled a gun on those guys and told them to GTFO.

Then they'd either GTFO or die.

Seriously people, its not macho, and its not backpedaling (don't know where that came from), its common fucking sense.

Do you really want to hand over the power to a psycho with a gun (in a holdup situation), or would you contest him with your own guns.

Seriously, if these two jokers walked up to a line, and even 10 of the 20 people there pulled out their own piece, what do you think they'd do?

IF you were them, what would you do?

Its the people who would cower and hide that are sending this country to hell in a handbasket. I'm ashamed to even call you people countrymen.

That is, quite simply, the most horrible thing you've said. You should be ashamed of yourself, you little jerk. No, I'm not calling you a fanboy (although you've set a new low for them), I'm calling you a senseless jerk who doesn't have an ounce of sympathy or compassion, letting your blind devotion annd loyalty guide your emotions. Besides, some of these people had THEIR LIVES THREATENED. THAT IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE WOULDN'T MOCK.

Frankly, this whole launch is just getting out of hand. Now I'm hoping more than ever that Sony would just die already. It also reminds me why I'm glad that I wait to get a console.

My condolences to all who have been harmed.

I find it amazing that people are trying to pin these events onto Sony or the retailers, when in all actuality it's the people in line that are to blame. We can say that Sony created an unheard of level of hype, but those that initiated these riots are more at fault anyone else. They threw aside human decency for the chance to make a few hundred dollars. It all just seems so pathetic.

Matt,

They tell you not to resist for insurance reasons and lawsuit prevention -- it has nothing to do with your safety except to prevent them from having to pay money to your family if you were to die or get hurt while resisting.

Secondly, if you think it's absolutely crazy and want to take the chance that you'll escape any such confrontation unharmed, more power to you! That isn't at issue, to me at least. But don't judge me, or someone like me, who would rather carry and stand up for themselves in such a situation.

Not that you did, but calling someone a xenophobic racist redneck for practicing active self-defense is pretty shitty. They've made their choice, you've made yours, let it be.

Just what we need, instead of just complying and giving an accurate description of the criminals to the authorities later, you get a shootout, more people will get hurt, and random people driving by have a chance of getting shot as well.

What you fail to realize is that carrying guns will not end crime. Crime will happen no matter what, criminals will just start carrying bigger guns and wearing body armor. It is a lot easier for criminals to get automatic weapons than law abiding citizens, because the criminals don't have to do it legally.

You guys always say that, pyroshane, the bit about shootouts if everyone had guns -- but you can look at any of the 14ish states that have legalized concealed carry in recent years to see that those shootouts just don't happen.

And you already said it yourself -- when you ban guns, criminals still get them. You just admitted that gun control only affects law-abiding citizens. That's what we've been saying all along. So thanks.

"Seems like much of this could have been avoided just by setting the initial price at $1500 or so per console. Clearly, the demand would have met supply at that point, and you wouldn't have so many people waiting in line leading to nonsense like this."-DG

That, my friend, is one of the most idiotic statements I have ever heard...and no supply would not have met demand with setting the price at 1500...there are still people buying this thing at 2000, why not buy it at 1500? Granted, there would be less people wanting to buy this at over double the price but supply would not have met demand coming from millions of people who want this and a 150-200k supply of ps3s. The key thing you stated is "at this point." Would you suddenly reduce the price from 1500 to 600 in a matter or, oh say, 1/2 a year? How many fans would you lose knowing people bought this thing way overpriced with a sudden decrease.

Haters or not, Sony IS to blame for all of this.
Sony gave strict orders to retailers to NOT REVEAL ACTUAL IN STOCK NUMBERS. Sony wanted a news event, and if everybody knew what each store would have in stock, they may not have stayed in line. If you knew that your local Best Buy would only have 6 systems, and there were already 20 people in line, why would you wait in line too? They wanted LARGE crowds - period. It makes for a better press event.

One of the Best Buys here in Boston handled this all well, buy calling off their midnight sale when hundreds of people had gathered to get a PS3. They told the crowd how many they had (against Sony's orders) and many dispersed. They then allowed people to pre-buy the systems in the order they were lined up, and made them come back the next day to pick them up to avoid any of the few lucky ones from getting mugged.

Other stores could have handled things the same if they weren't afraid of any Sony retribution for breaking the DO NOT REVEAL STOCK NUMBERS rule.
