If you are talking about muiltiplayer on a single PC then i'd have to say Heroes of might and magic series is quite fun, it supports up to four(i think) people in the hotseat mode.

Secret of Mana (SNES) - the most fun I have ever had with a multiplayer game. My roommates and I would order hot sugar cookies delivered (!!!) to our dorm suite and play for hours on end. If your health wasn't in jeopardy and you took a potion that someone else needed, you had to be prepared for a beatdown.

The game required a special multiplayer adapter for the system IIRC. We also played NBA Jam and Super Bomberman 4 player, but SoM was in another league altogether.

My wife and I played Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance quite a bit on the xbox. Hmmm, I wonder if she'd get into the new Marvel game for Wii?

I can't even begin to put a number to the amount of time my brothers and I have spent playing this game over the years. We just recently broke out the SNES again to play in anticipation of the Wii. I really hope it gets put on the VC at some point.

Here's one from left field.
007 everything or nothing. I just loved this game. I thought it was one of the better play mechanics to come out in years. It definitely wasn't an FPS, and took a while to really grasp how to play, but it was a killer mechanic once you got over your biases. The multiplayer was a really nice touch, a self contained mini-campaign, and one of the few multiplayer non-fighters to come out last generation.

After that, halo 1 was a blast to go through with my brother.

And for nostalgia, RPM racing for the SNES followed by Rock and Roll racing.

Ok, this one is WAY out there. In Time Splitters 2 (good multiplayer game as is) there was a couple of hidden minigames. Four player Snake was some of the most fun ever. We played it for like at least an hour and a half at my friends house one night. Aside from that who doesn't love Smash Brothers Melee and Halo 2.

You know what's annoying? When a freaking video game blog can't even correctly type out the name of one of the most famous video games of all time. It's "Street Fighter 2" not "Streetfighter 2." You should know this.

I think this article is misleading because from my interpretation I'm think you are talking about best COOP games not the best games with online play.

People are mentioning just popular games that have an online portion but are not COOP in the slightest.

Best COOP game ever is Contra with Halo 1 distant second.

Tetris Attack multiplayer kicks all other puzzle games assessess along with Super Puzzle Fighter.
Alien Hominid - if you haven't played it... play it now.
Battlefield 2 with a good squad
DotA with everyone on vent
New Super Mario Bros is the best handheld multi ANY DAY
Mortal Kombat 2 and 3 and for that matter any old school arcade fighter KI, MK, SF2
NBA JAM with cheat codes!
DDR is always more fun playing next to someone.
I have to agree with the Secret of Mana comments... that game kicked so much ass. The end boss fight co-op was just incredible!

can't really add much to the list, but..

Contra
SSBM
Twisted Metal 2/Black
X-Men for Arcade (the huge cabinet with 6 people! favorite childhood game)
Halo 1 and 2 system link
Goldeneye (though it reeeeeally hasn't aged well)
Mario Tennis/Golf/Kart

I'm really hoping that Army of Two ends up being cool. My twin bro and I could never do versus type multiplayer when we were growing up, we would always fight. Co-op is the best.
