I opted to get a HD-DVD rather than a PS3 or Wii. They must be doing something right. I even loosened up the wallet long enough to buy an XBL membership. The 360 is Dreamcast 3 IMO. One more reason to like it.

Bill Gates described things perfectly. The New York Times agrees with Bill Gates, too. They said that the Playstation 3 is a BIG disappointment, and they listed dozens of problems with the PS3 games, the lack of online features with the Playstation 3, and how virtually everything feels rushed compared to the high-quality of the Xbox 360.

No doubt about it; the Playstation 3 is DEFINITELY a very disappointing system. The New York Times constantly compared the high-quality of the Xbox 360 to the disappointments of the Playstation 3.

All I can say is that I played the Playstation 3 at my friend's house, and I can safely say that it is something I am VERY glad I didn't waste my money on.

Yeah it looks like a lot of people are overjudging. When the Xbox 360 came out it had no one to compare it to...given a year to develop and here we are so far with it. Now it's finally Playstation's turn, c'mon it's not even a week and there are already negative claims about it...give it some time to develop. Maybe one year from now one can make a better assesment about it. Sony's not the only one who has to fix their system...we obviously know Microsoft had its fixing to do too...it's like comparing a veteran football player with a rookie, wait until they're both veterans or at the end of their careers to say which one did better or not, but right now is still too soon to make claims.

I think Microsoft should stop trying to sell 360's in Japan and just sit with the U.S. and Europa, which do have more people than Japan. Also most people in Japan have already choses there console maker of choice, Nintendo or Sony. I think it would be much easier to get people that do not play video games to play them then to get people that already do but use a none Microsoft console.

I am very happy with the entire 360 platform. There are some things that I would change here and there like more video support(DiVX), ability to add our own HDD of any size and more user customization for the dashboard. Still these are nothing that detract from the value the console brings. I have also played the PS3 extensively and can say the 360 is a much better experience. There are a lot of "gotchas" with the PS3 that you don't realize until you have it home.
I've been playing the 360 for the last 12 months and I find myself missing many of the features the 360 has when it comes to the dashboard and Live.

So it was okay for Sony to lambast the Microsoft back in 2001 by comparing titles like MGS2 to Fuzion Frenzy, but when the shoe is on the other foot...its now uncool?

Sony made developer tools available over two years ago (I believe they were only running at 70% compared to the finish product), so saying that its not right to compare is complete hogwash. Microsoft offered developers easier tools and the proof is in the pudding. How can anyone with a straight face say the PS3 is going to be light years beyond the 360 when developers say otherwise?

Sony just released a medicore product. Blame it on an early launch.

On a side note: Sans the weight of a rumble feature, does the Sixaxis feel light and cheap to anyone else? I know its built sturdy enough, but it just feels cheap.

You know, I totally understand the "under development" theory. I loved call of duty 2, in fact, it's the reason why I bought the 360, however after playing GOW, I see next gen gaming, and I understand it. Totally and completely taking control of what the 360 has to offer IMHO.

I've been playing ps3 demos, and man..... all I can think when I play it is "i've been doing this for the last year, and I've been doing it against other users online, and have been having a blast". As well.... The games don't look as good as the 360, and to top it all off, I'll be downloading movies IN HIGH DEFINITION next week. As far as I'm concerned, I'm really open minded, but that ps3 thing to me is a $600 cheap version of the 360.

BLAST.

If Microsoft really wants to compete, they need to start popping HD-DVD players in the consoles yesterday. It's also time for them to abandon rumble and their proprietary wireless controllers -- Bluetooth is definitely where it's at. While they're at it, XBox Live really isn't necessary. Give gamers the choice of varying levels of online support. Some games you need a little, some games, you need a lot. One size fits all voice chat and friends list is ridiculous. I play Gears of War with different people than I'll be playing Rainbow six. Why do I need just one friends list? Sony is delivering multiple friends list support, today. Best of all, it's free. I can't help but think how much cooler the dashboard would be if I could tilt the controller. Abandon the Vision camera and adopt Sony's amazing EyeToy technology. Why on earth can't I just plug my headset straight into the console? This wired/wireless controller thing makes no sense. With Sony, every "wireless" controller easily converts to a wired controller. Don't even get me started on achievements. Sure, the guys in the office have set up a leaderboard, but what's the fun in that. Part of having a community is being able to hide how much somebody sucks at games.

If this PS3 launch line-up tells us anything, it's just how screwed Microsoft is at this point. Resistance Fall of Man is the most innovative first-person shooter ever created. Sure there are WWII games and games with Aliens, but no one has ever combined the best aspects of these games. While 360 haters are stuck playing Ridge Racer 6 when it comes to driving games, the PS3 has Ridge Racer 7. That's a whole version better. Don't forget about Oblivion which will be a thousand times better on a "real" console. The PS3 features caching to the hard drive which will make for seamless game play. Sure, people talk exclusives, but it's titles like Madden and Call of Duty where the PS3 will really be given its opportunity to shine. Remember, software companies will write their games to take full advantage of the PS3 features, then start removing functionality so that the games will even run on the 360. Anyone who doesn't understand that is an idiot.

Now that the PS3 runs linux, there's even a 360 emulator in the works that will allow you to run 360 games right on the PS3. There's no way that a 360 can even run PS3 games without Blu-Ray. Add in freely available emulators on Linux and PS3 owners won't have to bother with buying games on XBOX Live Arcade. MAME and some ROMS, you'll be rocking brother.

I heard that the next batch of PS3s in spring will actually have 2 HDMI ports and 3 Ethernet ports. The new machine will have a 100GB drive too. It's going to have TWO HDMI ports and the 360 doesn't even have ONE. It will probably even have a PVR. They didn't put these features in the launch PS3s, because the priority is to show Microsoft how the next-gen is done.

Exclusives? How does Killzone 2 sound? Motorstorm? Have you even seen those E3 videos. The future of HD gaming is happening without Microsoft. There are more polygons in Solid Snakes mustache than a whole level of Gears of War.

There's a thing out there called "attach-rate" and that's where the PS3 wins in spades. If I buy a PS3, I only have to buy 1 $59 game, RFOM. 360 owners are stuck buying at least a dozen games if they want to see what the system can do 12x$59! You could buy a PS3 for that. In conclusion the PS3 pays for itself.

(the above rant is intended to be satirical, but is a little too close to home for some folks. Haha. I wish that I had could say the above was all made up, but almost every point has been stated by some PS3 fanboy on a forum out there)

Wow... reading that entire post, my jaw dropped, but thankfully it was all in fun. But yeah I see the Sony fanboys state many of those arguments. And up until recently, I feared that the PS3 was going to squash the 360, but after playing it at a demo kiosk, I have have came to the realization that there is just no "soul" to it. On the 360, there is, you feel it when you unlock an achievement, or play an old or new favorite on XBLA, or even when you jump into a Coop match on Gears. there is ALOT of ingenuity to it, It doesnt feel like it was thrown together at the last minute as it is with the PS3. And they won't even touch the casual gamer audience with a 600 dollar price tag. Even their backwards compatability is lame, I mean not even upscaling to Hi def on a console that is supposed to be totally hi def is just plain nuts. One thing i want to know is that w/o the inclusion of rumble, what happens when you try to pick a lock in Splinter Cell: Chaos theory? is it even possible? Well these are just my thoughts and opinions.

That was really funny up until the last paragraph. Have some faith in your audience. If people had started attacking your post for being too PS3-fanboyish, that would have been even funnier. Good post, though. Definitely.

I went to my local target about 3 days before the ps3 launch and played the demo kiosk for about 5 minutes and then let the kid behind me get his turn... right after he started playing it froze on him... target dude was over in a second to restart it... motorstorm is pretty but the 360 could handle it... easily.

#8 that was the dumbest crap i have ever read man! everything you said proves that you havent played a 360 before or you are just so biased that you are scrambling to make things up... ps3's live lacks EVERYWHERE.. it always will. how can you say having ONE friendslist is bad? you will too play different games with the same people.. because the 360 has many games that everyone will want (have fun adding them 7 times)

and that comment about buying just one game and thats all you need... with CRAP live play the replay value of a game suffers so i would LOVE to see how long you could go owning just one game.

why on earth would you WANT to plug your headset into the console? are you sitting on it?

#3: I understand that it's a launch and launches are buggy. But there's no excuse from not learning from mistakes your competitors make (like background downloading). It really seems like Sony was so arrogant they didn't even open a 360, much less see what people liked/didn't like about the system and capitalize on it.

Here's a couple things that Sony could have done (based of the xbox360):

1. Upscan to 1080 instead of down to 480 on any TVs that can't do 720p.
2. Use RF instead of bluetooth on the controllers so you don't have to handshake every time you switch.
3. Enable background downloading, always.
4. Include HD component cables, AT LEAST in your high end system. For a company that's touted HD, it's a strange omission.
5. Make voice chat a priority and enable a unified friend system. Sure it's free, but it seems to be worth exactly that much.

Those are off the top of my head, but you get the idea. Admittedly I'm a 360 fan, but I would have liked to have had a reason to put the ps3 on my shopping list. Resistance is nice, but it's not 600 dollars nice.

Okay, give Sony a chance. I loved the PlayStation 2, not because I'm a fanboy, but because I just love the games for it. I had all the systems Xbox, GameCube and PlayStation 2 and I never even played the Xbox and the only game I played for the GB was Harvest Moon. Why didn't I play the Xbox? CRAPPY ASS GAMES, I'm sorry to say it, but it's true. Now I have had my 360 for over a year now, and I've played it about 10 times. There's just no games I enjoy for the 360, I'm waiting for Blue Dragon and that's all I can say. Now for the PlayStation 3, I was planning on buyin' it at launch, but I decided to wait for more games, actually one game, Metal Gear Solid 4. The 360 has been out for a year, give the PS3 a year and then we'll see how it's doing.

Whoa, ppl write more then me :S

Noone, and I mean no one can compare the PS3 with the 360 thus far, it has only been out a week, it is still unpredictable, 360s launch was a disaster as well, lack of good games, console issues, lack of essential features ppl wanted, but look at it now, all those things have been sorted fixed and the console is shining, the PS3 is in the exact same position, the best launch was the Wii's, little or no issues, just ppl's low opinions on it, but not that that wasn't expected, the majority of ppl are happy with it.

The PS3 on the other hand has yet to sort itself out, its like an guy who had to run to a party and got there late and messy, thus having to clean himself up after he reaches, doesn't mean he won't sort himself out before the party is over and walk out with the girls :) Yeah, I know, wierd comparison, lol

Give it some time, I think those that are dissapointed deep down wanted to be dissapointed do that it gave them more comfort about thier console, I was rather dissapointed with what 360 had to offer at first, but now its prooved that it is capable of more, did you really expect the PS3 to launch perfect, not one issue, fantastic games and all things on it at superb quality, what launch has ever had that kind of prestatus, thats just too perfect, give it a year or two.

Microsoft has been very good at keeping the purse strings separated and my wallet spewing forth a green fountain. They just have what I want.

MikeC: Clearly you prefer games with a distinct Japanese flavor. I do however believe that America is getting a game design renaissance. Now, we can develop games to hang with Japan. By and large, we can make their games look like mere interative movies.

Its a shame console companies dont work together, cos if they did, we would have a console out of this world by now, and no one would have anything to argue about.

Oh well, such is life ey, everything's a competition, thats just us as humans, this is why we are so slow to develop and help work issues out, its cos everyone is an individual.

If I had a console comapny, I would at least try to form a partnership with other console comapnies not for being liked, but so that it would benefit gamers :)

Rejoice Xbox 360 owners, but, one year from now, history will be quite different. Don't get me wrong, the 360 is a good console with some good games, but is going to fail in the long run against the PS3.
In the meantime, there is no need to trash each other. And if you are a true gamer, the best thing that can happen to either console, is to have a though competitor.

I think that microsoft should make a high speed broad band service that comes with a modem and market it specifically to gamers who want to be on the same playing field as those with comcast connections.

keep silver for the stragglers and have like gold and platinum, where gold members still pay their 50 bucks a year and platnium member pay 20 buck a month but get free live arcade and free themes and picture packs

plus they can use the service with their regular computer and possibly their zune if people choose to buy that.
