Today's hottest game video: NES on PS3
It's either Sony's worst nightmare or Nintendo's bad dream, but here we have Mario Brothers circa the Nintendo Entertainment System apparently running on the PlayStation 3 for today's hottest game video. We reported this earlier today, and while we don't know if it's real or not, chances are it is. The PS3 has only been out for three days now, and we're just seeing the glimmer of the tip of the iceberg wayyyyyy off in the distance.Look for new homebrew efforts on your favorite $600 console soon. Video after the jump.

Was there any doubt that there would be modders and homebrewers just waiting to get their hands on a new system? Especially when the PSP was so easy to hack. Now if they could just implement the Sixxaxis (of evil) controller, you would have an exact replica of the Wii, graphics and all.

This cracks me up. Everyone who attends my school who has a PSP filled their memory sticks with Nintendo roms. Just get a DS! Its like all Sony systems are used to emulate Nintedo products. Lol.
Chris @ Nov 20th 2006 12:32AM
What a bunch of crap.. you get a blurry 640x480 Fedora install running an emu, on a TV with composite cables that look like they're heading off to the right somewhere.
Then, once the "PS3" is about to restart, the camerajerk decides to pan down to the system. Come back, and how convenient that the PS3 menu comes up.
Joystiq, I thought you were above this! :-P
ackmondual @ Nov 20th 2006 12:39AM
I can understand using a PSP to play emulated games. After all, it's Nin/Sega/misc, games to go all on a very large mem card.
Getting a PS3 mainly for emulated games is just wasteful since your typical $350 PC could emulate systems up to n64/PS1 without problems.
Random Insanity @ Nov 20th 2006 12:50AM
@ 1 "you would have an exact replica of the Wii, graphics and all."
No you wouldn't. The sixaxis only senses tilt, not position in 3D space.
Zac @ Nov 20th 2006 12:55AM
#4-I don't think anyone is going to get the PS3 just to emulate older games. It's just a "perk".
Why are people discounting emulation and linux just because it can be done better on a computer?
As far as I'm concerned, the more features and options the better.
loomis @ Nov 20th 2006 1:01AM
uuu mario... scummvm on ps3, now that would be HOT :)
Splinter @ Nov 20th 2006 1:06AM
Wow, after all these years, we can finally play Super Mario Bros.
Go Buy a fuckin NES and save pullin ur hair out tryin to homebrew SMB at 2fps on a shitty controller.
Sonic @ Nov 20th 2006 1:14AM
Fine by me, just shows people that Nintendo games defy boundaries and can be appreciated on anything they are played on.

mame on ps3
bunnie @ Nov 20th 2006 1:33AM
Is this homebrew or piracy? I wonder how "noapiracyscence" will react when I show them this muahaha!
Markster @ Nov 20th 2006 2:22AM
PS3 on TV
Linux on PS3
Emulator on Linux
Mario Bros on Emulator
If Sony is actually going to be supportive of Linux on the PS3, then of course Mario will be emulated on there! And Sonic, and Halo, and Doom, and *everything*.
Homebrew would cease to be the exclusive club of PSP hackers, and would become the madhouse that currently exists on your home PC.
AlloyNES @ Nov 20th 2006 2:23AM
Oh no! The PS3 does everything my computer can! And it plays games my 360 can! The humanity!
joe smith @ Nov 20th 2006 3:15AM
There's a good use of a $600 system. But I guess I can understand given the quality of the launch titles.
Jecrell @ Nov 20th 2006 5:05AM
I read someone mention scummvm earlier.
I wish we could do Scummvm on the Wii.
Point and click with a Wiimote.
Didn't Joystiq get the new Sam & Max developers a contact with Nintendo earlier this year?
J.Goodwin @ Nov 20th 2006 6:52AM
It's a truism, pirates and hackers love the system that's losing the most money.
IslandLife @ Nov 20th 2006 7:14AM
Big Deal
I already play NES ROMS on my unmodded PS2. It's so easy to do it should be a crime. NEXT!
@ Nov 20th 2006 8:47AM
This helps Sony; by allowing a freely useable secondary OS, people will leave the PS3 OS alone since it would 100x easier to do the same thing via linux.
strider_mt2k @ Nov 20th 2006 9:28AM
I think this is a fantastic combination of the hardware people want with the games that they want to play.
(Is that so terrible?)
Open your eyes, Sony.
The heart wants what the heart wants.
slybri @ Nov 20th 2006 9:38AM
This guy should sell his PS3 and second Xbox 360 and get a decent HDTV.
Blue Sam @ Nov 20th 2006 9:43AM
So, he spent $600 and play SMB? What's wrong with buy used NES for less 10 bucks?
vancej @ Nov 20th 2006 9:48AM
I agree with chris, this looks fake. First of all, why, if the PS3 is right in front of the TV, do the AV cable attatched to the front run from back within the entertainment center?
Second of all, like Chris said, the camera guy conveniently pans down to the PS3 right when it should be rebooting into the PS3 opening screen, giving someone waiting in the wings with the TV remote an opportune chance to change the channel and restart the PS3 real quick and voila! it looks like the PS3 is running linux. I'm sorry, but after only two days? Come on now. It's one thing to have gotten linux up and running, but to have it fully running applications and emulators flawlessly? I don't think so.
Sure, this will likely be possible somewhere down the line, but if it becomes big, expect big legal action from Nintendo. I have a feeling that if they took this to court with the case that Sony is willingly allowing users to run Linux knowing that they are running emulators of games that Sony does not hold the rights to, Nintendo would win. Especially now that Nintendo is once again selling said titles on the Wii. In the end, I'm sure this will result in another Sony vs. the Hackers tug-of-war battle with sony releasing firmware updates that constantly require the gamer to either decide between homebrew or new PS3 games. I'm guessing 9.9/10 will choose the new PS3 games.

Thanks all for the given information

Thats like suing a gun manufacteur for all the handgun murders that ever happen in all of history. Or, suing computer manufacteurs for allowing other OSs to be booted, and so on.. Or suing Apple because people found a way to run Doom on it.
And, emulators arent illegal or even copyright infringing.. they're all open source code. Nintendo doesnt own the code.

umm.. PS3 runs linux out of the box; there are no hacks required to the PS3 OS.. thats the whole point of running a SECOND OS in addition to the PS3 OS... people willleave the PS3 OS alone since its easier to implement stuff like emulation via linux..and, theres already another youtube movie that shows linux booting up from PS3.

You're right. Sony will use the EyeToy for detecting an object/gamers' position in 3D space.

What's with all the hate? If he wants to use his ps3 for old nintendo games then what's the big deal? I swear, the worst comes out of people whenever new systems are launching.

"I have a feeling that if they took this to court with the case that Sony is willingly allowing users to run Linux knowing that they are running emulators of games that Sony does not hold the rights to, Nintendo would win."
First, who is "they"? Nintendo?
Why doesn't Nintendo then sue Dell, IBM, Apple, HP, and every other PC manufacturer on the market? Because all this is is Linux running on the PS3, same as it does on any computer made by any of those manufacturers.
And someone gave you the handgun analogy earlier, but even that's a little too far out - what you're suggesting would be like a movie studio suing a TV manufacturer because you can watch pirated movies on it. Such a lawsuit would go absolutely nowhere.
"In the end, I'm sure this will result in another Sony vs. the Hackers tug-of-war battle with sony releasing firmware updates that constantly require the gamer to either decide between homebrew or new PS3 games."
You really aren't quite getting it: this is a *feature* of the PS3. Booting to another OS is an option built right into the system. Watch the video and you'll see it. Sony *intends* for people to run Linux on the PS3. It's the same thing they did with the PS2, except they're not charging you $200 for a "Linux kit", they're just letting you do it on your own.
Why they seem to have totally different philosophies on the PSP vs. the PS3 is a question for which I have no answer, but it is in fact the case. The PS3 supports running Linux out of the box - no hacks required. And it's there in the firmware update too - it's not as if it was a mistake.

YO, THIS IS HOT! I'M GONNA RUN OUT AND BUY A PS3 SO I CAN PLAY SUPER MARIO!
/end sarcasm
I've stated this somewhere else ... why is it that when someone gets the "True" Next gen platform from Sony, one of the first things they do ... is play a NINTENDO game on it. Irony?
At least emulate a Sega game or something. Anything but a Nintendo game. It just seems so self-defeating for any Sony fanboy.

"No you wouldn't. The sixaxis only senses tilt, not position in 3D space."
Actually, given some initial starting point you can use those tilts and accelerations to determine a position in 3d space.

Has anyone thought about using the PS3 for general PC solutions. I do a lot of video stuff and if this thing could run an open source Linux editor, that'd be very nice.

Geez...I feel sorry for this guy...He has a PS3 and TWO Xbox 360s...and they are all hooked up to a SD non-flat screen CRT...I guess he really does like living in the past...

"The sixaxis only senses tilt, not position in 3D space"
Actually it also detects what speed you're moving it at (motion) and using that you can calculate where it is in relation to any point it was at after it was turned on (it's position in 3d space)
Quit the PS3 hate, and do some actual research. Yes, Sixaxis DOES detect it's position in 3D space.
