The Dreamcast had a high attach rate too.

When people by more games, it is good.
When new people don't buy systems, you have a problem.

The attach rate alone is not a statistic that can judge a console.

but the title of the post is "Is the Xbox 360's high attach rate bad?"

WTF? What kind of logic is that? "Oh, oh. We're selling to0 many games, I guess we're going slowly going out of business"
I swear this is the type of article that Homer Simpson would write.

High attach rate = A lot of Games being sold

A lot of Games being sold = A lot of $$$ being made by developers

A lot of $$$ being made by developers = A lot of developers interested in 360 development

A lot of developers interested in 360 development = A lot of games added to 360's library

A lot of games added to 360's library = A lot of consumers interested the 360

A lot of consumers interested the 360 = A lot of 360's being sold

Possible...maybe.

Capcom, a notorious japanese-console friendly developer, ships half a million copies of Dead Rising in 2 weeks, proceeds to move to a more multi-platform approach.

Maybe its me but I really don't see how selling a truckload of games in the first year of consoles'
life can be bad. I'd be scared if it had a low attach rate.

@achiLEEs

voice of reason? whew. i'm flattered. usually people say things like "arrogant prick." thanks, man.

back to the matter at hand:

"High attach rate = A lot of Games being sold"

uh. not necessarily. last generation, the original xbox had a higher attach rate then the ps2. we all know that the ps2 crushed when it came to selling games and scoring exclusives.

attach rate decoupled from hardware sell through is just not that much fun. both being big? now, there's some action i can get behind.

now, again, slowly for the folks saying retarded crap like "WHAT THE FACK IS THE POINT OF THIS GODDAMN ARTICLE??????"

this is the point of the article -- and the study for that matter:

imagine (we're pretending with nice round numbers here) microsoft sells this many games each year for the next 5 years. not good, n'est pas?

2007 - 30,000,000
2008 - 28,000,000
2009 - 26,000,000
2010 - 24,000,000
2011 - 22,000,000

now, imagine microsoft sells this many consoles for those 5 years. not good, n'est pas?:

2007 - 6,000,000
2008 - 5,000,000
2009 - 4,000,000
2010 - 3,000,000
2011 - 2,000,000

attach rate year 1? 5:1
attach rate year 5? 11:1

dood! roxor attach rate! the 360 pwns!

Wait let me get this straight - the 360 is selling more games and you're tying to spin it as BAD? Why don't MS and Sony target a more casual gamer? Because they don't spend nearly as much money on video games as a hardcore gamer!

If you are losing money on consoles, then you WANT to sell more games per console.

THREE MAJOR THINGS THESE clueless people forgot to think of:
1 A Much bigger rate of PS2 and PS1 owners had MODIED systems those artificialy lower attach rates! Way over 1/3 of all the people I knew with PS2's had a LOT of copied games!

2 A lot more publishers where working on the other systems at the time. And only now is it getting high for a Microsoft systm.

3 A LOT OF PS1's and PS2's went 'disk read error'
which also made the attact ratio go down because the
games did not unsell them selfs and there had to be a
replacement machine bought.

A good attach rate is good. You can reason anything
to be good if your a analyst. Remember how it was great that the internet company lost 1 billion in two years! Yeah that was the analyst spinning that also same jerks!

I think we're ALL dumber for having read that. An attach rate of 5.2 means that ON AVERAGE people own 5.2 games for their 360, not that everyone who has a 360 bought 5 (.2?) games. That means that a lot of people have eight, and more casual gamers have two. In other words, if blood is pouring out of a wound on your body, the increasingly messy carpet is not your main problem.
