PSP v3.0 available now, makes friends with PS3

Our PSP-obsessed friends at PSP Fanboy spend their nights alone, checking the PSP's Network Update functionality constantly, hoping for some new firmware code to drop. Their eyes glaze over and the process becomes a primal ritual, their calloused thumbs repeating the strokes from memory. Last night, like last month, their efforts were rewarded by more than a simple security patch, but a full-blown dot-oh release: 3.0. Included in this milestone update are:
- PLAYSTATION Network titles are now supported under [Game].
- [Remote Play] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- [Online Instruction Manuals] has been added as a feature under [Network].
- Timed recording has been added as a feature under [RSS Channel].
- A visual player has been added as a feature under [Music] (see PSP Fanboy's video).
- 3-speed fast forward and fast reverse has been added as a feature under [Music].
- [Camera] has been added as a feature under [Photo].
- [UMD Auto-Start] has been added as a feature in [System Settings] under [Settings].

Glee! Does this mean we can download PS1 games today? I'd really like to get Hot Shots Golf 2.
ds @ Nov 21st 2006 11:05AM
ahhh well I don't have a ps3 so I'll stick with 1.5 (and 2.71).
nice they got to 3.0 though.
Pulse @ Nov 21st 2006 11:12AM
No, Japanese only Lorben and its tomorrow, 11/22, this is superb news, all I want for xmas is PSP games, movies, a new larger memory stick and the cam and GPS and I'll be perfectly happy and content :)
I'm gonna download this tonight, so it will be ready for my PS3 when I buy :)
Jarrett @ Nov 21st 2006 11:14AM
I updates last night, but didnt check the features. Does this have anything to do with ps1 emulation?
David @ Nov 21st 2006 11:16AM
What is this I hear that you need a PS3 to download PSOne games for the PSP? If so...that bites. I was so looking forward to a REAL FFT remake and not that kiddie poop on the GBA.
Liquid @ Nov 21st 2006 11:16AM
According to pspupdates (http://pspupdates.qj.net/PSP-3-00-Firmware-Update-Released-with-Online-Manual/pg/49/aid/73578) you have to have a ps3 to download PlayStation One games to your PSP. Can anyone confirm this? I'm in no hurry to update to 3.0 :)
From the article:
"If you don't have a PS3, your not going to be enjoying PlayStation One games emulating on Sony's PlayStation One emulator for PSP anytime soon. From the manual it states that you must connect to the Playstation Online store with your PSP connected to the PlayStation 3 in order to download and play the games."
Jarrett @ Nov 21st 2006 11:40AM
Worst.
I can see this becoming sony's new trend. Have awesome PSP features but having to use a ps3 to get them or make them work.
Isos @ Nov 21st 2006 11:47AM
Who knows if this has already been hacked to run home-brew? If not there is no way I will upgrade to it.
DrTHE0P0LIS @ Nov 21st 2006 1:34PM
ds - how are you running both 1.5 and 2.71? Unlimited Platinum?
Yes, I was disappointed to hear this as well. PS1 support was a great move and would have gone a long way towards appeasing the homebrew community while increasing the PSPs catalog and appeal. Too bad Sony felt the need to dangel this a carrot before the PS3 stick. In the long run they would have sold a lot more PS1 titles on the PSP and made a good deal more money on what is essentially the effortless increase of their game catalog by thousands of games for a system sorrily lacking in the games department. And yes, I realize that licensing makes things a bit more complicated than that, but not much. If they are releasing it for use on the PSP/PS3 chimera, they have already dealt with licensing issues.
I would have been glad to pay, Sony.
I echo the sentiments of ds when I say, "Oh well. Looks like back to homebrew for me." Homebrew and reluctant piracy.
Tengaport @ Nov 21st 2006 11:43AM
The on-line manual (new feature in ver3.0) says you need a PS3 to download PS1 titles for your PSP. This is pure crap...
SSpectre @ Nov 21st 2006 12:25PM
Oh well, I was excited about putting FF7 on my PSP, but since I'm not getting a PS3, the PSP will just go back to being a paperweight.
waywatcher @ Nov 21st 2006 2:12PM
I read somplace that right now the Sony store is not compatable with the PSP, thus you need a PS3 to get PS1 games. it seems really silly to me. But, they said they will have the store working directly with the PSP by the end of the year.
Does anyone know if the Sony store games have PSP modes? IE Can I play blast factor on my PSP?
DBX00 @ Nov 21st 2006 11:50AM
I wish everyone would listen when they make announcements about upcoming features instead of just grabbing on to hopes and dreams. Sony stated that the initial access to the Playstation store would REQUIRE the PS3. However, a second update coming before Christmas would enable Playstation Store functionality direct from the PSP and also a update early next year would allow PS1 emulation from the PS3 and access to the PS3 hard drive from ANY Wifi hotspot around the world.
People need to stop complaining about features that have already been scheduled for release. They've stated that this is the extent of what firmward 3.0 would offer and these features would be expanded in the near future. Stop acting like children and enjoy the functionality that has been added in this update.
Kspraydad @ Nov 21st 2006 12:08PM
Guys...Sony announced months ago (can't find the link right now) that you will get direct to PSP downloads...just not before the PS3.
The reason....downloads are done through the Playstation Store and they are still working on the build to allow PSP direct access to the Playstation Store. Expected timeline is 1 month from now.
This is just an early present for those that committed to the PSP AND a PS3.
Lee @ Nov 21st 2006 11:50AM
Theoopolis--have the 2 firmwares too. pspupdates.com will give u all the answers. and hopefully i never get compelled to buy a ps3 and so ill never update. sony sucks 8==D.
Saluki @ Nov 21st 2006 11:56AM
I'm pretty sure that in the 18 months I've owned my PSP I've spent more time updating the firmware than actually playing any games on it
Off to play my favorite title: Network Update
Pal @ Nov 21st 2006 12:00PM
DrTHE0P0LIS:
First of all, Undiluted Platinum. Second, he probably doesn't use the aforementioned modchip. Just use Devhook.
Kelvin @ Nov 21st 2006 12:28PM
"This is just an early present for those that committed to the PSP AND a PS3."
You mean rabid Sony fanboys?
Well the additional functionality is nice. For those who aren't still v1.5, I'd say this is an upgrade worth getting even if one didn't have a PS3.
I'm gonna wait until the HK Sony site posts up the new EBOOT though... ...I can never quite make out which version I'm getting by downloading from a Canadian connection using a HK machine.
maximus @ Nov 21st 2006 12:29PM
"16. Oh well, I was excited about putting FF7 on my PSP, but since I'm not getting a PS3, the PSP will just go back to being a paperweight."
Try reading the replies above. A paperweight, why when it's got some really good games available?
AceMilo @ Nov 21st 2006 12:46PM
No homebrew = no thanks, I will stick to 2.71se. The good news is that 3.0 has already been decrypted and dumped, but it will definitely take a while before it will be fully hacked. Until 3.0se comes out, I'll stick to 2.71se, we all know that psp games are no reason to update ;).
Korexz @ Nov 21st 2006 12:50PM
So can the PSP download the NES roms from the PS3 now... I hear the only game worth playing on the PS3 is the old NES games...
How ironic, the Wii lets you do this... and in 2 weeks Sony will release a firmware update that will take this hacked ability away.
epobirs @ Nov 21st 2006 1:48PM
Most of the update is meaningless without a PS3 or some unreleased peripherals but the ability to turn off UMD autostart is greatly appreciated. Since I don't bother with homebrew this was worth the time for the upgrade and will become more usefull as more legit downloaded PSP content becomes the norm.
goosedude @ Nov 21st 2006 2:06PM
Anyone confirm yet if you absolutely need to be running WPA-SK to get the remote play to work with the PS3.....
Sorry Sony...i am not changing my rather complex wireless setup to a different security encryption to get this service to work.
SirSaif @ Nov 23rd 2006 7:48PM
i just had a little concern about v3.0. right now i have v2.71 and when i go to the PSP Update icon, and hit X it says "The system software of your PSP system is v2.71. there is no need to update" there must be somethin im missin or im just crazy. SUMMONING ASSISTANCE!!
