It did have 48 hours of Xbox Live Gold included with it. I'd imagine that could have something to do with all the new Gold accounts...

Do you have information on other games? Just to put this into perspective.

I own a Wii but an apartment-mate has a 360, and I'm looking to get either a 360 or a PS3 in a year or so.

I played a bit of Gears of War last night. Right now, the 360 is definitely ahead. That game looks AWESOME.

Technically, they increased twofold the rate of new gold subscriptions (I read that as a 200% increase)

So, in other words, if 100 people per day were subscribing to live gold in the past, now 300 people per day are subscribing.

This isn't equivalent to doubling the number of gold accounts, which is what the entry seems to indicate.

I had a silver account and I updated to a Gold account because of this game. I have two friends who are not only going to subscribe to Xbox live but are going to buy 360s because of Gears of War.

So, if 85% of the 1 million went online.. and that doubled Gold subscriptions.. then XBL Gold only had 850k subscribers to begin with?

That is, in a year, they have only managed to get 850k paid subsrcibers to their premium online service. Thats less than 1 in 5 360s sold.

This is from an article on gamasutra

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=11812

"The company also claims that since the game went on sale in the U.S., the rate of Xbox Live Gold subscriptions has increased twofold, with more than 85 percent of customers playing the game online in some form."

It is the rate of subscriptions not the total existing subsriptions.

The game is awesome... For once I backed the right system when I bought a 360 (having previously owned a Gamecube).

my friend wanted a 360 because of Gears but actually got the system after he saw Viva Pinata... For the record that game is wicked complicated and if taken in a certain light, pretty sadistic. The pinatas eat eachother and you are basicly raising pinatas just to sell them to parties to get the crap beaten out of them...

Heh, it's really not all that different from Pokemon when you think about it. :) Pokemon is nothing but a cutesyed up version of cock fighting.

Does a 48 trial count as a subscription? If so, then the numbers aren't really impressive. But if they are counting people who actually went out and bought a membership to XBL Gold, then I'm pretty impressed.

If they are counting the doubles... then they are getting basically a new "subscriber" for every copy of Gears, Rainbow Six: Vegas, and Splinter Cell as well... yep, marketing inflating the numbers.

Good job #13 Intentless,

That comment wasn't on topic at all AND it just seemed like you were trying to sell the game to us.
Congratulations on adding nothing of use to this conversation AND looking like a corporate shill.

So the rate doubled. So if they were getting 50 gold subs a day, they were getting about 100 for the last two weeks instead. Does that count the free gold, or not...

And this is all despite the fact that legitimate copies of Gears of War do not work on 360 consoles with Hitachi drives and modified DVD firmware, but the copied version DOES... piracy kills systems, indeed.

Sadly I am not compensated for promoting said product. People are mentioning that Gears sold systems for their friends and I just felt like mentioning that Gears with Viva Pinata sold a system for my friend...

On another note. By stating subscriptions I would think that would refer to someone paying money to get the subscription where the free trial does not count as an actual subscription untill they opt to go for the paid version.

I don't think the 2 free days count as a gold account. At least not for me, the code only let me play GOW online for 2 days; for everything else (demos and other games) I was still locked out, and my profile still said I was silver.

I'll probably get a gold account soon, though.

Gears of War is even more impressive as you progress through the game. If all you've seen is the opening Act, you are in for a real treat when you get into the meat of the game. The graphics only get better. It's really mindblowing how awesome it looks. I wish more 360 kiosks had this on display to show off the power of the 360.

Gears of War never sold an Xbox 360 to me, but it would have done if I'd not had one :)

I've had a 360 since about Junuary, beem collecting dust for the most part, but Gears of War feels next gen, it feels different - it's not just the graphics.

Not an Xbox 360 fanboy, but it's good the unit is being used, quite a few games imminent out I want.

Gears is graphically stunning, has awesome multi-player over Live, the co-op online gameplay is a blast, and overall the game is just FUN from start to finish. I can't honestly imagine why any gamers wouldn't want to own it unless they dislike the shooter genre in general. It's a system seller on par with Halo.

The 48 hour trial was for playing GoW online ONLY. Your account is still silver and you have no access to any other xbox live gold features other than GoW online. So yes, the fact is impressive but not suprising, GoW is that good.

Oblivion sold me my 360. Gears is the second 360 game I have bought, the 6th 360 game I have played. I pop online for about an hour every night (or try to) with a friend for some unranked matches, and play a ranked game or two so I can slowly build up to achievments.

Hmm something doesn't add up.

I am one of the supposed 1 million who bought the game (I got it on launch day). The first few days online were crazy, there were about 100,000 people playing and it was hard to get into a game before it filled up.

Now a couple of weeks later I only see about 210,000 players on the leaderboards. Where's 85% of 1 mill?

Also the actual number of people still playing online games was sparse. I had to wait several minutes for games to fill and many people were dropping out mid-play. Very annoying.

The game is amazingly great superb awesome fun in single player and co-op but the online kind of stinks by comparison.
