PS3 loses more exclusives
It's said that the rats are the first to abandon a sinking ship. While not rats, publishers are beginning to abandon the PS3 after its less-than-impressive launch and news of production woes. Three titles have pulled up stakes and moved to the Xbox 360 (as cross-platform).
Koei, long time PlayStation supporter (and company frequently billed as key support to win the generation) has pulled Fatal Inertia and Blade Storm: The Hundred Years' War from the PS3 exclusive list and plopped them squarely into the Xbox 360 camp. Another PlayStation staple, the Armored Core series, is also coming to the white box in the form of Armored Core 4.
Sony is going to be in for a difficult battle if key players keep moving over party lines; Microsoft is doing far better coaxing exclusive content over to the 360. If Sony continues to lose its differentiation, why should gamers continue to shell out up to $200 more just to play the same games? Enjoy this machine translation for those who can't read Japanese.
[Thanks, Stephen]

Are we supposed to be impressed because the makers of the horribly stale Dynasty Warriors series has jumped the PS3 ship? I was way more impressed by the Assassin's Creed coup, as well as the fact that MS has retained exclusivity from developers Bioware and Mystwalker.

i think what would be more damning/interesting is if these titles ended up being released on the 360 before the ps3 (indicating how difficult it is to program for the cell)
but as mentioned above, none of these games have much potential to be any good at all, so really, who cares.

If Sony loses it's Final Fantasy orgy of titles, they are in a world of trouble. If the PS3 is an absolute BOMB, it might just turn that way... Square has released games on all sorts of platforms in the past, it is nowhere written in history that they will always be Sony's games.
I agree.. That is a pretty bad blog graphic!

Didn't koei started giving xbox360 its dynatasy warriors games ? I saw this coming a long time ago you can only ignore the xbox fanbase for so long...
This aint that great of a news though because I bet you PS3 will get the game first then the xbox360.
All this is saying is that those game just wont be only on the playstation 3 . Also I wouldnt be afraid of sony losing 3rd parties until I hear sqaure-enix say they're making Final Fantasy 13 for the xbox360........
Unimental @ Nov 22nd 2006 2:26PM
Yes, B33, targets have been missed across the board... but Sony is extremely low and will be through the holidays. The install base won't be competitive until Christmas 2007. Nintendo makes their own exclusives, so they aren't going to lose any. The 360 is going to have and sustain a huge lead in consoles which developers will not be able to ignore. The loser here (short-term) is Sony if they don't catch up quick. Will that translate to a long-term loss? I dunno.
Frosty22 @ Nov 22nd 2006 2:33PM
Why do people bash Joystiq for posting this? Are you just whining because you can? Is there some whining quota that you have to meet before you can call it a day? News is news folks, you don't have to put up stuff like "so am I supposed to be impressed" and shit like that. Yes... Joystiq is trying terribly hard to impress you so they can feel good about themselves. Or... they are posting things they think are newsworthy.
JRM @ Nov 22nd 2006 2:34PM
You know that Sony is in a world of hurt when JAPANESE developers are looking into the Xbox 360. It's beginning to remind me of the N64 from a decade ago, except that Sony isn't in the same league as Nintendo when it comes to 1st party games--and worse is that they're losing money, which Nintendo didn't.
If more bad news keeps coming (which it most likely will) it'll make it that much harder for SCE to right this ship. All they need now is for Blu-ray to flop and Sony will be toast.
fester @ Nov 22nd 2006 2:35PM
Lol @ Sony. Serves them right, they won't be the only devs jumping ship if the problems continue.

Werbal @ Nov 22nd 2006 3:00PM
What developers are doing is crunching the numbers and estimating that, unless Sony MAJORLY fixes the flaws in their production process, there may only be as many as 10 million PS3s on the market by Christmas 07, and maybe less. Compare that to the 7 million systems that the 360 has out right now and that makes Microsoft look pretty good.
I'd say by April or May we'll have a solid idea as to where Sony will end up in these nex gen wars. If PS3 production hasn't increased or shown signs of increasing, I'd say things would look pretty bleak for Sony.

Triforceowner @ Nov 22nd 2006 3:47PM
Like Ash says, none of these ports truly matter unless
Metal Gears Solid and Final Fantasy land on the 360. These are definitely the biggest guns the PS3 has, and without them Sony is almost doomed. I know a lot of people who are only getting the PS3 for one of these two games, and for only that one. These are the key series that will keep the PS3 from dying completely.
B33, slickhead is correct about one of those D's. Deceit has been Sony's middle name ever since E3 2006. Why? E3 2005 held tons of promises that many of us bought into. E3 2006 was more or less the most disappointing videogame event I ever witnessed. This kind of ticked me off, and I stopped supporting the PS3.
EdZ @ Nov 22nd 2006 3:50PM

Even if these games seem unimportant...it's still funny...and deserved by Sony.
I didn't care about any of these titles before either. But I don't care about MGS or DMC. Just bring us Final Fantasy XIII on the 360 and my Playstation days will end FOREVER.
:)
Eggman @ Nov 22nd 2006 3:57PM
u guys miss the point, it doesn't take a consoles biggest weapons to be ported to another system to notice its sinking. Armored core is actually a pretty big franchise. And each exclusive the ps3 loses gives one less reason to buy it (whoevers buying a $600 console for 2 games ((ff and mgs)) is either insanely rich, or retarded).
Like that pres of atari said a few weeks back, sony treated its partners like dirt during the ps2 era and its catching up with them now. Devs are starting to realize they dont need to take that kind of shit. Sony needs to swollow its pride and start kissing some ass.
socrates @ Nov 22nd 2006 4:03PM

Yes, Assassin's Creed was a big fish to lose exclusivity on. But praise for the Xbox onlyness of Bioware games has to be tempered by the ready PC availability of those titles. If System Shock wasn't availble on the PC, I'd be much more tempted to snap up a 360. As it is, PS3-only exclusives still trump the 360's real exclusives by a wide margin in my mind.
serge @ Nov 22nd 2006 4:10PM
All i wanna play is Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, blue dragon, and Halo 3.
For now i enjoy Gears of war, not to mention other great games, but the list is too big. :)
All Sony has is MGS, DMC and FF... anyway g/l trying...
I would consider getting ps3 if they had better PR. but their BS just makes their fans look like assholes. Sad.
porkepik @ Nov 22nd 2006 4:17PM
I also agree. If FF13 is announced for the 360 I buy one tomorrow and sony can say goodbye to me, I passed on a feb06 pre-ordered PS3 at TRU because no launch game interested me and TRU was forcing a bundle to me (2 games+controller). I did not want to risk selling it on ebay and could not justify the buy without any games interesting me, so someone had the chance to buy it from the store (they received a grand total of 5 units, was nr 1 on the p-o list). So I said no thanks, now I'm waiting coz nothing matter to me in the release list till march. I will not buy till FF13 or 1 good RPG(like white knight story) if most RPG'S are also slated for the X360 I will buy it instead the PS3 and a HD-DVD add-on(have an hdtv), the best would be for microsoft to include the HD-DVD drive inside the X360 or increase its HDD size after january, will probably buy in march or july. I still have about 10 RPG to finish inc FF12 so i'm not in a hurry .
twism10000 @ Nov 22nd 2006 4:33PM
even though these exclusives (PS3) don't mean much to most players, but its a good sign for Microsoft. Assasins Creed anyone and maybe even Metal Gear Solid 4.

" If Sony continues to lose its differentiation, why should gamers continue to shell out up to $200 more just to play the same games? "
armored core?? fatal inertia?? eww, a real threat..
man, xbox can have those crappy titles! Have you forgotten that even with the 360's head start, the PS2 has continued to pounce on it in console sales?? I'm not sure if this remains true since the launch of Gears. But it's not like the 360 was ever a real threat to Sony. C'mon man, get real. So the 360 managed to snag a couple of Sony exclusives. BIG DEAL. Microsoft should have been making these moves since before the 360 launch; not after a red carpet intro for two other next gen consoles.
Right now, the only thing that's keeping the xbox 360 alive is the fact that they've had a year's head start prior to the coming of the Wii and the PS3. THAT'S IT!
Look, the 360 had over a year to recruit heads into its next gen militia and they fell short of expectations. now, all of a sudden, Gears comes out and 360 fanboys are screaming, "we're baaack!" Really?? Without Halo 2(online), the 360 would have been another expensive paper weight! Period. so guess what.. an exclusive contract with a Halo 3 appetizer(Gears) just won't be enough to consider Microsoft a contender in the next gen war to occupy living room space.
Revo @ Nov 22nd 2006 4:38PM
If these games are ported and that's the end of it, this won't be a big deal at all. But if this is a sign of things to come, the PS3 is in major trouble. There's little reason to buy a console that lacks exclusive titles, particularly at such a high price point.

Hmm. In the past year, 3 people have been in my living room that were not 360 fans, and now each of them has one. I'll even give it to you that ONE of them was a dude who saw a Gears of War video I d/led on Marketplace.
Maybe my filled up with videos and demos hard drive and all my Arcade games and my ability to stream music, pics and videos from my PC and Mac upstairs kinda swayed them.
Or maybe it was its paperweight skills.
Keil Joy @ Nov 22nd 2006 6:27PM
" Maybe my filled up with videos and demos hard drive and all my Arcade games and my ability to stream music, pics and videos from my PC and Mac upstairs kinda swayed them. "
in case you haven't noticed, tiaMaster, that's not a very big deal. Especially when you consider that i don't even need a pc to do the same things on my psp! As a matter of fact, a person can stream content from their PS3 onto their psp from anywhere in the world. this content is including, but not limited to, videos, demos and mp3s. But your talking about streaming stuff to your 360 from your PC upstairs??! Trust me. Microsoft can do way better than that.
Now let's talk games on the 360. Then again, once you mention Gears and Halo there really isn't much left to talk about. My point is that a console should not have to rely on one or two big titles to stay in the race. Hate my words all you want. the fact is that the 360 has not lived up to the hype since its lauch. also, a year is far too long for me to wait between decent game titles!

FWIW the opinion of someone who actually owns a PS3 and an Xbox 360:
I love my PS3. I've been a pretty die-hard Sony fan for many years.
Yet I have to admit that the PS3 is not *that* better than my 360. Truth is they're both great systems. Everyone here has PS3 burnout however so we've already unplugged it and went back to GoW.
turkdaone @ Nov 22nd 2006 8:52PM
OKAY FOR ALL OF THE GENIUSES THAT KEEP SAYING THAT THEY ARE NOT IMPRESSED, HERES HOW IT ACTUALLY WORKS IN THE REAL WORLD.
Now for all the sony fanboys here's whats funny to me.First off I remember everyone screaming how the ps2 had tons of software, literally tons of software. Is this not one of the reasons the ps2 system is still selling? Not everyone that has a ps2 gets every ff or mgs game.(I have never bought a ff game, and most of my friends havent either, I never owned a mgs either, same as my friends)But its all about the content.Actually if you do the math based on units of software the xbox had better quality games because it actualy had less games that were craptacular. There are currently over 8,000 ps2 games, and most people that are hardcore may own30-40(counting games that were purchased pre owned.)But the reason being is that yes there are people that buy barbie games, and movie license games etc.Thats why these games keep getting released. Now fatal inertia looks like a fun game.
So say what you will, but as long as these titles come it only proves one thing. That m$ made the correct decision in creating hardware that was dev friendly(moreso than the competition) and releasing better dev tools that create lower cost. This actually helps devs.People are saying that m$ is screwed and whatnot, but that is far from the truth. With the headstart(from m$) and rising dev cost(sony and m$), I mean honestly we all heard this from J Allard multiple times. sony should have made a more approachable system. Now the truth is that if the ps3 didnt have blu ray it would be more accessible to mainstream consumers($400.00>600.00$ consumer wise). The 360 isnt mainstream just yet, but its getting there.Even nintendo understood this and made a better effort to keep cost low.Trust me you will see a ton of crappy games for the wii, I know everyone here loves nintendo, but with cheaper production costs and the promise of better profit, most games will be the same just given a different title.I mean its too easy to resist.
The same way we saw gta clones, because it was a sure bet, but none actually had the quality of gta.It will be the same for the wii.Wii sports clones and anything else nintendo makes will be cloned and released without that pazazz.
As long as these games are coming to the 360 that means the ps3 is still suffering in consoles sold.
And the honest truth is this:People dont buy 600$ consoles.Sonys losing $240.00 on every ps3 sold, so when do you expect to see a price drop?No you wont see one by next christmas either if you do it will be a desperation attempt to get better sales.
Thes weak games that everyones talking about actually paves the way for the mgs, and the ff.Do you really think that mgs is gonna release on a console with say 24 million consumers with ps3's?Trust me that would be suicide especially if the game is really good.Thats why you will see mgs and ff.Its about keeping the lights on at the end of the day, and its easier to do that with millions of extra consumers ready for that game(xbox360 fanbase)
Ask your self this question and be honest. Are you really ready to spend $600-$700 for a gaming experiance with a friend?(game and extra controller turns the core ps3 into more than 600$ after taxes, and thats not good.Especially when I can get a premium 360,extra controller, 2 games of your choice(good ones at that wider variety) live subscription, and on the way home fill up the gas tank.lol
"" @ Nov 22nd 2006 9:18PM
turkdaone sums this up nicely. The amount of games the PoS3 will get will be low. So Xbox360 will keep getting more games, and less people will pay $600 to play a game or two when odds are they can get the same game on the 360 and save $200, which means they can buy more games, and the 360 userbase will grow, and it will get more games, and the cycle continues. Wii60 ftw.
Don Jose @ Nov 22nd 2006 9:59PM
