The problem with my 360s disc tray is this. Sometimes when I put a disc in, it just stays at the dashboard still saying "Open Tray". But sometimes when it DOES work it goes to this screen saying "In order to play this disc put it in a Xbox 360 console". This has happen quite a few times when I put Gears of War, and Test Drive Unlimited in. And then when the games actually DO work, I cant get past 20 minutes of playng with out getting an error message that "The disc is unreadable" and "Clean the disc with a soft cloth" and then "Restart the Console". OR the game just freezes all of a sudden then i have to turn off the console. And then I would find out that all this was a pre-curser to....THE 3 FLASHING RED LIGHTS :(. Then I had to call Customer Support a 3RD time to give them an update on what has to be fixed in my console. It has been 5 days since I made my initial call for a repair box, and I still sit here waiting. And then I will have to wait "9-12 days" for my Xbox 360 console to return. Now my Xbox 360 stands next to my Tv bare without the faceplate, ready to be sent away...

The wii and 360 are going to have fewer problems over the thrown together ps3. I'm willing to bet that the ps3 this year will have more defects and issues than the wii and xbox 360 put together.

First I woul like to say you are now the first site I go too when I turn My computer on. You have replaced all the commercial sites that I use to go to first, don't get me wrong I still will visit the other sites after your site. I thank you for all the informative topics you put on your site, your always on top of things and thats why I have found your site is the first one I go too. Sory for getting of the subject about the puking Wii. I on a PS2,Xbox 360,Wii and a PS3.I just got my Wii on the release date and my PS3 on 11/24 Thanks to a very devoted customer oriented Manager of one of th EB store. I had pre-ordered mine way before the Toys R'Us people got to pre-ordered there PS3.I found out from your site EB/GAMESTOP were going to be short, so I called the EB I ordered my PS3 and Wii from and told them they would not have enough PS3 for all the preorder, the manager was going too notify me but thanks too your site I already new and told him it was alright. The manager who I have only none for one month said he would do everything to get me one as soon as posible as EB/GAMESTOP in Texas told him Sony would ship some each week, so I really wanted it on release day , but the more I read about bad things happening with the PS3 I was happy not to get the first ones. I just wan't to say not all workers of EB/GAMESTOP are bad and the manager of my store didn't have to go out of his way toget me one a week later, so now not only do I have a good manager at my EB but now he is also a good friend. I don't want you all to think he only did it for me but all the people who pre-ordered PS3 and didn't get it on the first shipment got the same treatment too. Since I got the Wii and PS3 , I have used the Wii twice and th PS3 once to set it up (definitly get a USB keyboard or you'll be having thumb cranps)any way to go on both unit work fine the Wii set up was straight foward but the PS3 took a lot of time. I have two question about the Wii and PS3 if any one can answer this I would appriciate it. Question one on the Wii does the blue light on the slot loading come on wj\hen you insert a disc because I only see it blink when I turn on the unit but I notice in the puking Wii video it blink once when the disc was inserted again? Second question is for any one who has set up there PS3 , got through everything find till I was asked to register on the network, as I am already registered on the Playstation.com I picked the choice of already registered and I put that info in and then it asked me again to enter user name and password, so I did and it didn't take it so do I have to make a new account on the PS3 because it's a different sign up? Thanks for any help and one last thing I got Resisstance of Man and when I put the disc in it asked me to wait for it to load on to the hard drive, it seemed for ever. Does every game for the PS3 have tto load on the hard drive before it plays? I find this a lot longer to wait then all the other units I have. I really think now that I have my PS3 and all the things Sony did wrong with the PS3 was them thinking they were the Big dog in the industry and they could release any thing with the Playstation logo and people will buy due to there pass sucess. I know that if I had 62% of the market I would of come up with a better design of the PS3, yes they gave you a lot of technology for the price but like you said on your sight why bother with slot loading or tray loading just use a simple lid that pops up with no machanic or slot or tray engines to go wrong. I know some of you like the ease of motorized slot and tray units, but just think if you had a PS2 Slim simple design we wouldn't be having disc loading proplems like all the NextGen units are having. I wan't to tahnk everyone for reading my thoughts and question. Sorry for being such a long post. Once again I wan't to thank you who ever runs Joystiq site, keep up the great work.

P.S.
I think Sony is throwing iit all away with the delays , not telling us exactly how many units would be at launch, passing the blame on all sort of excuses and giving us a so,so unit in the PS3 even though they had an extra years than the competition. People in Europe may get a better unit than the US or Japan, and if they do I hope Sony does right by all the true gamers and not you lots that sold the PS3 for profit, by giving us an apology or replace are units with the better Europe ones if there's turn out to be better as we true Playstation people have brought your product in the past and waited patienly for the PS3. Thanks every one. PEACE AND LOVE TOO ALL!

"The problem with top loaders like the PS1, Saturn, etc. is that a top loader takes up too much space. A top-loading unit must be on top of the stack. So, if you have 4 consoles and all top-load, you need to place them side-by side. If you have tray or slot loaders, you can put them on top of each other, or stand them up next to each other." Steve2

I agree. And one other thing, sometimes the top loader doesn't always click in right. I have to push down on my GC's top thingie about three or four times before it finally clicks and closes right.

I prefer the tray loading drives myself, because I've never had a problem with them and I think its just easier putting discs in the tray than making sure there is enough room for the top loader, or making sure you hold the disc right in the trayless so no fingerprints get on the disc.

And as for the video, I doubt it was fake. The Wii tries to pull in the disc but it gets stuck halfway, and its not supposed to spit it out like that either.

My 2001 GM Astra still has the factory stereo, and NEVER had a problem with it. Of course it wasn't a new piece of technology, nor was it selling out every week so the factory needed to ship as much as possible.

Relax guys, shit happens.

For all you non-believers stating that you can see through the disc, get glasses. The floor you are seeing is just the floor that we can't see at the bottom of the video being reflected, and it is clear the Wii you claim to see through the disc is just a reflection of the SD slot. Pause the video when he is holding it, you will not see his fingers or the bag in the back through the disc. Before you assume anything, test it multiple times please.

I love how people are instantly trying to call bullshit cause Nintendo is God and they can never mess up. Obviously, one defective Wii system is evident and repair shouldn't be that bad.

Guys, Nintendo also messes up. The only difference is that they try to learn from their mistakes.

Can anyone out there with a Wii check the manual to see if loading a disk during standby mode does this. And if so can this article be updated with the fact that someone is simply out to make the Wii look bad.

No, Foetoid, loading the Wii in standby mode does not do that. Loading a blank disc does make the Wii produce the grinding noises, though.

Maybe they send the console to that X360 factory in guadalajara? is that place still operational?

I frequently load my discs in standby mode. It takes the disc fine, and actually turns the console on in the process. Also, ejecting a disc while in standby mode spits it out right away, instead of having to wait the few seconds for the Wii to finish up with the disc in use. So, being in standby mode doesn't affect anything.

I said this would be a problem immediately after seeing the final designs for both consoles. Having done tech support for a major computer manufacturer, these front-loading drives are trouble. Car stereos are not a good comparison because they do not involve the same amount of speed or error correction as simple 'redbook' audio does. And, as mentioned, they do have their fair share of problems as well.

Top-loading is also a poor solution. Nobody seems to have hit on the reason why, however: by exposing the laser lens and mechanism to the open environment, you run a very high risk of contamination, damage, or other problems that are solved by keeping the actual lens mechanism enclosed within the case.

The best solution? There's a reason why -all- CD/DVD-ROM drives for PC's involve a front-loading tray just like the original PS2. You keep the lens enclosed, you allow the user to center a disc and ensure it's aligned for proper loading, and it's a very simple mechanical mechanism. Cheap to repair, and most drives now have the 'safety pin/paper clip' ejection slot to retrieve discs from a broken drive, something impossible with a motorized slot-loading drive.

This -will- bite both Sony and Nintendo in the ass in the long run, I guarantee. The 360 may have trouble with shoddy drive trays, but that's due to Microsoft's reliance on cheap hardware and their poor maintenance arrangement. Swapping a drive on -any- piece of hardware should take a tech all of 10 minutes, tops, so these three-week repair times are purely logistical and organizational, NOT technical.

Well, crap. Messed up that comment. Here's what the line -should- have said:

'Car stereos are not a good comparison because they read simple 'redbook' audio and do not involve the same amount of speed or error correction as data and DVD drives.'

Nothing like making your comment into absolute gibberish by not re-reading it before posting.

What's wrong with the PS2 redesign where the top just pops up, you place the disc in the system, close it up and no easily defective loading mechanism gets in the way?

They are easily hacked for pirated/unauthorized discs. Sony found that out right away with the original PS1. You could play backups and imports by buying a 40 cent spring from the hardware store.

You should just spend the $40 or whatever for the xbox extended service deal and not have to worry about anything.. I just had my system serviced because the disc tray wasn't ejecting properly.. Luckily I live in Houston, Tx so I only had to wait a week from start to finish. They shipped me out the packing materials and a lable.. everything was free.

I was worried this would happen with the PS3 and Wii loader. As a veteran of 3 broken car steroes that have the disk loader feature it seemed like a `dangerous` tech to be relying on. The 360 tray may be ugly, but I would venture to guess it will be more reliable than it`s Japanese counterparts.

not only that, but they have a 1 year warranty that comes with the system :O

does that maybe help? But like someone said this seems to be rare. It just sucks that it had to be my Wii. It actually still works if you can get the disc to stay in. But afterwards the disc contains various scratches. I could post a picture of the disc if you want?

@Jamie #50 Check the vid again, the first time he doesn't touch till after the disk is ejected.

the type of disk shouldn't effect the fact that it is gear ripping before it even makes it into the drive. It's just a malfunctioning loader. If you have ever repaired the inside of (or just torn one apart) a CD/DVD drive of any type (mech load) you'd know that the loading gears can get missallined... used to net me about $40 bucks to realine a drive try on a computer after a customer's kid had yanked or forced the drive... the same can happen to a front feed in some cases.

I am curious why he feels the need to keep touching and repositioning it everytime the disc is inserted.

As for toploading...who has so little space that they can't open a top-loading system? It's not like anyone can place items on top of a PS3, Wii or Xbox360, and home entertainment centers are frequently adjustable.

All the old systems did it, and mine are all still around (though my Sega CD makes some pretty terrible grinding noises).

My 360 started having tray problems a couple weeks ago (bought it in February). After finding out that there was no warranty on it and that it was going to cost $139 to fix I told the rep where he could stick it. Mine's not too bad, it only happens when the console is vertical... at least for now.
