Gears of War enhancements incoming, trilogy unconfirmed
"Why stop at three?" Epic's Mark Rein writes in response to Microsoft's Jeff Bell implying that Gears of War will become a trilogy. While no doubt a success, we're not ready to put Gears in the same league as Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Mario, or Metal Gear Solid. Nevertheless, Rein points to these franchises' abilities to continue to deliver popular entertainment (beyond the trilogy mark) and suggests, similarly, the Gears universe still has plenty of content to offer fans. Sounds like plot might factor into the sequel -- and here we thought sawdomy* was the only thing this series had going for it.Rein did add that Epic's focus is still on the original Gears of War, promising to deliver "some great enhancements you'll hopefully see before too long." Perhaps ranked matches will be tweaked to support team-play after all.

Some enhancements I'd like to see:
New maps
Fix grenade tagging
4-player co-op (would be awesome, but might make the game too easy)
Avinash_Tyagi @ Nov 27th 2006 2:29PM
Can't wait for Gears of soccer and Gears Kart :P
JPRacer @ Nov 27th 2006 3:19PM
If Epic act like they do on the PC then Gears will live for a long time. New mods, patches, maps, models...
JDuB @ Nov 27th 2006 2:22PM
What needs to be fixed regarding grenade tagging? It's great!
Unimental @ Nov 27th 2006 2:25PM
Kevin - you can "fix" grenade tagging with the shotgun or the butt-end of the sniper rifle. The chainsaw is, as always, another great option.

Why no mention of Halo in the "same league as..."
Jason @ Nov 27th 2006 2:29PM
the sooner the better - half of my friends who were playing this have already moved on to other games - not a good sign.
Intentless @ Nov 27th 2006 2:31PM
gears kart would be sweet...
Jooced @ Nov 27th 2006 2:37PM
Just fix the @#$()*ing mic bug!
Lijik @ Nov 27th 2006 3:02PM
I'll start taking Mark Rein seriously about Gears sequels when that Jazz Jackrabbit 2 sequel finally gets somewhere other than the occasional update from Cliff on why it's still not going anywhere.
Seifer @ Nov 27th 2006 2:42PM
Heh heh... "sawdomy".
Red Dog @ Nov 27th 2006 2:59PM
I have to agree that I've also moved on fairly quickly to other games myself. After finishing the single player campaign, there just isn't enough depth to the online multiplayer to keep me coming back for more. Sure, it looks great and all, but that will only go so far.
Personally, I think this game is just screaming for Capture The Flag. I dislike the style of gameplay implemented here (the one death per match deal). It gets on my nerves after a while. I'm having more fun online with the Lost Planet multiplayer demo than Gears, honestly.

Gears Paint: Stencil Graffiti
Dom's Mansion
General Raam Ware
Marcus Fenix is Missing
Gears Lan Party
Dance Dance Revolution: Cole Train’s Soul Train
Mihn Young Kim's: Trauma Center.

What baffles me is that none of these LIVE-ENABLED games make use of the groundwork that Bungie laid with Halo2. Being able to create a lobby where you and your friends can match up against a group of similarly ranked people then be returned back to your lobby when you are finished works so great. In fact its the only thing I even like about Halo2...other than than Gears is much more fun.
I can maybe understand other games not making use of this, but Gears is a Microsoft game...you think they could have pulled some strings at Bungie (also a Microsoft company) and used their same model.
devi8i @ Nov 27th 2006 4:14PM
Please please fix where when someone drops out of co-op it ends the game....someone can jump in to your co-op game wherever you are at but they cannot leave without ending the game???? What kind of crap is that?
puddlejumper @ Nov 27th 2006 4:36PM
There's a lot of stuff that needs to be fixed still. I swear the chaisaw kill needs tweaking. Lots of time people get killed even though they do the chainsaw first.
Also the multiplayer connection has issues. Half the time people can't even join games.
Lastly, like everyone else mentions, they really need to implement a proper team play, lobby or some function so people can organize real games instead of having people drop in and out.

I generally play a game online one or twice and that's it. For some reason GoW has really sucked me in. I really like the pacing, strategy and the whole one life gameplay much better than any other online game.
Bedwards @ Nov 27th 2006 3:48PM
Perhaps they will "enhance" the single player game, because when I've played a game off and on for 3 days and my roommate asks me where I'm at in the game, The end boss shouldn't be the answer. And no I'm not gonna get live gold for I don't need to add baking soda to that cocaine.

As a loong time Unreal franchise fan, I can attest to the fact that Epic games generally come out in better shape than the competition and receive superior support . . . for a year or so. Unfortunately, after they pull the plug, they really pull the plug.
Unreal Tournament (99, the bestest competitive FPS for CTF ever released [honorable mention to Tribes]) still had huge problems with in-client cheats when Epic stopped supporting it, effectively cutting its still amazing lifespan shorter than it otherwise would have been.
Epic also, unfortunately for Gears fans, has a tendancy to seriously underwhelm with their sequels. Here's to hoping however.

Did you guys know that Gears of War Realm has recently launched a wiki guide?
MaX PL @ Nov 27th 2006 7:06PM
i stopped playing gears a few days after i got it.
the single player was fun for a while. the multiplayer was fun for a while.
but ultimately, however, i bought another game called Rainbow Six; a game with multiplayer twice that of Gears.
I dont know what Epic was thinking by focusing on making a good single player. especially since its only 10 to 15 hours of gameplay. the multiplayer is where its at, and the sub par online gameplay, options, and features will likely have people fall to Rainbow Six or even back to Halo 2.
Gears was overhyped. Then again, my interest for video games is just about over which is why i say this.
Jeramy @ Nov 27th 2006 10:00PM
randomshagz that is great. i love it.

I've noticed a lot of comments about games not supporting the lobby feature that Halo 2 had, but Saints Row does, which adds to the online fun. So there's no reason why no other game can't support that feature... Halo.. how you've spoiled us.
