Does it make sense for Microsoft to be in the portable MP3 player business? No, it does not. And yet there is Zune.

Does it make sense for Microsoft to be in the peripheral computer hardware business? No it does not. And yet there is Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 et al.

Does it make sense for Microsoft to be in the home video game console business...?

The man who directed blood rain is horrid. His hole "I will fight my critics" was stupid too. He beated up a minor dureing that, for the lords sake!

If they had half decent directors that stayed true to the game, and didn't go around putting people out of carater, and adding/removeing things willly nilly, they chould of ended up with alot better movies. Video Game movies have been neglectided.

I agree microsoft should fund it them selfs, The magor componys whould just get there horrid fingers in it. I think haveing a young director who has probly acculy played the game is a brilent idea too.

I know right now me and all my friends will be out buying our own copy of The Halo Movie when it comes out.

Double stardard. They want to make a movie and profit from it, but they don't want to fund it themselves. They should have realized the inherent flaw in their plan before wasting everyone's time announcing the film.

They're playing it conservative. Remember Square. They made a movie division that produced Spirits Within. The movie division went out of business and cost them millions, likely leading to their merger with Enix. I think Microsoft may not want to take such a risk.

When was Silent Hill a bomb? It was number one in theaters the weekend it came out. It did make a profit concidering what it was.

What helped Mortal Kombat was the soundtrack, it's probably the only soundtrack to a movie based on a video game to get a Platinum Album.

Microsoft could take a lesson from George Lucas on this issue. Part of why Lucas is so rich is that he was able to maintain a much greater portion of Star Wars ownership than is typical for such properties. This was due to 20th Century Fox failing to appreciate what they had and not ponying up the cash when it was needed. Lucas took on the risks and reaped the rewards.

But then, Lucas was always in the movie business. Microsoft isn't. Yes, the console business made excellent sense for Microsoft. Developers are praising the quality of Xbox 360 tools because of the experience in supporting developers Microsoft brought to the project. The company was founded on development tools. Operating systems came later and largely as a chance opportunity. At the time the big value in doing DOS was viewed as being in on the ground floor for programming languages and other tools to run on DOS systems.

The best thing for Microsoft to do is create a new production company with a $Billion and rights to the Microsoft games portfolio for use in non-interactive forms. This operation would have its own P&L sheet and neither its successes or failures would be placed upon folks working on games.

"Remember Square."

Yes, but MS is not Square. Microsoft can afford to lose a few hundred million dollars and it won't drive them out of business, or even effect them in any noticable way.

I can understand the reservations about making a movie out of a video game. Although, this time, we're talking about a game that actually has a halfway decent storyline. Granted, HALO 2 didn't have the greatest storyline [the end was BS], but the movie would be a good chance to expound upon it. I think that MS is missing the opportunity to cross-promote merchandise, ticket sales, game and console sales all at the same time.

I know I and at least a dozen of my friends would be there dragging all our friends and family to this movie if released. I think if this movie is well crafted, could be a profit maker on several fronts.

As a MSFT shareholder, I say they better stay far, far away from the craphole that is the movie industry. I didn't buy any damned movie studio stock. If I wanted to make that foolish bet, I would have skipped the middle man and bought Sony (doh!).

"Seriously, $200 million is a drop in the bucket to Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division, which is already around $3.8 billion dollars in the red."

I'm not usually one to criticize this site, but are you actually suggesting that Microsoft should just spend $200,000,000 because it's no big deal to them? I don't care if you're a Fortune 500 company or not, you just don't spend money because you can.

Personally, I believe that in the standards of video game movies, Halo will be a success. I personally have only seen Resident Evil (it was ok) in theaters, but I would see Halo when it comes out with my brother. I don't know why, I've never been that into the Halo storyline, but it might be cool if they make it a fun summer action movie.

Mortal Kombat does not hold the record for a video game movie. Lara Craft: Tomb Raider is way above all other video game movies. http://boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=videogameadaptation.htm

And even still I believe that Halo would break the record if released. But usually movie budgets don't include advertising which costs tens of millions, and often actors or producers get a percentage cut.

Even if Halo is a success by those standards, it does not mean it will make money, and a company is not just going to go out and release a product that will lose them money. They may have lost money on the Xbox but in the long run by establishing brand they might turn a profit. If the Halo movie is truly gonna cost $200 million, I don't think it will cover the costs in the long run, even if you count DVD sales.

A company is not going to waste hundreds of millions of dollars if it's not getting it back, whether or not they can afford it and you really want to see it. That's the dumbest idea ever.

#9: I know that, they know that. My point is that they probably don't want to risk their money on a venture that can go so wrong.

...actually, MS needs to do what Square did, only wayyyyyy better. Think Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children rather then The Spirits Within. The "Halo Wars" trailer would be an excellent starting point for a Halo movie...why does it have to be with real people?? They should definitely make Halo an animated feature film.

An alternate headline should be: "Does it make sense for Hollywood to be making a Halo movie?"

The financials clearly say no, under Microsoft's expectations. Funny how Microsoft abhors the idea of funding a Halo movie on their own, but expect Hollywood studios to do so when the mainstream appeal of Halo is highly questionable.

How are they gonna make a movie out of a Halo game where the hero, is fully costumed, and never speaks a word?
And if there gonna have him take off his mask, this will just piss off the fans.

I have a hunch that some of these poster did not read the entire article. Clearly, Microsoft wants to protect the IP of Halo. They can fund what ever project they deem necessary.. In this case, I don’t see MS wanting to ’break’ into the movie production business.

#13: Does it make sense for Microsoft to be in the portable MP3 player business? No, it does not. And yet there is Zune.”

Zune is interconnected with windows vista, xbox, ect. Yeah, it does make sense. Read the article before posting your fan boy bull shit.

“Does it make sense for Microsoft to be in the peripheral computer hardware business? No it does not. And yet there is Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 et al.”

This one you would have almost got me. However, I looked down .. Low and behold a Microsoft laser mouse, infact I have never had a single problem with it, great product. Great timing on getting that market, not sure how they broke and dominated so quickly.. Kudos to them making money.

“Does it make sense for Microsoft to be in the home video game console business...?”

It couldn’t have anything to do with … say the future. Consoles / computers becoming closer and closer. Microsoft’s biggest money maker is windows / office. On a personal note, I’m glad MS did so.. I enjoy playing my 360 and as such I’m reading a 360 fansite.. You however #13 please get the fuck out.

scotty's got the right idea. a live-action halo film will only disappoint. if they do it entirely cgi, then everyone will be accustomed to the graphics from the game. and there will be no technological barriers.
