The only reason I would buy the PS3 at any time, is for Ebay. I know it is sleezy etc. But I really need the extra money for a Macbook for school. =(

The Wii is the only next gen console I would really buy considering I don't do much gaming anymore and the Wii just looks fun. Xbox 360 is really for hardcore games along with the PS3. The Wii, well. I'd rather have fun playing a game then get frustrated at trying to learn Sony's overly sensitive SIXAXIS.

unbiased, it really shouldn't matter which you buy as long as you're having fun

If I had the money I'd buy one to sell. But I'm perfectly happy with my Wii.

I'd be thinking "Hmm.. I'll buy this and get enough from ebay to get my wii for FREE!'

they're still selling for $1200 right?

He actually had his sister look on Ebay, and found that it wasn't worth his effort (they were forcing a bundle, and it was the 20GB version)

I have to offer my kudos to the author for having the integrity to NOT purchase the PS3 just to scalp it. He's a real member of the human race, and not a slime-sucking bottom-dweller, and I'm sure the parent looking for a great XMas gift that came in a couple minutes later was extremely grateful to find the item in stock.

A lesser person would have bought them and put them on eBay. I really respect the author. Not only does he not buy the hype, but he doesn't think only of himself this season.

Anyone who says they'd buy them to scalp them on eBay is an @sshole of the highest order, and deserves to be bludgeoned with a large print copy of "Atlas Shrugged."

I too went to a Shopko 2day and asked if they had any Wii in.. The lady said no, and then we were about to turn around and she asked, "Wait, your asking about the Nintendo Wii right".. I thought, she might have mistaken the Wii for PS3.. Turns out they were outa Wii, but she thought I asked for a PS3.. Cuz they had one in.. I had the money, instead I walked out the door with out it.. All to turn around and just get one off ebay..

Well now that the PS3 is out we can see that it's doesn't come close to what SONY promised. I know some guys that are still in denial 'cause they expected graphics & gameplay twice as good as the X360. It should be shouldn't it? Even though the games are 1st-gen, the hardware is supposed to be superior. It's funny to see how powerful advertising is. After looking at the system objectively without the SONY hype I'd rate it a B even though it's so expensive.

I ran into the same situation today. I went to 5 stores looking for a Wii and found a PS3 instead at Target. The same thoughts mentioned in the article crossed my mind and then I walked out empty handed.

He did the right thing, I don't think there's any game out for the PS3 right now that would justify shelling out 500$, let alone 600$ to play it. The only reason that would've made me consider it is the thought of selling it on eBay and paying for my future Wii with the profit, but he was only going to make like 100$ off of it (maybe), certainly not worth risking 1k for it.

The way I see it, unless you MUST have a Blu-ray movie player, there wont be any killer apps until at least 2008 to make a PS3 worth the $$$ (yes MGS, I'm talking about you) and that's counting on MGS being a PS3 exclusive, which right now doesn't look so certain to me. I think Wii60 is the way to go, at least for the next 6-12 months or so.

This PS3 ebay hype has gotten way out of hand. Here's the facts:

Cost 20 GB PS3: 540 (Approximate: tax depends on state)
Current average eBay auction price: $650
Potential profit: roughly $100

Cost 60 GB PS3: 650 (Approximate: tax depends on state)
Current average eBay auction price: $850
Potential profit: roughly $200

So let's split it down the middle: you can make $150 by finding a PS3 and selling it on eBay. Is $150 REALLY worth all the trouble of hunting down stores and calling every day and camping for hours? Really? Instead, how about you work a few hours of overtime and call it even.

Seriously: the ebay Playstation 3 bubble has burst. Give it up. Let the people who actually want to play them have them.

Just a thought.. Does that mean that the PS3 is actually NOT selling out? If this trend turns out to be true and goes on after Christmas, there's big problems ahead for Sony.

Guys, stop congratulating the author for not buying a PS3 to sell. He looked into that option and found out that it wouldn't be worth the time.

Christ, would you people read the damn thing before splooging over his morals?

I actually saw 3 PS3s coming out of the box this morning when I went to get my classic controller. I almost felt obligated to buy one, just because I still wasn't quite sure they actually existed. but really, it just wasn't worth it.

Sup,

When I waited in the freezing cold last Thursday for my Wii there where probably between 70-90 people who showed up in line (36 units available). The PS3 line only had 12 units and roughly 8 people waiting. There where even a few people that barely waited more then 20minutes outside to get theirs. I could have easily switched lines and got one but we all know the PS3 suxors!

Later guys

That's a cool account of a sensible gamer who certainly saw it all from years and years of companies hyping their consoles as a "Revolution." Heh, I recall playing "Cybermorph" for the Atari Jaguar when the console debuted at San Francisco's FAO Schwartz in '93 - the game was fun for about five minutes and it resembled a Genesis title with slightly fancier graphics. It didn't matter that the Jag had more bits than everyone and sold for $150, most of the games sucked.

Sometimes, I believe that the PS3 will end up becoming the 3DO of the 00's (killer ap that promised to change the world - all for just $750). Besides, most people don't own HDTVs, let alone afford a 1080p set.

Now, where the hell are the 200,000 Wiis that Nintendo claims to be shipping to stores every week? I don't expect to see a Wii on a store shelf until January.

I also ran into the same situation on Black Friday, where I went into the local Best Buy at about 11pm, and just happened to be in the right place at the right time where I could have snagged a 20GB PS3 (although I was only looking for a couple more Wiimotes, since I already had the system.) Ultimately, I decided that there was nothing I would do with it besides eBaying, and that would more than likely end up being more trouble than it's worth, so I decided to pass on it. I did eventually find the Wiimotes at the next place I went to, so it turned out in the end.

Hey guys! I'm an admin from Wii60, and I saw this story and couldn't resist popping my head in. If you'd like to meet up with fellow gamers who have put up with Sony's shit for long enough, check out http://www.wii60.com/forum. We're currently working on a complete site overhaul, so bear with us on the whole layout thing, but for now, it's still a great place to hang out. Hope to see some of you guys there. =)

It would be kinda hard to walk away from a PS3. There isn't a single game out for it now that I really want to play. If I saw one, I would want it just because it's a PS3.

I plan to stick to waiting until a really good game comes out for it. Hopefully there is a price drop by then.

I'm getting fed up with all the self-righteous prattle spouted by the people who claim themselves to be "true gamers" condemning those who buy the PS3 to place on Ebay.

The ONLY reason this sort of thing happens is due to these same "true gamers" with the attitude of

"OMFG!-this-device-so-pwns!-I-gotta-have-it-right-now-even-tho-I-know-first-revision-devices-always-are-so-buggy-but-I-HAVE-to-have-it-the-moment-it-launches-I'd-do-anything-to-have-it-if-I-don't-get-it-now-I'll-just-die!"

or some other such lusting. The scalping is going to happen no matter what. You can shut up and deal or shut up and fume, but either way, please just shut up!

As for calling the people who put the systems up there for auction "scum of the earth" and "lowest of the low," which one would you like to be, a pot? or a kettle?
