Colbert knocks out Pelosi in Wii Sports: Boxing

"Guess what nerds, I gots me one." That's the kind-hearted message Stephen Colbert sent out to all those desperate gamers out there still trying to get their hands on the Wii. The new Nintendo system reached No. 1 on the Colbert Report's "Threatdown" last night because, as Colbert puts it, it's "quite possibly the most addicting video game of all time."
What's the appeal for a conservative crusader like Colbert? Knocking out a virtual version of the liberal speaker-of-the-house-elect, of course. Check out a video clip of the epic battle after the jump.

Wow makes me want one now. AND IM SERIOUS ABOUT THAT! I didnt like the Excite Truck Demo but the boxing thing looks fun.
Savok @ Nov 28th 2006 11:25AM
Good thing he didn't make a Hilary Clinton, Wii would of been banned by now.
matt @ Nov 28th 2006 6:31PM
Colbert ftw!
Abhinav @ Nov 28th 2006 1:08PM
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHa Very well done, funny as hell. Nice, cleaning up the house the old way.
crono141 @ Nov 28th 2006 11:35AM
Excite truck really is not a great demo on wii capabilities. Its fun, but not great.
Wii boxing, is really not a great demonstration, because either I suck at it (quite possible) or the controlls on it seem so random. I can't ever get it to do what I need it to.
Tennis is awesome. And so is bowling.
White Rabbit @ Nov 28th 2006 1:44PM
That was Dangerous, Mr. Colbert! You weren't wearing the safety strap! You could have killed the entire audience!
lukee @ Nov 28th 2006 2:46PM
Shouldn't "conservative crusader" have been put in quotes?
Gaming related: It's no question that the Wii is getting some excellent press from the mainstream. I wonder if it will last?
I hope it does. As others have commented to previous blogs, gaming in general will benefit if Nintendo's "experiment" to expand the market in a new (or at least newer) way works.
DCSimian @ Nov 28th 2006 11:43AM
Admittedly, the controls aren't spot on like the other games, but it's still mad fun! It helps if you make slower motions...still trying to figure out the uppercut...I know you can do it...
Regardles...fun!
JibbyJam @ Nov 28th 2006 11:48AM
Haha nice. It was just some prerecorded footage taken from the game. You could tell because when he lifted his arms in the air at the end his dudes gloves didn't go up and the dude just kept punching. He had to do that though.. wouldn't do to cut into showtime unnecessarily!
3: Yea, you have to know how to hold the controller to get the controls to work properly. Do the training part and it should help you a bit. Once I got the controls down it was a blast.
Number One @ Nov 28th 2006 11:49AM
@3 You are doing it wrong. I took the time to review the controls and I finally reached pro with my Jack Bauer Mii. 12 bouts.
Once you understand the control scheme you shouldnt have any problems with wii-boxing. Theres no way someone would make a tech demo for a new control scheme with "seemingly random controls." WTF would be the point of that?!
Darkness @ Nov 28th 2006 12:11PM
Wii Boxing getsme into the game and I love the sound effects and the "thud" when the opponent hits the canvas. Very satisfying.
crono141 @ Nov 28th 2006 12:59PM
Yeah, I know. I told you, I just suck at it.
vidGuy @ Nov 28th 2006 11:57AM
Tennis and Bowling are the easiest and possibly the most fun because the controls are the easiest to get.
Golf and Boxing are great once you get the controls down. I thought Golf was horribly hard until I took the time to go through the training. Same with Boxing. Now I'm a Pro at each!
For as little depth as Wii Sports has, it has racked up nearly quadruple the time as LoZ:TP has on my console. Also, about 20 people have played it. About a dozen of those are looking to buy a Wii for themselves, now.
Cabcru @ Nov 28th 2006 12:03PM
I notice Nancy was fighting topless and she's remarkably flat-chested.

digitalFrequency @ Nov 28th 2006 12:33PM
so i suppose we'll be seeing many videos of political mii's fight off in wii boxing in the near future?
how about that uwe boll guy? any takers? lol
nimby @ Nov 28th 2006 5:32PM
This is why I love this show. Colbert rocks it and really doesn't care how he does it.
Hammer @ Nov 28th 2006 12:52PM
Colbert is amazing. I love his show.
Rich @ Nov 28th 2006 12:58PM
I was not a Wii believer until i played bowling... Than i was hooked to wii sports... which is sweet... but my Wii sleeper game is for sure Dragon Ball Z BT2... some may laugh... some may think i am kidding... but for anyone who got any enjoyment out of watching the show would love this game... by far the best Dragon ball game i have played on any system... (keep in mind that im really a sony guy)

and there you go folks, nintendos paid block on comedy central has paid off, kudos to them for being so smart in their advertising blitz. now seriously, stop playing video games and spend the money chillen.
Steve @ Nov 28th 2006 1:07PM
Did she lose or did she surrender? I can't imagine that the game was too taxing for her. Perhaps Pelosi can impose some legislation that will create a government program to mandate that good i.e. "fortunate" gamers are handicapped when playing disadvantaged players.
Gray Ham @ Nov 28th 2006 1:12PM
Why are people laughing at everything he says?
'We'll be right back.'
How original.

I'm glad someone else noticed, Baseball Prof. The same sort of people that let him give a nationally broadcast speech in front of the President ("deck chairs on the Hindenburg") are the ones who think he's conservative. As a conservative(ish) myself, I don't agree with many of his opinions, although he is hilarious when he's not insulting my intelligence.
crimemasterGogo @ Nov 28th 2006 1:36PM

Zoë K. @ Nov 28th 2006 2:11PM
You mean "faux conservative crusader," as the guy's shtick is the fact that he plays as far right a political hack as he can. I'm sure this is common knowledge, but still... found it interesting that you labeled him as such.
Colbert, himself, is actually pretty middle of the road, much like Jon Stewart. His act just makes him seem very, very left (or very, very right to the very, very uninformed).
And to Cabcru, Nancy IS wearing a shirt, and yes, she's as flat as Colbert. They gives the females in boxing white tank tops while the males go shirtless. I figure if they're not going to give us breasts, why the shirt to cover the lack of them?

Exgamecon I would like to let you know I already have a Xbox 360 and a PS3. I was interested in WII until I played the Excite Truck demo and then decided It wasnt worth the money. Some of us are older and can afford to buy all the systems if they like. I just thought the game looks kind of like the old school punch out games from the arcade. The ones where you put on the gloves and punched. I loved that game and would most likely like this one. Im not a child whom thinks just because Nintendo is trying to market to people does not mean that anyone whom expresses intrest has been sold by Nintendo, it just means they have resparked intrest in a product that I had written off. If anything sold me on the WII it would have been the DS. Its off kilter way of playing games has added a nice niche to the market that is enjoyable to me. I hope the WII does the same.
Kevin @ Nov 28th 2006 2:41PM
I love that you hear someone in the audience shout out "bears" before he announces the number one threat is Wii.

Have ya *bought* a "fully tricked out" Wii setup?

Wii boxing is good when you first start but then gets hard as hell as you progress, In the heat of a fight, somethings the Wiimote won't register you punched. But when it works, it works beautifully.
ExciteTruck is awesome. It is shallow, but once you learn how to do combos and maintain your boost throughout an entire stage, it's crazy addictive. the custom soundtracks are a nice touch too.
Bowling and Tennis are flatout awesome and could be full fledged games in their own right.
In the Mii Channel I've already made Bruce Lee, Priest Pai Mei, Chow Yun Fat, Mario, Luigi, Smokey (chris tucker from Friday) and members of my family.

Colbert isn't conservative or middle of the road, both he and Jon Stewart and liberals.
ZaxCG2 @ Nov 29th 2006 9:55PM
I love how great advertising the Wii is getting from Comedy Central. I'm sure Nintendo payed them off in some way to do it (at least for the Contest)... but look:
-South Park episode based around Cartman's wait for the Wii (Its like waiting for Christmas... times a thousand!)
-Promotional Thanksgivaway Wiikend: Giving out a Wii every hour. Wii-pimped Scion xB as grand prise!! (hope I win one!)
-Now this! I love Colbert! He's got such class!
Pikachelsea @ Nov 29th 2006 7:54PM
Colbert, a conservative... oh Joystiq, you slay me.
Zoë K. @ Nov 28th 2006 5:17PM
Dude, jon, go do some research, man. Jon Stewart is as middle-of-the-road as they come. Have you ever WATCHED The Daily Show? There's a damn good reason he mocks conservatives... they're in power right now. He does the same for liberals.
Personally, yeah, I think he leans a bit more toward the left mindset than the right, if I were forced to say so... but he sees the fallacy in both sides and the bipartisan bickering.
With Colbert, on the other hand, it's hard to tell. He seems so far left because of the satirical nature in which he plays his far right character. But in honest interviews (the few there are), in all honesty, he doesn't even seem as interested in politics in general as Stewart does. He's even more middle of the road than Jon.
Watch the video and try to tell me, honesty, that he's taking one side or the other:

Kai I agree with you. None of these next gen systems are Cheap.
Oh and I cant find a WII to buy anywhere except ebay and they are high there.
I guess I should have said I thought the motion control thing would suck. The PS3s motion controls are weak as of now, but playing E.T. made me respect the control options of the WII if not the game itself. With the Madden reviews and this video I may be in the market for number my 3rd next gen console.

Don't know why I'm mentioning this, but Colbert the man is obviously not conservative. Colbert the character is. Radically so.
Anyway, that's funny. The first time I played Wii Boxing, I was flailing and sidestepping with no rhythm or apparent effect on my character's movement. Then I realized I was the one on the right. :/
Silver @ Nov 28th 2006 6:07PM
"Colbert, himself, is actually pretty middle of the road, much like Jon Stewart. "
Jon Stewart, "middle of the road?" Now THAT'S hilarious!
I don't know the real Colbert's political leanings, but what makes his show so great is he savages both liberals and conservatives equally. Stewart is just your garden-variety left-wing "comedian." Nothing remarkable there.
exgamercon @ Nov 28th 2006 5:37PM
im sorry i misjudged ur reaction Jason W, im glad ur into it b, it does look like a fun time.
Joey Geraci @ Nov 28th 2006 7:34PM
Stewart is most definitely middle of the road. If you spent five seconds to actually read any of the interviews with him you would realize that pretty quickly. He mostly razzes the right now because they make it incredibly easy (by their status of being in power, and the evil stances they take), but he points out the lack of balls on the left side almost as often.
As the poster said, in reality, Colbert is even more middle of the road than Stewart.

Wow, Wii really /is/ for everyone. Awesomeness.
w0rf @ Nov 29th 2006 11:51AM
Agreed on both counts.
Yes, TDS is an equal-opportunity spoofer. Stewart had a field day after Mayor Nagin made his "chocolate city" remark and Hillary made her "plantation" remark, both in the same weekend.
And yes, the Wii is awesome and I covet it greatly.
Kipbug @ Nov 30th 2006 2:36AM
Jon Stewart a moderate?! Not at all. From what I've been able to glean from him, he is definitely a liberal. Not that there's anything wrong with that. His show is first and formost a comedy show, so I don't care what his leanings are. The bias that I see in the mainstream press is much more of a concern to me. It seemed to me that when Jon Stewart started out, he was Itmore balanced about it than he is now. He seems to keep doing the same jokes night after night. I'm just not as much of a fan of his as I used to be. I like Steven Colbert much better than I like Jon Stewart. They both do roughly the same things, but in a different manner. Steven uses more in the way of satire to make his jokes. I'm a conservative, I know that he is likely not a conservative, and maybe even a liberal. But I like the way he does his show. His "Word" segments are usually great with the little comments that are posted on the screen. Also the threatdown (with it's constant focus on bears), and his interviews are often Hilarious. How the people that he interviews don't know who he is by now is beyond me. But it's great to watch him interviewing some politician somewhere, or some expert on something, and stop them dead in their tracks. It seems that his show is much fresher and funnier. Just my opinion though
