Tenacious D pays homage to Guitar Hero with flash game

And you thought Guitar Hero "expert" mode was a beast... Well try finger licking with your keyboard's ASDF keys and space bar strumming in Tenacious D's new flash based GH knockoff. Hitting "sparks" will increase your "Rock-O-Meter" that, when full, doubles your points in "Righteous Mode." Kudos for trying, but where's my half scale plastic axe when I need it?
[Thanks, Rob]

The D better be in GH3

@1
I coudn't agree more.
Matt @ Nov 28th 2006 9:22PM
yeah I was hoping for some D in GH2... maybe a downloadable for 360? JB already did his Nacho Libre thing with XBL, so I don't think he'd personally opposed to it :)
Morisato @ Nov 28th 2006 9:26PM
Guitar Hero is a cheap knockoff of GuitarMania/GuitarFreaks. Old school Konami game thats already on it's 12th version.

Go there for the best GH clone for the PC. Check out the Keyboards on Fire fansite for a torrent to get GH1 tracks.

my computer does not register s and d at the same time.
Edison @ Nov 28th 2006 9:44PM
If Beelzeboss or Master Exploder (D's New Movie Soundtrack) are on GH3...Well..I'll cream myself.

@Morisato
I know, I can't stand knockoff games like this.
I mean, Halo sucks because it's a knockoff of Wolfenstein 3D...
Zelda sucks because it's a ripoff of Atari's "Adventure"
Final Fantasy sucks because it's a ripoff of those pen and paper games
and why play Lumines when I've got Tetris on my old Game Boy?
...Oh wait, because they're STILL GOOD GAMES.

@ #3:
I've never wanted to play either of those.
I do, however, play the Guitar Hero series.
Perhaps it's because I've heard of the songs instead of the Guitar Freaks tracks:
http://www.chudahs-corner.com/soundtracks/index.php?catalog=KOLA-023~024
Perhaps because I've actually heard of it outside of Japan, but I suppose that's everyone elses fault, rather than Konami's.
Boy, I must be dumb, and SHAME ON THE REST OF YOU! /smartass
Really, if they wanted my money, they simply had to solve these rather basic problems. It's not the first time this has ever happened, and certainly won't be the last. This STILL happens, and only now do some Japanese companies catch on.
On topic, this will get passed around, and it's too bad the timings aren't tight like a non-flash game, but it's a decent first effort.

Whoops, meant @Morisato...

I got a score of 57,000,000. I'm not showing up on the list, though (submitted my score).

Pretty cool, but I stunk it up with a 2,826,790 score.

Tenacious D are an amazing band, I need to check this out asap
GoldenS1104 @ Nov 28th 2006 11:21PM
Sweeeeeet. As soon as I saw their movie I thought, "There needs to be at least one Tenacious D song in Guitar Hero III," but then I thought, "O wait, almost all of their songs have the word c*ck repeated at least 6 or 7 times." I still want a real version that's actually in Guitar Hero rather than a crappy flash game.
Kyle @ Nov 28th 2006 11:31PM
Well no matter what it's still a pretty cool (free) minigame. I had enough fun with this I might actually fork up the cash for guitar hero.
Ivan @ Nov 28th 2006 11:50PM
Google the program Joy2Key. It converts joystick input into keyboard input so maybe with a USB Guitar Hero controller: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2006/08/17/diy-guitar-hero-usb-controller-made-from-toy-guitar/
You can play the game like the Guitar Hero series.
AJay17 @ Nov 29th 2006 12:39AM
I actually enjoyed playing that. And thasnks for the link number 5

I never really liked Tenacious D that much as it isn't my kind of music. It might have something to do too with the fact that I hate Jack Black. I just never understood his appeal he just runs around acting like an idiot kinda like that guy in the Napoleon Dynamite movie which sucked too.
Paul Gale @ Nov 29th 2006 2:41AM
Pretty fun little game Tenacious D has going here. Guitar Hero is a solid title and it's cool seeing games (particularly free ones) that borrow its style.

I've played this game for a minute.
Now I need a PS2 and Guitar Hero.
theafroguy @ Nov 29th 2006 6:51AM
Ack! That game is hard. On a Guitar Hero controller, it'd be fine, but a tiny keyboard? Plus the keys are horizontal and the notes are vertical, which makes co-ordination much harder.
StalkerB @ Nov 29th 2006 9:32AM
I can't seem to depress more than 2 keys at once.I can get DF but hiting spacebar does nothing and it's really slow to change from DF to DS.
32_Footsteps @ Nov 29th 2006 11:00AM
Morisato, I've played Guitar Freaks. I've done alright at Guitar Freaks. But Guitar Hero blows it out of the water in pretty much every way, from interfact to actual engine implimentation to song selection. Guitar Freaks to Guitar Hero is like Hydrox to Oreo - Hydrox came first, but Oreo is light years better.
As for cursing in Tenacious D's songs... eh, they can censor a few words for GH. Several songs already get pretty censored in the game. Heck, at least one song title gets censored in GH2 (Vagiant's "FTK" is actually "Fuck The Kells," as they find a local bar called The Kells particularly repellent).
Sure, it's not ideal, but the music is the most important part, right? Besides, they do leave in quite a bit of material (I was a little surprised that "Heart-Shaped Box" still had the word "hymen" in there).
Biohaz4rd @ Nov 29th 2006 9:22PM
Wow that was awesome. First time to play anything like guitar hero. I can't wait for GH2 for the 360!!!
