Gears: The never ending (commercial) story
34
The Gears of War commercial is a thing of artistic and contrasting beauty. It soothes the soul with some Donnie dark music and is so good, in fact, that it has spawned several YouTube remixes in the process. Joystiq reader PapaNoel may have put together one the most fitting remixes, however, at least in a "I like cheesy, epic kid movies from the 80s" sort of way as seen above. Even the lyrics and synth sounds sync nicely. It's a mad world, indeed.
[Thanks, PapaNoel]

Wow that was really horrible. Mad world is pretty much what makes the trailer commercial so great. Adding in some crappy music from the never ending story is just an insult to it.

...hmmm the only lyrics that synced in my opinion was the first line 'turn around....yada yada yada'. The rest of the lyrics didn't seem to have any relevance. i preferred the mad world cover.

That was pretty funny. And all of the other remixes were funny too! Somehow, the Safety Dance mixes well with the commercial also.

That's Donnie Darko, not Donnie dark by the way.

Thanks for posting this joystiq. I figured some people out there would get a kick out of this thats why i made it. As for the lack of sound at the beginning i did that so it would match up better with him turning aroudn and looking and the music also fades out nicely at the end.

Do yourself a favor. Skip the rest of the "remixes" and go for an absolutely amazing extended version:

The person who put it together seems to have put a lot of work into it and it shows.

The music that is soft or pop and contrasts with the action always works the best.
Kind of like OVER THE RAINBOW playing over the gunfight in Jon Woo's FACE OFF.
I think it's totally cool.

This one with the ghostbusters theme is really good. Notice the change in weapon at the very end. I watched a bunch, and this one is my favorite !!

I personally think that the mad world commerical is anything but good or artistic. It was laughable.

Uh I believe that was Donnie Darko, rather than Dark. And its a great song and all but I was never really thrilled at how it worked in the commercial. Also note that this rendition is a remake of the Tears for Fears song that was done for the Donnie Darko soundtrack, if my memory serves anyways. But I'm sure you all already knew that.

I like original aired on TV. The lyrics went...
"on people".... "familiar faces"......
That sounded better suited towards the drama that is GoW. This never ending story version amkes the game sound all flutey like another bright 'n cheery fantasy game
