Where I work I still have people coming out to look for Game Boys. Parents worry about lost stylus pens and broken screens with the DS, and the PSP, while popular with some kids, is too high priced for parents who see the more kid friendly Nintendo titles.

I had a lady in just today who wanted to buy a Micro. Another set of grandparents noted that their grandkids weren't getting DSes but were eager to play games for their Game Boys.

I think a smart thing for Nintendo to do would be to make a step up from the Game Boy aside from the GB or, perhaps, make a sequel system with single screen and dual screen versions. That could be a big boon for both them and parents who feel their kids aren't ready to handle some of the more complex systems.

The real question is WHY.

WHY would anyone want to recieve a GBA as a gift anymore.

I mean seriously GBA is more dead than GAMECUBE. ANd gamecube is worthless system only zelda is left on it, and we can play that on wii.

In USA: GBA is 38,399,000 and Japan 16,619,500

Source: http://www.vgcharts.org/

I mean seriously people just trade in GBA's for DS lites. The DS has more than proved itself as a great handheld.

I'm surprised it still sells so well. My guess is that the 5 years smash it and parents buy a second or third one.

"We're just waiting to see if a new Game Boy portable still exists in the company's DS future."

It's been said many times before, but here it is again: There's no way Nintendo will release a new portable system that that is not backwards-compatible with DS games. It would totally flop. The third-pillar claim was in case the DS failed. It did not.

The DS line is the future of Nintendo portables.

Hey Reggie, speaking of the GBA... what ever happened to Mother 3?

'Cuz, y'know... some people don't want to import text-heavy games they don't understand.

the GBA *SP* was one of the best designed and well built systems Ninty ever made. I love my silver one, even though I have a DS now. Never play either of them anymore though, not the same without achievements. ;)

I have noticed that the GBA is for some reason an incredibly popular format for pushing ports of old games (example: Final Fantasies I & II, IV, and V). So I think that the GBA will continue to succeed at least until those games begin to appear on the Wii's Virtual Console instead.

@1 About 50 million GBA/SP's had been sold as of the end of 2003. Obviously since then the rate of sales has declined with the introduction of the DS/Lite and PSP. I can't find any websites with the actual numbers but i would probably put the number close to 80mil worldwide. I think now if the perfect time to stop manufacturing GBA SP's. Nintendo can save money by not producing an old system that new hardware can play anyway. Are they still making DS Phat's? No, so now is the time to axe the GBA and let the DS play GBA games. The GBA had a fantastic run, i still remember getting my original GBA and finishing Golden Sun (classic!).

In fact, check this out:

"As of September 30, 2006, the Game Boy Advance series has sold 76.79 million units worldwide, of which 39.79 million are Game Boy Advance SP units, and 1.87 million are Game Boy Micro units"

That's from:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gameboy_Advance

I guess my 80million estimate wasnt far off. Also worth noting the Gameboy/Colour sold almost 120 million back in the day. It's funny how you can total the sales of every Sony machine and it is outdone by the combined sales of every Nintendo handheld (DS/Lite included). That of course doesn't include Nintendo's actual consoles. Wii FTW!

They better keep selling advances as trying to play original game boy games is a pain in the ass since the cartidges for GB and GBC don't work in a DS...

The GBA is still way too much popular to be killed, at least on America. If you check the NPD numbers you can se that they still sell very well above the 100k units a month, beating the PSP and GC on sales. And i belive that last year while the PSP was selling better than the DS. The GBA was killing every console with sales above the 500k a month for the hollidays.

And it is a very afordable and profitable console, so why would they kill such a cash cow?

It's pretty sad the GBA is dying... there's so much gaming 2D holds. So many sidescrollers, rpgs and shooters that won't be made.

Heh, I still have ALL of the Game Boys ever released, except for the Game Boy Light. I'd hope Nintendo wouldn't axe the Game Boy brand, but seeing how successful the DS is, I doubt it.
@Foetoid
You played Golden Sun as well? Awesome. It's a great game, though they never REALLY finished the story. They left loose ends here and there.

STILL WAITING FOR GOLDEN SUN 3 DAMMIT!

The solution is simple: make a newer better version of the DS, only call it the "Gameboy DS". It's a Gameboy with dual screens! Wow! What'll they think of next?

In order to justify the name change, they should add new functionality (built-in tilt sensor, rumble, and both screens can accept stylus input) and new software to utilize said functionality. Game boxes would be redesigned with the "Gameboy DS" logo, so as to avoid confusion. The GBDS cards would be the slighly wider than DS cards (so the DS cards can fit into GBDS device, but GBDS cards can't fit into the DS), and of course it would retain the GBA cartridge slot.

I just bought a GBA Micro (thanks to Wal-Mart's nice Black Friday deal) and I'm in love with it. Shame to see the system finally dying out though, as it's going to be the last great 2D system.

Also yes give us Mother 3 jerkholes.

considering the fact that there was nothing for the GBA at E3, and most of Nintendo's playable demoes this year were Wiis and DSs, this should be the last "quarter" for 1st party GBA support. I can't see them going at it for another year--especially with such little support this year.

It was announced a couple weeks ago Mother 3 wouldn't be localized (officially). That said, there are 2 or 3 projects on the internet now doing fan-translations (fanslations?) of which I've worked on one.

You guys could just learn Japanese, then you could have played and finished the game months ago. Like me. And it was amazing!

They need to have at least the GBA orig or GBA SP available to allow people to play GB and GBC games, play GBA multiplayer with link cable, and continue to use their existing accessories that won't work on the GBM nor DS.
